Để phát âm chính xác, ngoài việc nắm rõ cách phát âm các âm tiết của từ chúng ta cần phải biết rõ cách đặt trọng âm của từ

Có 2 qui tắc cơ bản về trọng âm của từ:

+ mỗi từ có một trọng âm duy nhất

+ Chỉ có trọng âm ở nguyên âm chứ không có ở phụ

Ngoại lệ: ma’chine, mis’take, re’sult, e’ffect, a’lone thì trọng âm chính nhấn vào âm tiết thứ 2

Quy tắc 2: Đa số các động từ có 2 âm tiết thì trọng âm chính được nhấn vào âm tiết thứ 2

Ngoại lệ: ‘offer, ’happen, ’answer, ’enter, ’listen, ’open, ’publish, ’finish, ’follow, ’argue thì

trọng âm chính rơi vào âm tiết đầu tiên

Quy tắc 3: Các từ tận cùng là các đuôi :-ade, -aire, -ee, -ese, -eer, -ete, -oo, -oon,

-aire, -ique, -esque thì trọng âm nhấn vào chính các âm này
