Space Considerations
The Sun Fire V480 server is five Rack Units (RU) high and 24 inches deep. The rack that you use must be able to accommodate these dimensions, aswell as the total weight of the server or servers, any other installedcomponents, and the rack kits The Sun expansion cabinet is 72 inches talland holds a power sequencer that allows an administrator (with the aid of
a colleague due to the weight involved) to install six Sun Fire V480 serversinto the rack (seven servers would fit into a rack, but the rack could onlypower six servers)
Caution – When you install servers into the rack, ensure that the rack issecurely bolted to the floor or has sturdy and extendable anti-tip legsinstalled and extended This prevents the cabinet from tipping when one
or more servers are fully extended out of the front of the cabinet

Environmental Monitoring and Control
The ambient temperatures of the CPU modules and the Fibre Channelbackplane are monitored by the Platform Information and Control Library(PICL) driver of the Solaris™ Operating System (Solaris OS) This
software polls the thermal monitoring devices that are connected to thethermal diodes and monitors the status of the fan trays
The server’s environment is also monitored at the Boot PROM level. These monitoring devices ensure that the devices being monitored areoperating within a prescribed temperature range If one or moremonitored devices are above or below their prescribed temperature range, warnings are issued to the system console and the system Fault LEDslight appropriately
Note –As a safeguard, a hardware trip point shuts down the server if the
CPU thermal set point is exceeded This procedure is not a graceful
shutdown
In addition to monitoring the temperature ranges of devices, the softwareand hardware components also monitor the system fans, power supplies, system LEDs, and the front panel system control switch
Temperature and Humidity Levels
To operate properly, the Sun Fire V480 server requires a temperaturerange between 41 degrees Fahrenheit (F) to 95 degrees F (5 degreesCelsius [C] to 35 degrees C) with a relative humidity between 20 percentand 80 percent
In a non-operating environment, the temperature range that must bemaintained is -4 degrees F to 140 degrees F (-20 degrees C to 60 degrees C)with a humidity reading of less than 95 percent
The Sun Fire V480 server incorporates several features to maintain propertemperature and cooling during operation, including environmentalmonitoring software and system fans
Trang 19Environmental Monitoring and Control

Airflow through the server moves from the front to the rear of theenclosure Two fan trays within the Sun Fire V480 server are responsiblefor this airflow and for maintaining the temperature within the enclosure, these are:
● Fan Tray 0 – CPU fan tray
● Fan Tray 1 – PCI fan tray

Power Supply Cooling
The power supplies are cooled separately Each power supply containstwo 60-millimeter (mm), three-wire fans for internal cooling

Sun Fire V480 Server Power Supplies
The two standard hot-swappable power supplies in the Sun Fire V480server provide N+1 redundancy to the system If one power supply fails, the system continues operating with the remaining operational powersupply
The power supplies have the following characteristics:
● Operate over an AC input range of 100 to 240VAC, at 50 to 60 hertz(Hz), without user intervention
● Capable of providing up to 1100 watts of direct current (DC) power
● Plug directly into connectors on the Power Distribution board
● Provide 48-volt (V) and 5V standby outputs to the server
● The 48V output powers point-of-load DC/DC converters thatprovide 1.5V, 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.3V, 5V, and 12V to the components
● Output current is shared equally between both supplies by means ofactive current-sharing circuitry
Note –Each power supply has its own AC inlet and power cord, therefore
an ideal configuration would be to plug each power supply into separate
AC circuits If a circuit fails in this case, the second circuit is more likely toremain functional, providing power to the system
Accessing the Power Supplies
The power supplies are accessible from the front of the system chassis (seeFigure 1-2 on page 1-8) However, the power supplies’ corresponding ACoutlets are located at the rear of the chassis (see Figure 1-5 on page 1-13).The power supplies are located in bays 0 and 1, starting at the left whenviewed from the front panel
Note – Power supply bay 0 or bay 1 should always be occupied becausetheir internal fans help cool the disk drives

Power Distribution Board (PDB)
The power supplies connect to the Power Distribution board (PDB), andprovide distributed power to the system centerplane, the PCI Riser board, and other internal components
The PDB is located at the rear of the Sun Fire V480 server (seeFigure 1-11)
Figure 1-11 Sun Fire V480 Server Power Distribution Board
The PDB is not connected to the server components with a cable Instead,
the power supplies connect directly into the PDB, providing 5VDCstandby and 48VDC power to the CPUs and to the server (see Figure 1-12
on page 1-23)

The Field Effect Transistor (FET) switch is designed to handle largeamounts of current and voltage The FET switches control the 48VDCpower to the CPUs by provide overcurrent protection to the CPUs Thethird FET switch provides the same protection to the system power
The logic signals are the Power on and Power OK (POK) signals delivered
by the different system components when the system is powering up.Each converter issues a Power on signal upon receiving power and a POKsignal after successfully powering up
The DC/DC converters can be a single point of failure for the system. There are LEDs associated with each of the converters that are pertinent tosystem power-on See ‘‘Sun Fire V480 Server LEDs’’ on page 1-25 forfurther details

Power is passed to the centerplane and then converted by the DC/DCconverters to provide:
● 1.5V, which provide 16 Amps for bus termination
● 3.3V, which provide 30 Amps for logic signals
● 2.5V, which provide Amps to 10/100/1000 Ethernet chips
● 1.8V, which provide Amps for the Cassini ASICs
Power then passes to the PCI Riser board and is distributed across threeDC/DC converters to provide (see Figure 1-13):
● 3.3V, which provide 30 Amps required to provide PCI support
● 5V, which convert power to be used by the centerplane and the PCIRiser board to provide the 21 Amps required for PCI support, diskdrives, the DVD-ROM, the front panel LEDs, and system logic
● 12V, which convert power to be used by the centerplane and the PCIRiser board to provide the 5 Amps required for PCI support, diskdrives, fans, and the -12V converter for PCI support

Sun Fire V480 Server LEDs
The Sun Fire V480 server contains several different LEDs for determiningsystem status and assisting in diagnostics These LEDs are:
● Front and rear panel LEDs
● Disk drive LEDs
● Fan tray LEDs
● Power supply LEDs
● Centerplane LEDs
● PCI riser LEDs
Upon bootup, all LEDs are individually toggled on and off to ensure thatthey are functioning properly If a fault occurs, the appropriate LEDilluminates to indicate a problem
Because all front panel, rear panel, and interior status LEDs are powered
by the server’s 5V standby power source, Fault LEDs remain illuminatedfor any fault condition that results in a shutdown
