Unit 11: Books Language Focus

Lesson Plan

• Date of teaching: March 5th, 2009

1 Class description

- Level: 12th form student, intermediate

- Class size: 42 female students of class 12D1, Yen Hoa high school

2 Time 45 minutes

3 Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to :

- Use compound adjectives correctly

- Distinguish between transitive and intransitive verbs

4 Teaching aids: Text book, hand outs, chalk.

5 Skills: language use and writing.

6 Procedure:

Warm-up

- Game: Match up

- The first team with the most correct adjectives is the winner

- Declare the winner

Transition: part of our lesion today focuses on this type of compound adjectives

Compound adjectives: adj+ noun+ ed Activity 1: Match to form adjective compounds(taks a, p 143)

- Ask sts to match an adj in column A with a suitable noun in column B and then add –ed to the noun to form an adj compound

- Have sts work in pairs to compare answers

- Call one sts write the answer on the board then check with the whole class

- Check the meaning of new words

Sts do task a, individually and compare with their partners

Activity 2: gap filling(task b, p 143):

- tell sts to read the sentences and fill in each space with a

suitable compound adjectives just formed in the task a,

- Answer key:

Activity 3: Rewrite sentences using compound adjectives (handouts)

- Pair off sts and give out handouts

Sts work in pairs

Transitive and Intransitive verbs

- She walks to work

And only transitive verbs have passive form, but not all

of them can be changed into passive form

- The woman bought a lot of flowers

- He repeated the questions

Activity 1: complete the chart(p.144-145)

- Tell sts to read through the passage, and dicide if the verbs underlined are transitive or intransitive and put them in the correct coloumn

whether it is a noun phrase or adverbial phrase

- Have sts to compare answer with their partners

- Tell sts to change the sentences into passive voice if it is possible
