applications for drones

Explore STEM Concepts- flight dynamics, engineering design, the principals of flight, remote sensing and

computer coding

Practice Being an Engineer-define problems, solutions and then optimize a solution in a cyclical process

(test, refine and redesign)

“real-world” scenario to be used in the Foam Drone Activity

Things that Fly- youth test flying objects and their hand at engineering to

prepare them for the Foam Drone Activity

Activity 2: Foam Drone

Design a Foam Drone- youth work in teams to build a model drone to help

solve the problem from their Drone Adventure scenario

Design a Solution- teams experiment with the glider and sensor to prepare for

their “mission”

Test Remote Sensing- teams fly their model drones over their target and

collect video as they fly

Foam Flight Film Festival- teams present their video and describe their

design process

Activity 3: Code Copters

In Real Life

Design the Engineering Problem- youth work in teams to create a

“program” to guide a drone through a scenario

Design a Solution- teams will work through In Real Life commands or

computer coding with a Scratch program

Optimize Your Solution-teams will test, revise and run their “programs” to

make them as efficient as possible

Conclusion- team will share solutions and results and discuss success.

Activity 4 : LandingTake Action

Complete the Experiential Learning Model and extend participants experience through:

Career Exploration- research STEM careers and current UAS research and test sites.

Citizen Science- connect with professional scientists to assist in research.

local drone related discussions
