EDITOR’S LETTER

… can you come out to play? And if so, where? How about at the skate park on Kite Beach? Or footgolf at the Address Montgomerie? Maybe up in the trees at Mushrif Park, a smash room

in Al Quoz, or in an A380 airplane at Dubai Mall? All options are available to you, as we look

at how Dubai really is a playground for big kids (see page 20 to find out more)

The thing is, as adults, life tends to get serious, where the only climbing we’re interested

in are up corporate or property ladders And it seems we’re not the only ones who think this, hence all the innovative ways people have found to abandon adulthood and have fun Sometimes, however, the perfect way to have fu n is eating your bodyweight in pepperoni pizza, trying new snacks in a chic coffee shop, or being given free rein inside a dedicated antipasti room You can try all of this and more at the city’s newest restaurants (from p51).The point being, you can make your own rules on how to have fun this year, whether that’s dancing all night at the Dubai Jazz Festival (p35), taking part in a fun run (p46), or exploring the art galleries of the UAE (p68)

As for us, well, the What’s On team are off to celebrate the closing of this issue by transforming the office canteen into a giant ball pit Feel free to join us!

Enjoy the issue,

I HOPE YOU DON’T

Jazz? No But as one of Northern

Ireland’s most successful rock

exports, with more than 16 million

record sales to date, it seems

certain that Snow Patrol will attract a huge

crowd on the festival’s opening night

While their success is now

unquestionable, the group’s early years

were not a straight run to success After a

brief stint under the moniker Polarbear,

under which they released their first,

largely unknown, EP, the group underwent

a line-up change and rebranded as Snow

Patrol, before releasing two largely

unknown albums with a small indie

label While commercially unsuccessful,

their efforts were enough to earn them

a contract from Polydor, and it was their

third album, Final Straw, which saw the

band rise to fame in the UK, achieving

five times platinum status with sales in

excess of three million Since then, the

group has released a further four studio

albums, spawning huge international hits,

including Chasing Cars, Take Back The

City and Just Say Yes

Did you know?

Jay Kay named the group in honour of the Native American Iroquois tribe, having said

he was inspired by their

“spiritual reverence for the earth” As a result, the band’s early work featured a host

of idealist, ideological and politically-charged lyrics, touching on everything from environmentalism

to corporate greed Jay Kay later came under fire, however, when he developed

a love for supercars and his environmental credentials were called into question…

THEY’VE EARNED PRAISE

AS ONE OF THE LONDON

ACID JAZZ SCENE’S MOST

COLOURFUL LIVE ACTS

Having risen to international fame in the early 1990s, earning praise as one of the

London acid jazz scene’s most colourful live acts, there’s little question Jamiroquai

have earned their place in the Jazz Fest headline spot While lead singer Jay Kay is

instantly recognisable, thanks to his outlandish headwear and entertaining on-stage

antics (indeed, many fans believe he is Jamiroquai, which must be somewhat galling for the rest

of the line-up), there’s a lot more to the group’s act than novelty Their 1996 album Travelling

Without Moving retains a Guinness World Record as the best-selling funk album in history,

and the group have stacked up an Ivor Novello Award, a Grammy and two MTV Video Music

Awards as well as 26 million album sales globally in their career to date

Got a ticket? Be prepared to dance, thanks to a setlist likely to include such hits as Emergency

on Planet Earth, Space Cowboy, Virtual Insanity and Deeper Underground.

Arguably the biggest name on

this year’s line-up, Alicia Keys

rose to international household

fame in 2001 when, aged just

20, her debut album Songs in A Minor

ratcheted up sales in excess of 12 million

The stellar debut earned her five Grammy

Awards and landed her her first Billboard

Hot 100 number one with the critically

acclaimed, piano-backed single Fallin’

She has since released five further studio

albums, producing a host of top-selling

singles such as You Don’t Know My Name,

If I Ain’t Got You, My Boo, which alongside

Usher earned her her second number

one, and feminist anthem Girl On Fire

Keys also collaborated with Jack White on

Another Way to Die, the title song to the

22nd official James Bond film, Quantum

of Solace.

Today, Keys is considered one of the

US’s most successful female musical icons,

with album sales in excess of 65 million

seeing her named the top R&B artist of the
