Margaret’s pupils have group lessons Each group has about a dozen pupils and each lesson lasts an hour, once a fortnight In addition, each pupil has one individual lesson a week with her Parents also have to attend the classes It is important that the parents take an active interest in the lessons
From the earliest lessons pupils learn to play by ear They do not even try to read music until they have been playing for several years, and for a long time there is a big difference between their playing and reading of music Margaret says that her method is not supposed to produce great violinists, and always suggests that pupils who perform particularly well should leave and study the violin using more traditional methods

Music and the Mind
Classical, pop, rap, folk people have different tastes One important question that has concerned scientists in recent years is whether one particular type of music improves your brain more than another

improve the power of learning?
A Bulgarian psychologist called George Lozanov designed a way to teach foreign languages that involved listening to certain classical music pieces He found that playing music such as Handel and Bach while teaching vocabulary greatly
increased the students’ speed of learning (4) _ That’s about 1,000 words and phrases!
Research has repeatedly shown that students who study music have higher results than those who don’t In a study of the ability of fourteen-year-old science students in seventeen countries, the top three countries were Hungary, Holland and Japan (5) _ Another report revealed that the school that have the highest academic achievement in the United States today spend 20 to 30 per cent of the day on the arts, particularly music
So, should you learn instrument or buy some classical music, or maybe some jazz? (6) _ Even if your intelligence doesn’t improve, at least you’ll enjoy listening to the music!
A The answer is probably yes to all of the above
B In one case, rats were tested to see how they would react to two types of music
C Using his system, students memorized half of vocabulary and phrases for the whole school term in one day
