Trang 2Dr Eric Chan is a mathematics educator and author of several mathematics resource books He lectures on primary mathematics in both pre-service and in-service programmes at the National Institute of Education, Singapore Prior to this, he has had more than 10 years’ experience in teaching primary school mathematics and served as Head of Department (Mathematics) Currently, he is the author and co-author of the new syllabus primary mathematics textbooks and workbooks series, Targeting Mathematics, that are used in Singapore schools.
Workshop Synopsis
Part 1: The Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA)
Approach to Learning Mathematics
Children's sense-making of fundamental mathematics
concepts in the Singapore primary mathematics
classroom is fostered through the
Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) instructional approach The use of
concrete manipulatives and pictorial representations is
asserted to help children develop conceptual
understanding of the abstract representations This
workshop aims to help participants acquire a better
understanding of the CPA approach through hands-on
sessions for selected topics involving addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division at the Primary 1
to Primary 3 levels
Part 2: Teaching Problem Solving Using Heuristics
At the heart of the Singapore Primary Mathematics Curriculum is mathematical problem solving Children are taught to employ different problem-solving strategies in solving a variety of structured problems This workshop aims to acquaint participants on the use
of the following heuristics for the upper primary level (Primary 4 to 6): bar modelling, before-after concept, guess-and-check, make a supposition, identify a pattern, and the multiple-add/subtract strategies
