TThe March issue means two things: firstly,
winter is almost over and spring is right around the corner, so we’re well on our way
to warmer weather and maybe even a little bit of sun Secondly, it means that the Car
of the Year results are in! As always, it was
a hotly-contested battle for the top spot and you guys were certainly keen to show your support for your favourite cars There were
a few surprises in terms of how you voted, but it’s all good and I love to see exactly what you guys like and just how varied your tastes are This year I also added an Editor’s Choice award because I wanted to show my love for my own personal favourite feature car of the year You can see what I chose and check out the full results starting
on p50
I know it’s too early to start thinking about Car of the Year 2019 just yet, but I reckon we’ve already got some seriously strong contenders on our hands Take our cover car for example – this fully restored classic is one of the finest E28s anywhere
in the world We love the way it looks, we love the way it sits and we love everything about it It’s a real beauty and just the perfect modded classic We’ve also got a

couple of absolutely outrageous machines
in this issue; first up there’s the 1014whp twincharged E36 – which might just be one
of the most menacing machines we’ve ever featured – running a totally insane home brew combo of supercharger and turbo and
we love it The second is an outrageous, 1400hp RB26-powered 4WD Z4 drag car with a custom carbon and fibreglass wide-body, and it’s really quite unlike we’ve ever featured before Magnificent madness If that’s all a bit much for you then we’ve also got a super-clean E30 Cab running an M52 swap, a seriously tasty air-ride E46 M3 and that’s just scratching the surface of another
jam-packed issue of PBMW.
Looking ahead to next month, we’ll be bringing you our 2019 events guide, making sure you know about the biggest and best shows in the UK, Europe and beyond, and among our selection of modded machinery
we will be featuring an absolutely awesome M4 that will make you very happy indeed
So, let this issue help you power through a drab and dreary February and I’ll see you next month!

SCENE-ST EALER
T he E30 will never go out of
style, it’s a simple fact It’s now 2019, a brand new year, and here we are writing about
a car that came out 30 years ago That’s kind of incredible but tells you all you need to know about the amazing staying power and limitless appeal of the
Trang 7MARCH 2019 7
cars, and the younger generation loves it because it’s just so cool and there’s almost
no limit to what can be done with it And, for those on a little bit of a budget, BM’s older offerings are so good-looking that you need very few mods to just enhance them by the perfect amount and to make
them instantly individual and yours
It is therefore very easy to understand why Vas Ahmed was drawn to his E30, but this is a build that has a lot more going for it than mere good looks and there is
in fact a lot more to this car than initially meets the eye “I’ve always been into cars,”
he tells us as we start to chat “Since I was 11 or 12 my dad used to buy salvage cars and fix them up and my family has always been a BMW one,” and growing up around cars clearly rubbed off on him in very much the right way as evidenced by the machines he’s owned over the years
E30 When it was launched it set the bar so high for the mid-size exec sector that rivals have been playing catch-up ever since and
it became arguably the symbol for success
in the ’80s Best of all, now it’s arguably
a car that appeals to everyone on the scene – the older generation of modders love it because it reminds them of when

“My first car was an Escort and as far as
BMs go I’ve owned an E36 M3 Evo Cab,
an E46 M3 Cab and six E30 Cabs, the first
of which was a Zender-kitted Birds car…”
so it’s fair to say that Vas is a bit of an E30
addict and knowing that it’s not all too
surprising that he’s ended up with another
one “I bought my first E30 when I first
bought my garage – my brother-in-law had
E30s, I saw them, liked them and wanted
one for myself,” he says and while that was
some time ago now, Vas’ passion for E30s
has not waned one bit over the years and,
if anything, getting involved in the scene
with this project may have ramped it up
even further
“I bought this one in August 2016,”
explains Vas; “I fancied one at the time
and spent a long time looking for the right
one,” and his efforts paid off when he
picked up this tidy 320i “I spent about six
months looking for the right car before
I came across this one It was about 90% rust-free and I wasn’t interested in
a facelift, it was all about the chromies for me,” he grins Initially he had pretty much no plans for it, adding an M Tech
2 kit and a set of BBS reps but then he discovered the show scene and things quickly spiralled out of control “I saw Faz’s Calypso E30 Cab and I loved it, it was one of the main inspirations for my whole build”, smiles Vas, “but I didn’t know what air-ride was, I was a real show scene virgin.” You’d never know that based
on what he’s built, though, and rather than just running in head first, he took his time
to do his research and build his perfect E30 “The first thing I did was re-fitted the Tech 1 kit – I couldn’t get rid of the chrome, there are not many chromies out there so I had to preserve it,” he smiles
“The next step was to strip the car back to almost bare metal and give it a respray in
its original colour, Royal blue,” and with the car looking perfect he could now crack
on with the rest of the mods
The next step for Vas was wheels, so he ditched the BBS reps and started hunting for something more becoming, but sticking
to the stock four-stud configuration would have seriously limited his potential wheel selection He therefore carried out a five-stud conversion, with E36 M3 Evo components up front and an E36 318ti setup at the rear, and then he could start shopping for his perfect wheels “I added a set of refurbed BBS RCs [aka Style 5s] and then got the 17” OZ Futuras I’m running now I saw them on @friedporkchopE30’s car and really liked them so I got my hands
on a set; I built them up myself, painted the centres, polished the lips and then sealed them,” and the Futuras are a great choice of wheel for the E30 It’s a car that can pull off just about any style of wheels
Tidy boot install for the air and audio componentsCarbon intake and
M50 manifold
Trang 10and while the default choice for most
people is a classic cross-spoke, bucking
that trend with a simple five-spoke design
is good to see We love the soft contours
of the spokes on the Futuras, the subtle
flaring at the end of each one, those classic
centre caps and, as 17s – quite possibly the
perfect size choice for the E30 – with those
elegant silver centres and deep polished
lips, they just look awesome, especially
when combined with the air-ride
Having taken inspiration from Faz’s car
and keen to embrace the scene, air was
always going to be on Vas’ shopping list
and he has no regrets “I went for an Air
Lift Performance 3H setup with a single
tank and single Viair compressor and I am
100% happy with air It drove really badly
before when I just had it on springs but
it feels so much better now, plus I can go
anywhere without having to worry about
speed humps or anything like that,” he
says In addition to that Vas has also had
his suspension fully poly bushed in order
to get the chassis feeling nice and tight
He’s also taken full advantage of the stud setup his E30 is now running and has fitted a set of E36 M3 Evo brakes up front for a significant increase in stopping power, and he needs it as this E30 isn’t just about aesthetics, there’s something tasty tucked beneath that bonnet too
five-While the 320i is absolutely fine, powered as it is by one of BM’s characterful M20 straight-sixes, Vas found
it lacking in shove so something had to be done and that something was an engine swap “I tried to get hold of an S50 first but they are hard to come by, and then
I saw other people running the M52B28 swap – it looked clean and I liked the idea
of this swap so I went for it The engine was cheap but all the other parts were expensive,” winces Vas, but no pain, no gain and while his wallet may have taken
a little bit of a bashing, the end result was well worth it The M52 has been equipped with a custom loom and exhaust manifolds from Dan at BM Conversions UK (DanThe
on the E30 Zone forum), along with a
full E30 M3 Scorpion exhaust, an M42 gearbox running a Z4 2.5 short-shift and,
at the back, a 3.91 LSD It’s a mighty fine combination of engine and accompanying mods and, most impressive of all, is the fact that Vas fitted the engine, gearbox and everything himself – in fact he’s done every single mod you can see on the car, so this
is most definitely one project that has been built, not bought
All this adds up to a comprehensive build but there’s plenty more to enjoy here One of the most controversial aspects
of the car is without doubt the square headlight setup, as the original round headlights have such universal appeal, but we have to say that we admire Vas’ willingness to walk his own path with this build “I saw these for sale on eBay and I wanted to be different so I bought them,” he says and we’re glad he did as they give this E30 a different look that makes it stand out even more What
makes this car really stand out, though,
is that stunning interior and it’s actually the reason why Vas bought this particular car, as it had just been done and it looks fantastic You’ve got acres of cream leather with gorgeous dark blue piping and it
is the perfect colour combo to go with the rich, deep, dark blue bodywork, and then there are additional touches like the cream gear gaiter and the entire dash has also been covered in leather, making this interior particularly lush Vas has added
a custom wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel complete with Alcantara centre section along with some audio upgrades, with Pioneer components and head unit, a Phoenix Gold amp and a Rockford Fosgate sub, all housed in a tidy boot build. For a first show build, this is an exceptional E30 that has been enhanced with a particularly fine selection of mods across the board Vas has put in a lot of effort and approached everything with a keen eye for attention to detail in his quest
to build his perfect E30, and the results speak for themselves But Vas isn’t done with it just yet… “I have lots of plans for it,” he says with a grin “I’ve changed to
a set of Schnitzer wheels since the shoot and have redone the boot build with twin 12” subs, and I’m thinking of maybe fitting
a different engine I’ve started working on
it for this season” he says so we’re going
to have to wait and see where Vas takes his E30 next but one thing is for sure, it’s never going to be for sale “I built this for
my son,” he smiles, “he loves it and he will get it after me so it’s going to stay in the family,” and so another BMW family is created, with this lovely E30 at its centre ●

ne of our favourite wagon’s to
join us here at MStyle Joe
came to us all the way from the
south coast after seeing that we
also do exhaust conversions
So Joe, why the F31?
Practicality Well I’ve always
gone for BMW, my Dad got me
into them as he owned a Phoenix
Yellow E46 M3 convertible I’ve
had an F36 and prior to that an
E60, but I went over to the F31 as
the saloon wouldn’t fit our dog in
the back
What’s it like to drive as a daily?
It’s had a stage one remap so it’s running 310hp and 640 ft/lbs of torque Power delivery is really smooth – the ease of getting up
to cruising speeds is effortless and the comfort is what makes this car, so it’s a great all-rounder and ticks all the boxes for me
So you’ve had quite a few things from us – the carbon splitter, diffuser, eyebrows, wing mirrors as well as the 340i style conversion
It’s looking great so far Do you have any further plans for the car
or is this it?
I don’t think I will ever be finished (Haha) Spoken like every car enthusiast out there!
Well I’m looking at your carbon roof spoiler and the wings Also thinking about powder coating the wheels to satin black and potentially wrapping San Marino Blue or a pearl orange, but so far I’m very happy with the results Thanks for coming all the way up
to us Joe and happy motoring!

character, classic BMWs
have it in spades – while
the newer models
are without doubt
better cars in absolute terms, they lack
the boundless charm and appeal of the
classics Take the E28, for example – the
second-gen 5 Series is so utterly charming
that you can’t help but fall for it, and it
offers all the classic BMW styling elements
that we’re such suckers for If you want a
retro BM that isn’t a 3 Series, the E28 is an
irresistible choice; just ask Rob Goodwin
(@st4rk3y) – his burgundy beauty has
been going down a storm on the UK scene and with good reason, as this stunning machine has got to be one of the finest E28 examples anywhere
“As soon as I got away from Fords (at about 22) I went straight to BMW, but dad always had BMWs and American muscle
so it all started about 30 years ago (the original age of the sharknose),” says Rob
as we peruse his motoring history “I’m not telling you my first car but my first BM was
an E21 back in the day – showing my age!”
he chuckles “It was a 1980 323i in white and I lowered it on Alpina wheels, fitted Kamei front and rear spoilers, furry dice
and rosary beads Since then I’ve had an E30 325i Sport, then my dad’s E28, which I lowered on BBS rims and fitted with front and rear spoilers (oh and all of them had Pioneer stereos, graphic equalisers and three-way parcel shelf speakers) Then I went to the dark side and got myself a VW Mk3 VR6, did an engine rebuild from 2.8
to 2.9 with a gas-flowed head, the usual add-on air filters, stainless steel exhaust blah blah blah Then the world went real dark,” he says, his jovial mood changing
“Had a motorbike crash in 2010, busted everything, nearly died, nearly never walked again Life-changing experience,” but he didn’t let it stop him from enjoying his modified cars “I then had an Audi B6 A4 – Rotiform had just started, Air Lift had just started and a very good friend of mine, at what was G-Werks, said let’s do this, so we built a show winner and a magazine
Trang 22feature car, one of the first B6s in the UK
on air-ride Then I had a slammed Beetle,
then modified a B7 RS4 and then went nah,
back to BMW for me,” he grins, “so I got
myself this E28 525e
“When I was younger, dad had two or
three E28s and it was the last car I had
real fun with him in before he sadly got
ill and passed away in 2004 I mentioned
earlier he also had American muscle
cars – I did not have the time or money
so I thought get the E28 and paint it the
Mustang colour, so I did,” he smiles.” I
purchased the car from a mate of a mate

looking for something that would be good
enough for me to invest in I bought the
car late 2015 and until Jan 2017 tried my
hardest to kill it – drove it like a nutter,
pushed it hard, slid it about, bumped into a
few things It never died,” he laughs “The car had proved to me that it was worth investment (I did have a gearbox rebuild as she was a little noisy by the time I finished throwing her about),” and that meant that Rob could crack on with his plans, which were plentiful and very thorough
“I wanted to do the full restoration with
a modern twist Again, at the time there were only a few E28s in the UK and Europe and that had really given me the itch, but nothing in the colour I wanted to own so I decided to build one,” he says, and here we are
It has been quite a journey but every journey must start somewhere and, for Rob and his E28, it began with gathering all his resources together “I bought every trim, rubber, nut and bolt I could get my hands on as soon as I bought the

E28; doing up a classic is not like doing
a modern car, parts don’t just come the-shelf,” he says and he’s not wrong, a classic restoration takes time and requires commitment “I suppose the first serious thing I bought was the wheels A man known for his skills and BMW builds in the US was selling the BBS RSs to clear out and make space for his next project; I spotted them on IG and we started talking and, boom, before I knew it they were being delivered They were second-hand and needed a refurb, so without hesitation were collected by my mate Indy Virk and driven off to Stefan at Puc Polish in Belgium for a full ceramic polish.” The end result is nothing short of spectacular and the RSs look simply sensational on the E28 – the fully-polished finish is just stunning and, as per Rob’s preference, they’ve got

the whole stepped lip thing on the Audis
and needed a change,” he says and this
was definitely the right direction to go in
With the wheels ready, Rob gathered up
the rest of what he needed to get his E28
project off the ground “I went to the only
place to shop for Air Lift and sounds that
looks after you and saw my mate Parm at
Car Audio Security and bought everything
there, then went off to the Install Company
to see the magician that is Phil, Jon and Mike at JC WeldFab and Bruce at WRP Paint and Restoration (all round good old Northampton way),” he grins In terms of suspension, there was never any question about which direction Rob was going
to take the E28; “Full air-ride with 3P management is what I wanted It had to have air as I wanted the E28 on the floor,”
he grins “I had to do some homework, and Phil came up with the final plan to get the drop right and ensure the rake was good, and it’s running Mk6 Golf bags on the front and universal ones on the rears
Did that come out bang-on!” he grins and he’s not wrong E28s on air always look fantastic and Rob’s example is no different, and going the extra mile to get it sitting perfectly when aired-out has paid off massively as it delivers some serious visual drama, with the front portion of the car’s underside actually touching the ground and those RSs tucking perfectly
Most of the work on this project has been put into the restoration side of things and the result is that this is easily one of the cleanest examples of an E28 you’re likely to find anywhere The car was completely stripped, with the entire interior and engine being removed, and the body taken back to bare metal from the coach line down; all the rust was removed, the underside was stripped and welded, and the floors, seals, front wings, rear arches, driver’s door and front valance were all replaced That’s no small undertaking but Rob is a guy who believes

in doing things right first time and, as
he says, “I had a plan and never looked back.” The car was then resprayed in BMW Calypso red and then all new chrome, roundels and badges were fitted, the Euro bumpers were re-chromed and re-fitted along with new glass all-round and every bit of rubber or seal you can see on the car is new This gives you an idea of just how exhaustive the restoration has been, but it was all worth it and letting the E28’s natural beauty shine through was without doubt the right decision
to make
Rob applied the same approach when it came to the engine and while the 2.7 eta engine hasn’t been touched as far as power
is concerned, it’s had plenty of attention in terms of getting it running at peak performance “The engine was fully restored with a JC WeldFab radiator, expansion tank and water tank made up for me in stainless
Trang 26steel Every belt, gasket, nut and bolt I
could replace was replaced to high spec
I also fitted a straight-through bespoke
stainless steel exhaust with twin 2” tips,
built by the TIG-master himself, JC, and it’s
fully polished, of course,” he says
The interior, however, has undergone
quite a transformation and, when it came
to choosing the colour, Rob had a rather
unique approach to proceedings… “I drove
about with a blue door card (the original
colour as the car was silver), a white door
card, a light grey door card and a tan door
card,” he grins “I got in the car every day
and marked on a piece of paper which
one I liked best for a month, and the tan
won I then went to see my mate Jo at
Trim Deluxe to tell him to order the tan
and in the shop he had some vinyl that
just bowled me over It just reminded me
of the Singer Porsche so off to Google we
went, got a few ideas and the interior was
born… It’s the best interior I could have
hoped for and I kept it retro with leather
and vinyl and the smell was perfect 1987,
as if it had come out of the showroom,”
he beams The interior is truly stunning, a
sea of rich tan that works so well with the
Calypso exterior and the attention to detail
is exceptional, with chocolate carpets and
mats with tan piping, leather all along the
lower dash and that classic Nardi steering
wheel And if you think the interior is
impressive, the boot build takes things to
another level, with acres of tan trim, twin
polished tanks and copper hardlines that
look like they’ve come from a still and
then there’s that magnificent centrepiece,
an incredibly detailed custom wooden
’80s valve amp tribute, complete with
Goodwins branding for that retro personal
touch Perfection
This really is a magnificent build but
while the obvious elements are hugely
impressive, it’s the little touches that are
Rob’s favourite aspects “I had the rear E28
badge made at 3DPRINTUK as a one-off;
so many people asked me if BMW ever made that badge, which of course they didn’t,” he grins “Then there’s the chrome trim on the front grille, which was only done on the E12 But best of all was the BMW C-pillar roundel, which again was inspired by the E9 For me, looking in the wing mirror you could see it and it made the car feel special,” he says with a smile
“Overall the car was in some sort of build stage for about three years, on and off, and the big work was underway in the last
12 months; it was always being tinkered with in some way or another before that,”
says Rob “It was one of those cars that, when I had finished the car and the look, I just could not bring myself to take it away from its original E28 look The car had gone as far as I wanted to take it For me
it was perfect in every way,” he smiles and that means that there are no future plans for it, but that’s also because Rob had
to sell it not long ago “Although I never intended to sell the car, things happen, priorities change I built it, I loved it, but
needs must,” says Rob pragmatically “My late dad, who was my inspiration for cars, said to me when I was 20: ‘Men live to
an average age of 75.’ That gives you 55 summers if you start at 20, that’s 55 cars
if you have one a year, on average people have a car for three years, that’s about 18 cars in your lifetime, and that’s if you make
it that long Wise words that have stayed with me all my life, so I get the itch And that’s why I sold her on to a nice guy who
I know is going to look after her as he loves his retro BMWs and has a few If you want to follow him he is @e30_jv on IG and I certainly will be to watch out for any changes he makes,” says Rob
Luckily he’s not abandoned BMs and has moved into an M2, which he’s loving
“I always knew that was the next car for me and am I not disappointed, what
a machine, love it, no regrets,” he grins and that’s so good to hear As for the E28, it might be gone but it will never be forgotten and, thanks to its new owner, it will continue to be a part of the scene for many years to come, just like Rob ●

Want more grunt from your S65 but don’t want to tread the same path
as everyone else? Australia’s Harrop
Engineering has the answer
THUNDER
FROM DOWN
UNDER
It’s kind of a cliché that
Aussies love big, meaty V8s, but it’s a cliché because it’s also true In a country of wide, open spaces, mostly straight roads and relatively cheap petrol, it’s hard not to fall in love with a V8 And what Aussies love more than a V8
is a supercharged V8 Call it the Mad Max
factor if you like but, whatever the reason, the fact remains that sticking a big blower
on top of an even bigger V8 is many Australians’ idea of heaven And thus, it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise to find that it’s an Aussie company that developed the world’s first positive displacement
supercharger for the S65 Because after all, what’s better than a finely-honed, high-revving European V8? One with a bloody great supercharger on top
Of course, it’s not that large, as it needs
to fit under the stock aluminium bonnet, and Harrop, being one of the world’s leading automotive engineering firms, knows how to generate big power without resorting to hilarious, poke-through-the-bonnet blowers anyway, but you get the idea The S65 lacks grunt down low, and Harrop knew just how to fix that little issue It wasn’t easy, thanks to the unique challenges of placing a positive displacement supercharger on top of eight

individual throttle bodies (as we’ll explain
in more detail later), but Harrop isn’t
an OEM supplier for nothing, and after
countless hours of testing and tuning in all
conditions, they managed to generate what
is quite possibly the most exciting way to
upgrade an S65 out there – the TVS 1740
The project started back in 2011,
when Harrop first took delivery of this
Alpine white example After scanning
the engine bay, they came up with initial
verification prototypes and started work
on the big brake kit, too However, as
Harrop general manager, Heath Moore,
points out, the brakes were the easy
bit “The brake kit wasn’t an extensive
engineering undertaking – it’s something
we’ve got a lot of experience in – but the
supercharger was, the S65 was extremely
complicated [to work with] Like you
probably couldn’t pick a more complicated
engine package to supercharge with
positive displacement as an aftermarket
kit, because of the individual throttle
bodies, which are actually downstream of the supercharger And then we needed to develop a sophisticated idle bypass control strategy in the ECU So we spent as much time developing the hardware and tooling that up as we did on the calibration, which
is still a work in progress in many ways,”
he says
Now, you may be wondering why the calibration of a product that’s been on the market a while now is still a work in progress, and that’s simple – the ‘stage one’ tune it comes with out of the box is perfect for its current 525whp, but Heath and his crew are hoping to develop a much more powerful tune, and that’s taking time
Getting back to the complexities of putting
a positive displacement supercharger on top of eight ITBs, it all comes down to venting air when the throttles snap shut
With traditional throttle bodies in front or above the supercharger, the moment you shut the throttle/s, there is no air getting into the supercharger, and any excess
pressure created by the screws pushing the air left inside is vented via a vacuum-actuated bypass valve (because, with the throttle/s shut, there is vacuum pressure inside the intake manifold) However, with the supercharger placed on top of the throttles, the moment they snap shut, you have no vacuum from the combustion chambers and have to figure out a very precise and rapid way to vent that excess pressure from the supercharger before it damages the delicate butterflies Therefore, Harrop came up with an electronic bypass valve, and calibrating that (and further tuning it to ensure a more precise transition in and out of boost) is what took much of the product’s development time With the supercharger recipe figured out (at least for the stage one tune), Harrop set to work ensuring the product was as thoroughly tested as possible, and that’s where this E92’s inadvertent evolution from road car to time attack beast began
We say inadvertent, as this level of tuning
Harrop
supercharger kit
makes 525whp
Trang 36was never planned – the car had been
upgraded with a GTS half-cage and rear
wing, as well as those aforementioned
big brakes and even some 20” Forgeline
wheels, but as you can tell from the wheel
size, this was never a track car However,
track testing was needed and sadly, during
one session, a staffer put it into a concrete
wall hard enough to set off all the airbags,
and Heath made the call to put a full
Custom Cages T45 cage in there after it
had all been fixed up After that, thanks to
the Australian state of Victoria’s road rules,
it was never going to be a road car again,
and the path to the current spec began
As for that spec, supercharger,
Akrapovic GT4 exhaust and Race Coatings
coated factory exhaust manifolds aside,
the engine is completely stock, as is the
drivetrain apart from a Drexler diff and
BimmerWorld short shifter The majority of
the changes are in the suspension, interior
and aero Every single arm has been
replaced with BimmerWorld adjustable
models, complete with spherical bearings,
while shocks have been upgraded to MCS
remote reservoir three-ways, paired with
Eibach springs Heath says the suspension setup required quite a bit of tweaking
on arrival, due to the components being calibrated for smooth US and European circuits, rather than Australia’s often bumpy tracks, but it’s now at a level where just fine-tuning is required to eke the most out of the car Brakes are Harrop Ultimates, with six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers, Ferodo DS3000 front and DS2500 rear pads, and slotted, fully-floating two-piece discs, fed air by custom ducts Over those go some Forgeline GS1Rs in a much more track-spec 10x18”
ET27 front and 11x18” ET31 rear fitment, all wrapped in sticky BF Goodrich Rival
S tyres Meanwhile, the exterior changes consist of a Motorsport24 vented carbon bonnet, BimmerWorld carbon boot lid, massive BimmerWorld Ultralight GT rear wing and matching front carbon lip/
splitter (complete with BMW Motorsport GT4 carbon canards), LCI rear lights and customised headlights with black housings and new projectors and angel eyes Inside, there’s that cage, customised dash and door cards, M Performance wheel and Velo

All-in-all, a very well thought-out and relatable
package for those who wish to turn their
E9x into a track car
It’s also a well-proven one Heath and
the team regularly take it out to compete
in various Australian time attack events,
and while the car’s near-1500kg weight
means it will never be up the top of the
field, it’s a solid, consistent and, most
importantly for future customers, reliable
runner Its clean and subtle appearance,
well-thought out colour scheme, and
throaty roar from that Akrapovic exhaust
all help draw crowds, as does the fact it’s
one of the few European cars competing
in time attack in Australia The near-stock
dashboard, complete with air-conditioning
(Heath says he likes to stay cool while
waiting to go out on track), certainly starts
a few conversations in the pits, too
For those wondering how it drives, let’s just say it’s pretty intense Not being road-legal, we could only thrash it up and down the private road in front of Harrop
HQ, so observations here are limited purely to straight line acceleration, but even then, the experience was an eye-opener Compared to any centrifugally-supercharged E9x M3, there was a huge increase in full-throttle grunt from just 2000rpm, and by 3000rpm you were already being rocketed along, thanks to the 200whp and 340lb ft available by that point (that’s 60hp and 80lb ft more than an ESS
625 kit at the same rpm, for example, and almost identical to the ESS 625 system’s peak torque) Keep into it and it only gets wilder from there, with a further kick after 4000rpm as you start to climb rapidly
towards the 372lb ft max torque figure, and while the dyno graph tells you the twist drops off after that, it’s only a small dip, and by then you’re surfing such a huge wave of power that you just don’t care Put simply, even taking into account this car’s race spec (and in reality, the cage and full dash means it’s very little lighter than stock), the grunt on offer here, and the way it’s delivered, would mean any Harrop supercharged E9x M3 would murder the majority of centrifugally-supercharged M3s out there in real world conditions The fact the TVS 1740 is engineered to
OE standards is just the icing on a very delicious cake Would Max Max approve? Maybe not, given his penchant for Aussie Fords, but there’s no doubt an ‘apocalypse-spec’ M3 fitted with this ’charger would fit right into his world ●
