People come and go with alarming regularity, and despite me calling the city

home for only eight years, I’m considered by many as something of a

long-termer (Although my eight years are peanuts compared to Motivate’s head

honcho, Ian Fairservice, who’s amassed more than 40.)

Most people, it seems, are still getting to grips with Dubai in one way or

another, the city, its little quirks, the way things do – or don’t – happen here

While generations of your family probably grew up in your hometown, and

therefore know all there is to know about the best place to get this, or where

to do that, there’s no real escaping the fact that, for the vast majority of us in

Dubai, we’re visitors; short- to medium-term guests, still finding our way

(Again, I do need to exclude Ian in all this The man knows everyone in this

country Like, everyone It’s quite alarming.)

Luckily, there is one constant in all this – What’s On Not wanting to blow our

own trumpet here (but, well, toot toot), but this very magazine has been doing

what we do for four decades now (you might have noticed our neat little logo

trick on the cover to celebrate this very fact), and in that time we’ve managed

to pick up more than a few hints and tricks along the way With that in mind,

we launched Try Dubai at Barasti Beach (p28) – a freshers’ fair of sorts – to

the city that we love From cool clubs and studios to join to neat little apps that

help make living in the UAE that much better, there should be something for

everyone Even Ian

Enjoy the issue – and see you at Try Dubai on March 22!

by the legendary NTS Radio It’ll feel upbeat, dynamic, edgy even!

I’m looking to buy a piece of art for

my living room, is Art Dubai the best place to do that?

Yes! We have galleries coming from all over the world bringing with them works to suit all kinds of budgets and tastes Don’t be afraid to ask questions

as you walk through the gallery halls; seek out those early-career artists

in particular, and you’ll find exciting artwork from Dhs1,800 upwards

If I want a guided tour, is that possible?

Yes, and that’s something we love to do! We call them ‘discovery tours’, and we always have experts to hand

to give insights into specific booths and answer questions, too

What’s your top tip for a first timer

to Art Dubai?

Don’t try to over think it People are often intimidated by contemporary art and question their own judgement as

to how they should be feeling or what they should be thinking Ultimately, visual art is just another way of understanding the world either from a macro or micro level For a first-timer, I would just ask them to come and enjoy themselves Think about the rest later

With so much in store for

the Lit Fest, what is your top

tip for a first-time visitor?

Don’t hold back! Try a little

bit of everything Panel

discussions can be great fun,

and it is always interesting

to see writers from different

genres share a stage as they

attack a topic from wildly

different angles

Tell us why reading is so

important to you?

Without stories, we wouldn’t

be able to make sense of the

world Through stories we

learn about ourselves and each

other We learn how to ask for

a raise at work, or how to climb

a mountain Stories show

us what we can achieve and

inspires us to try, even when

the outcome looks uncertain

Ahlam Bolooki

Director of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature

Do you think it is difficult

to get young people excited about books in the digital age?

I think there are a lot of distractions that can get in the way, but the right book at the right time can be life changing

And once you have had that intense connection with a book

or a story, you will look for it again and again

What was your favourite book of 2018?

Sapiens, A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah

Harari A favourite of mine and millions of others It was published in 2011, but I read

it in 2018, as that was the year it was translated into 50 languages and sold 10 million copies worldwide
