Trang 23

expression has been around for at least a century and a half; there are references

to this expression that date from the second half of the nineteenth century

The expression “a blue moon” has come to refer to the second full moon occurring in any given calendar month A second full moon is not called a blue

moon because it is particularly blue or is any different in hue from the first full

moon of the month Instead, it is called a blue moon because it is so rare The moon needs a little more than 29 days to complete the cycle from full moon to full moon Because every month except February has more than 29 days, every month will have at least one full moon (except February, which will have a full moon unless there is a full moon at the very end of January and another full moon at the very beginning of March) It is on the occasion when a given

calendar month has a second full moon that a blue moon occurs This does not happen very often, only three or four times in a decade

The blue moons of today are called blue moons because of their rarity andnot because of their color; however, the expression “blue moon” may have comeinto existence in reference to unusual circumstances in which the moon actually appeared blue Certain natural phenomena of gigantic proportions can actually change the appearance of the moon from Earth The eruption of the Krakatoa volcano in 1883 left dust particles in the atmosphere, which clouded the sun and gave the moon a bluish tint This particular occurrence of the blue moon may

have given rise to the expression that we use today Another example occurred

more than a century later When Mount Pinatubo erupted in the Philippines in

1991, the moon again took on a blue tint.

1 This passage is about

A a phase of the moon B an unusual color

C a month on the calendar D an idiomatic expression

MODERN SURGERY

The need for a surgical operation, especially an emergency operation, almost always comes as a severe shock to the patient and his family Despite modern advances, most people still have an irrational fear of hospitals and anesthetics Patients do not often believe they really need surgery - cutting into apart of the body as opposed to treatment with drugs

In the early years of the twentieth century there was little specialization in surgery A good surgeon was capable of performing almost every operation that had been devised up to that time Today the situation is different Operations are now being carried out that were not even dreamed of 60 years ago The heart can

be safety opened and its valves repaired Clogged blood vessels can be cleaned

Trang 28

out, and broken ones mended or replaced A lung, the whole stomach, or even part of the brain can be removed and still permit the patient to live a comfortableand satisfactory life However, not every surgeon wants to, or is qualified to carry out every type of modern operation.

The scope of surgery has increased remarkably Its safety has increased too The hospital stay after surgery has been shortened to as little as a week for most major operations

Many developments in modern surgery are almost incredible They

include the replacement of damaged blood vessels with stimulated ones made of plastic; the replacement of heart valves with plastic substitutes; the transplanting

of tissues such as the lens of the eye; the invention of the artificial kidney to clean the blood of poisons at regular intervals and the development of heart and lung machines to keep patients alive during very long operations All these things open a hopeful vista for the future of surgery

One of the most revolutionary areas of modern surgery is that of organ transplants Until a few years ago, no person, except an identical twin, was able

to accept into his body the tissues of another person without reacting against them and eventually killing them Recently, however, it has been discovered thatwith the use of X-rays and special drugs, it is possible to graft tissues from one person to another which will survive for periods of a year or more Kidney’s have been successfully transplanted between non-identical twins Heart and lungtransplants have been reasonably successful in animals, though rejection

problems in human have yet to be solved

“Spare parts” surgery, the simple routine replacement of all worn-out

organ by new ones, is still a dream of the distant future As yet, surgery is not ready for such miracles In the machine, you can be happy if your doctor says to you ‘Yes, I think it is possible to operate on you for this condition.’

The dangers of dieting

Trang 32

Thanks to our modern life, with more and more time spent sitting down infront of computers than ever before, the number of overweight people is at a new high As people financially search for a solution to this problem, they often try some of the popular fad diets being offered Many people see fad diets as

innocuous ways of losing weight, and they are grateful to have them

Unfortunately, not only do fad diets usually do the trick, they can actually be dangerous for your health

Although permanent weight loss is the goal, few are able to achieve it Experts estimate that 95% of dieters return to their starting weight; or even add weight While the reckless use of fad diets can bring some initial results,

longterm results are very rare

Nonetheless, people who are fed up with the difficulties of changing their eating habits often return to fad diets Rather than being moderate, fad diets involve extreme dietary changes They advise eating only one type of food, or

they prohibit other types of foods entirely This results in a situation where a

person’s body doesn’t get all the vitamins and other things that it needs to stay healthy

One popular fad diet recommends eating lots of meat and animal

products, while nearly eliminating carbohydrates A scientific study from Britainfound that this diet is very high in fat According to the study, the increase of damaging fats in the blood can lead to heart disease and, in extreme cases, kidney failure Furthermore, diets that are too low in carbohydrates can cause the body to use its own muscle for energy The less muscle you have, the less food you use up, and the result is slower weight loss

Veteran dieters may well ask at this point, “What is ideal diet?” Well, to some extent, it depends on the individual A United States government agency has determined that to change your eating habits requires changing your

psychology of eating, and everyone has a different psychology That being said, the British study quoted above recommends a diet that is high in carbohydrates
