HOW I LEARNED

TO FLY

Goosebumps - 52 R.L Stine

(An Undead Scan v1.5)

Trang 3

Do you know why?

He thinks he’s better than me—and I know

he isn’t

I’m Jack Johnson And I’m not the kind ofkid who likes to enter contests Really I don’tlike to compete

I always let my dad win at chess Just cause it means so much to him to win And

be-I even let my dog Morty win our wrestlingmatches on the living room floor

Trang 4

But Wilson never gives me a break Healways has to prove that he’s the best ateverything.

If I’m chewing bubble gum, he tries toblow bigger bubbles When my bubble istwice as big as Wilson’s, he says that his isrounder!

If my bubble is bigger—and rounder—he

sticks his finger in mine and pops it all over

my face

He’s trouble, that guy Real trouble.Especially when Mia Montez is around.Mia is the cutest girl at Malibu MiddleSchool Ask anybody Everything about Mia

is cute

She has big green eyes and a perfect, littlenose I think Mia’s nose is the first thing I no-ticed about her I really admired that nose Iguess that’s because my nose is kind of big.And Mia has the prettiest hair Short, straight black hair Really shiny My hair is

Trang 5

dark—like Mia’s—but it’s curly Way toocurly.

Know what Mia is totally crazy about?Hearts It sort of makes sense She was born

on Valentine’s Day

She wears a heart necklace every day toschool And a charm bracelet with lots of sil-ver and gold hearts dangling from it

On her right hand, she wears a ruby redheart ring And she has earrings that match

She looks so cute in all those hearts.

Anyway, when Mia is around, that’swhen Wilson is at his worst! He has to showoff in front of her And he has to prove thathe’s better than me

Wilson likes to compete Wilson likes towin

So what choice do I have? I have to showWilson that he’s wrong I have to prove thatI’m as good as he is I don’t want Mia tothink I’m a loser

Trang 6

* * *

“Jack, can I borrow your eraser?” My friendEthan Polke tapped me on the shoulder.Ethan sits behind me during free period inschool He never has erasers He’s alwayslosing them

“Sure.” I turned around and handed himthe new one I bought yesterday Because helost my old one the day before

I hardly use my eraser anyway At leastnot when I’m drawing superheroes

I love to draw superheroes And I’mreally good at it I never have to fix a singleline

“Hey—that’s awesome!” Ethan pointedover my shoulder to my sketch of The Incred-ible Laser Man

The Incredible Laser Man is my newestsuperhero I draw superheroes every day Inthe morning before I go to school Duringfree period And at night after I finish my

Trang 7

homework And then, when I go to bed, Idream about them.

One day I’m going to be a comic bookartist I have a folder at home packed with

my superhero drawings The Fearless Falcon.Shadow Boy The Masked Mantis They’reall going to be famous one day I know it

I studied my sketch of The IncredibleLaser Man He wore a really cool jumpsuit. His huge muscles bulged against the tightmaterial

A powerful lightning bolt streaked acrosshis massive chest Two more lightning boltszigzagged down his muscular legs

I drew a pair of mysterious black goggles

to hide his eyes—so no one would know histrue identity I didn’t know it either, yet.First I draw the character—then I make

up the story

The Incredible Laser Man held hismighty arms up to the sky I started to draw

Trang 8

laser beams shooting from his fingertips Thebell rang just as I finished.

I jumped up from my seat I couldn’t wait

to show The Incredible Laser Man to Mia.She was going to love it!

“Hey, Mia!” I held my drawing out to her

“Want to see my—”

“Out of my way, Jackie.” I turned and

saw Wilson He was carrying a drawing too

He shoved me hard from behind

I fell over Mia’s desk My drawing flewfrom my hand and fluttered to the floor

“Thank you, Wilson!” Mia held Wilson’sdrawing in her hand She flashed him a bigsmile “Look at this, Jack Look what Wilsondrew.”

I glanced over Mia’s shoulder Wilson

had drawn a team of superheroes FIVE of

them Colored in

In sparkly letters at the top he had ten: MIA’S PROTECTORS

writ-Yuck

Trang 9

“Look what Jackie drew!” Wilson cried.

He snatched my drawing from the floor

“Wilson, don’t call me Jackie!” I clared “I told you a million times, I reallyhate being called that.”

de-“Sorry I forgot.” Wilson smirked “I

won’t do it again—Jackie.”

I glared at Wilson “Give me back mydrawing!” I snapped I reached out for it ButWilson was too fast for me He shoved it infront of Mia’s face

“It’s The Incredible Lazy Man!” hehooted

Mia giggled at his dumb joke

I wanted to disappear

“It’s very cute, Jack,” Mia said, handing

it back to me Then she and Wilson slipped

on their backpacks and headed outside.Okay—so Mia liked Wilson’s drawingbetter No big deal, I told myself I stuffed mydrawing into my backpack

Just wait until we get outside

Trang 10

Just wait until Mia sees my new one-speed Silver Streak racing bike.

twenty-She’s going to love it!

I ran outside—just in time to see Miacircling my new bike “Cool!” she said, try-ing to catch her reflection in the handlebars

“Maybe I’ll ask Mom and Dad for a bike likethis for my birthday.”

I knew Mia would be impressed

“You don’t want that for your birthday,” Wilson snickered “You want this!”

Wilson pointed to his new bike.

His new heavy-duty dirt bike

“Oh, wow!” Mia exclaimed “WOW!”

My stomach twisted into a knot

“I don’t like those skinny racing bikes,”Wilson sneered, shaking his head at my bike

“Too flimsy I like a REAL bike.”

I was so steamed! I wanted to take hisbig dirt bike and ride it back and forth overWilson’s head

Trang 11

My new bike was awesome It wasn’tflimsy at all.

Why did everything have to be a contest? And why did Wilson always win?

Little did I know as the three of us rodehome that the contest was only beginning!

Trang 12

“I win!” Wilson shouted, jumping off his bike

He leaned it against the tree in front of myhouse He pumped his fists in the air “The Sil-ver Snail comes in second!” he announced as Irode up, drenched in sweat

“Great race, guys,” Mia said, pedaling up

to us

I wanted to ride home from school next

to Mia But Wilson wanted to race—and Miathought it was a cool idea

The hills of Malibu are awesome for cing They wind around and around I love toclimb those hills on my bike, then go speedingdown And I’m really great at taking some ofthe sharp turns

ra-I gripped the handlebars of my bike

Trang 13

I was confident.

I had twenty-one speeds

We raced

Wilson won

I leaned my bike next to Wilson’s, trying

to catch my breath Morty, my rust-coloredcocker spaniel, trotted out from the backyard

to greet us

“Hey, Morty!” The hearts on Mia’s let clinked softly as she scratched Morty’sneck Morty likes Mia as much as I do Histail wagged like crazy He jumped up to lickher face Then he started on me

brace-“Whoa Here comes Wilson’s dog.” Miapointed across the street to Wilson’s house.Wilson’s enormous Labrador charged fullspeed toward us

“Down, boy.” Wilson laughed as his dogleaped up on him He nearly knocked Wilsonover

“Terminator is TWICE as big as Morty,”Wilson bragged to Mia

Trang 14

“But Morty is smarter,” I boasted “Wetaught Morty to carry his food dish to the sinkwhen he’s finished eating.”

“That’s pretty smart,” Mia agreed

“You call that smart?” Wilson sneered

“We taught Terminator to answer the phonewhen we’re not home.”

“That’s definitely smarter,” Mia said

“That is really, really smart.”

“That’s not so smart,” I argued “Mortycan roll over and—”

“Oh, noooo!”

We all heard a cry

Mrs Green, my next-door neighbor, poked her head out of her front door andscreamed She stared in horror at the treeacross the street The tree in front of Wilson’shouse

There was Olive—Mrs Green’s new ten—sitting on the edge of a high tree limb. Her fur stood on end Her little body shook. She let out a soft whimper

Trang 15

kit-“Oh, poor Olive!” Mia cried “She’s ing to fall! Someone has to save her!”

go-“I will!” Wilson and I shouted together

Oh, no, you won’t, Wilson! I thought. You’re not going to win this time

With a burst of speed, I raced across thestreet My sneakers pounded the sidewalk Ireached the tree first!

“Give me a boost,” I ordered Wilson fore he could argue, I wrapped my armsaround the tree trunk and raised my foot.Wilson gave me a boost

Be-I inched my way up the trunk Be-I gazedout—over the hilltops My eyes followedtheir winding path down, down, down Rightdown to the beach The beach stretched alongthe coast for miles

I glanced down and smiled at Mia

“Hurry, Jack!” she cried nervously

“Don’t worry, Mia,” I declared “I’m on

my way!”

Trang 16

Yes! I am on my way to save Olive And

you’re not, Wilson.

I climbed higher and higher—until Ireached the limb where Olive sat Her wholebody shivered with fright She let out a terri-fied squeak when she spotted me

I studied the tree limb It was veryslender

I didn’t know if it would hold my weight

“What are you waiting for, Jackie?”Wilson shook the tree trunk “I’ll come upand get her if you’re afraid.”

Ha! No way, Wilson!

I crawled out on the limb Very slowly.Olive whimpered

I stopped

I crawled out some more

Olive inched away from me

I stopped again

Olive stared into my eyes Then she liftedher front paws—to jump!

Trang 17

Down below, I could hear Mrs Greenand Mia gasp.

“No, Olive,” I begged softly “Stay.”

I moved a little closer—close enough tograb her now

I slowly reached out to her

My fingertips brushed against her softfur

Then my knee slipped off the branch Ilost my balance I lurched to the left

“Noooo!”

I let out a shrill cry as I dropped from thetree

Trang 18

Wilson caught me in his arms.

He held me like a baby Great Just great…

I heard clapping Mia clapping

Then Wilson dropped me on the pavement

“Owwww!” My head hit the cement with

a thud

Trang 19

“Are you okay?” Mia’s voice sounded faraway.

“Yes, I’m—” I started to answer, gling to sit up That’s when I saw that Miawasn’t paying any attention to me

strug-She was bent over Wilson, studying aswollen finger he held out to her

“I’m okay,” Wilson assured her “Jackdoesn’t weigh much.”

“Nooooo!” Mrs Green shrieked

He looked so sure of himself as hecrossed the sagging branch He scooped upOlive in one hand Then he shimmied downthe tree trunk

Trang 20

“Thank you! Thank you!” Mrs Greenthrew her arms around Wilson’s wideshoulders and hugged him.

My narrow shoulders drooped I feltmiserable

With Olive cradled safely in her arms,Mrs Green returned to her house

I watched her walk across her lawn Mygaze shifted to my yard—where Morty andTerminator wrestled in the grass Terminatorbatted Morty with his huge paw He sentMorty into orbit over the hedges

Terminator charged across the lawn, jumped over the shrubs, and reached Mortybefore my poor dog landed Terminatorknocked him out of the air and pounced onhim

Morty yelped helplessly as Terminatorpinned him to the ground

“Terminator, stop!” I shouted, headingover to them

Trang 21

“Leave them alone They’re just ing!” Wilson called.

play-But I trudged across the lawn to rescueMorty

“Even Wilson’s dog wins all the time,”

I grumbled “Morty and I are losers Totallosers.”

“Hey, guys, I’ve got to go home!” Miajumped on her bike “Don’t forget about mybirthday party on Saturday!”

“I’ll be there!” Wilson told her “And I’mgoing to bring Terminator He has a surprisefor you.”

Trang 22

party games I hate to play party games.Especially if Wilson is there.

“I… uh… may have to go somewherewith my parents,” I lied “I think I promisedI’d go with them And then I promised mydad I’d help clean out the basement.”

“You did that last week,” Wilson clared “Remember—I had to help you dragout the trash can It was too heavy for you.”

de-“Well, we didn’t finish,” I said, thinkingquickly I’m such a terrible liar

Mia grasped the gold heart around herneck “You have to come, Jack The partydoesn’t start till six I really want you tocome.”

“Well… I’ll try,” I told her

“Great, Jack See you!” Mia hopped onher bike and pedaled up the hill toward herhouse

Should I go? I asked myself, heading up

my driveway

Mia said she really wants me to come

Trang 23

So should I forget how much I hateparties—and go?

Trang 24

I stepped up to Mia’s front door I feltreally nervous.

For one thing, I’d never met Mia’s newstepmother Mia spends half the year with herreal mother in Brentwood And the other halfhere in Malibu with her dad and new step-mother

“Come on in! It’s so nice to meet you I’mAngela Montez,” Mia’s stepmother greeted

me at the door “Everyone’s been waiting foryou!”

Trang 25

“Really?” I asked “For me?”

“Really!” Mrs Montez exclaimed.Mia’s stepmom had the most beautifulsmile I liked her right away

I followed her to the rec room doorway. She waved to Mia across the room

“Mia—look who’s finally here,” she called

“Wilson!”

“Angela—that’s not Wilson That’sJack!” Mia called back

“Oh Sorry, Jack.” Mrs Montez patted

me on the shoulder “Well, have a nice timeanyway.”

Mia grabbed my arm and tugged me ward The room was jammed with kids Wepushed our way through the crowd

for-Red streamers hung from the ceiling for-Red

is Mia’s favorite color I spotted my friendsRay and Ethan in the crowd They wereopening plastic bags filled with red balloons

“Hey—Jack Help us blow these thingsup,” Ray called

Trang 26

“Okay Be right there.” I liked Ethan andRay They were great guys Fun to hang outwith.

I handed Mia her birthday present Iwanted to give her something she wouldreally, really like I had walked around themall for hours searching for just the rightthing

“Thanks, Jack I can’t wait to open it!”Mia said, gazing at the red stars on the wrap-ping paper “Look! The paper matches myoutfit!” Mia pointed to the red stars on herwhite T-shirt and leggings

Mia liked the wrapping paper That made

me feel pretty good

Ray and Ethan tossed over some loons—the long kind—and we started blow-ing them up

bal-After we blew up about fifty of them, webatted them through the air One after anoth-

er Real fast A storm of red balloons whirledover our heads

Trang 27

The kids went wild Leaping up Battingthem back.

“Over here, Jack!” they screamed “Hitsome over here!”

It was cool

Then Wilson walked in

“Hey, everyone Watch this!” Hesnatched two balloons in flight He twistedthem so fast, his hands moved in a blur “Ta-da!” He held his creation over his head foreveryone to see

It was the figure of a man—with hugeears, stubby legs, and a fat belly It looked ex-actly like our gym teacher, Mr Grossman

“Hey! It’s The Gross Man!” one of thekids yelled out

Everyone laughed

“Awesome, Wilson!” Mia’s friend Karashouted

“Isn’t Wilson a riot?” Mia said to me

“He can do anything.”

Trang 28

“Yeah,” I said, slinking back into thecorner of the room “He’s a real riot.”

“Make something else!” Mia clapped.Wilson grabbed some balloons and made

a pig with antlers

And a tiny elephant with a four-foottrunk

And an enormous chicken

Everyone went crazy over that chicken

I was almost glad when Mia announced itwas time to play Twister Almost

I hate Twister I told you—I hate all partygames

Everyone cleared the center of the room

so Mia could set the game out

I shrank farther back into my corner Ieased myself down to the floor I did it slowly

so no one would notice me

“Jackie!” Wilson dove over the playingmat and yanked me up “It’s time to see if youcan beat the champ!”

Wilson is great at Twister Of course

Trang 29

“Uh, Wilson I don’t really feel like ing.” I wrestled free of his grip “I’ll spin thespinner so everyone else can play.”

play-“Not necessary, Jack.” Wilson’s mouthspread into the widest grin I’d ever seen

I knew that grin meant trouble

He placed his fingers in his mouth and letout a shrill whistle Terminator bounded intothe room

“Spin, boy!” Wilson ordered the dog.Terminator trotted over to the spinner onthe floor He gave it a hard nudge with hisnose—and it spun

Trang 30

“Left foot blue.” Mia announced the nextmove.

Only two moves and we were all atangled mess Wilson’s position was secure. He’s fast He always finds the easiest spot toland on first

I’m not that fast

I had to stretch my left leg wayback—over Ray’s head—to reach a blue dot

I felt a sharp pain in my side

Please, don’t let me fall, I prayed I don’t want to be the first one out If I am—Wilson will never let me forget it.

My palms began to sweat

Three kids had their legs draped over myright arm I felt my hand slipping off the reddot

Trang 31

“No, it isn’t!” Ethan came to my defense.

“Spin, Terminator!”

Terminator spun

Right foot yellow

Yellow Yellow I searched frantically for

a yellow circle I spotted one

I hoisted my leg up and over Ray’s back

And that’s when I heard the riiiip.

My shorts split wide open

My face burned red

I jumped up from the game—andstaggered from the room

“Wait, Jack!” Mia chased after me

“Don’t go!”

No way I was going to stay

No way

Trang 32

I felt totally humiliated.

Mia caught up to me and blocked thedoor “Please?” she asked softly “Pleasestay?”

Could I say no?

Of course not

Mrs Montez gave me a pair of Mia’sbrother’s shorts to wear, and I returned to therec room

Everyone was seated at a long table, ing hot dogs I had to take the only chairleft—next to Wilson

eat-I lifted up my hot dog eat-I opened mymouth to take a bite

“Whoa Wait a minute!” Wilson pushed

my hand away from my mouth “You call

that a hot dog?”

He held his hot dog next to mine He had

a foot-long hot dog TWICE as big as myregular one

He threw back his head and howled Then

he gulped down his hot dog in two bites

Trang 33

He grinned that big, horrible, Wilsongrin.

He was driving me CRAZY

A gross glob of mustard stuck to thecorner of his mouth I wanted to wipe itacross his face

Should I do it? I asked myself Should Igive him a mustard bath?

Before I could move, Mia announced itwas time to open the presents Wilsonjumped up and headed into the livingroom—where the presents sat, piled high.Everyone followed

Mia opened Kara’s present first—a bunch

of hair scrunchies with red hearts Then sheopened Ray and Ethan’s present A butterflyjigsaw puzzle—with over a thousand pieces.Mia reached for my present next

I held my breath

She carefully untied the red ribbon Thenshe ripped the paper open—and gasped

Trang 34

“Ohhh, Jack!” she exclaimed “How didyou know I wanted this one?” She held up

my present for everyone to see “It’s the new

CD from my favorite group—Purple Rose.”

I knew she would love it

“Thank you, Jack!” She set my presentdown on a table beside her She reached forthe next one An envelope—just an envelope

of present is that?

Mia stared into the envelope for a ment Then she screamed “Oh, wow! Oh,wow! Oh, wow!”

mo-She held up Wilson’s present

Two tickets

Two tickets to the Purple Rose concert atthe Hollywood Bowl next month

Trang 35

Front row seats.

“Oh, wow!” she shrieked again “This istotally awesome!”

Wilson shot me his big Wilson grin

I couldn’t take it any longer I let out afurious scream—and ran out of the house

Trang 36

I didn’t know where I was going—and Ididn’t care I just had to get away from theparty.

“Stop, Jack! Come back!” I heard Mia call

I glanced back and saw Mia charging after

me Ray, Ethan, and Kara were chasing metoo

I didn’t slow down I followed the windingpath down the hill I ran right past my houseand kept on running

Trang 37

“Jack! Come back!” Mia shouted.

I shot another glance over my shoulder. They were catching up

I ran harder Past some darkened housesthat were set back in the hill, hidden behindtrees

I picked up speed as the road continued

to curve downward Practically flying downnow My toes jammed against the front of mysneakers as I ran I couldn’t stop if I wantedto

I ran until the road leveled out at the tom of the hill—where a fence stretched outfor miles, separating the beach from the road

bot-I darted across the road and chargedthrough the fence

“Jack! Jack!” My friends’voices drifteddown the hillside, over the steady roar of theocean in front of me

I peered up and down the stretch ofbeach Staring at house after house Theysprawled out on the high part of the beach-

Trang 38

front, with steps that led down to the sand.Lights from the houses washed over the sand, making the beach bright and silvery.

No place to hide

No place…

Suddenly, an idea flashed into my mind. The abandoned Dorsey house I couldhide there The Dorsey house used to be one

of the most beautiful beach houses in Malibu. But no one had lived in it in years Just a big,old wreck now A great place to hide!

“Jack! Where are you?” Mia’s voicefloated over the fence

Better hurry Before they catch up

I ran down the beach, past houses withswimming pools and tennis courts I ran andran—and finally, I came to the Dorsey house

I stopped and stared at it What a wreck! The wide, two-story house once had along awning that stretched all along the deck. But the awning had fallen from its poles The

Trang 39

torn canvas lay heaped on the deck, flapping

in the ocean breeze

I stepped carefully Several boards weremissing from the deck Others were crackedand broken

I leaped over a hole and made my way tothe door I turned the knob

The wooden door had swollen from theconstant wetness I had to ram my shoulderagainst it to get it to open I ducked inside

“Jack! Where are you?” Ray’s voice rangout from the side of the house

I quietly closed the door behind me

An aroma of rotting wood and sour moldgreeted me I squinted in the darkness, trying

to figure out what room I was in

I stood in an entranceway Beyond it, infront of me, was a living room Two chairswith ripped seat cushions stood against onewall The back wall of the room was com-pletely made of glass Outside I could see thedark ocean waves crashing against the shore

Trang 40

To the left was a kitchen To the right, along hall That’s where the bedrooms prob-ably are, I thought, as I made my way slowlytoward them, leaning one hand on the dampwall.

“Jaaack Jaaack.” My friends’shouts ted through the closed windows But theywere fading now Distant

drif-I walked into a bedroom Empty—exceptfor a bare mattress on the floor that theDorseys had left behind

Back in the hall, I groped the walls ing to find my way in the dark

Try-I stumbled forward—and tripped Oversomething big It landed on the floor with a

loud CRASH!

I jumped back in fear Then leaned over

to see what it was Just an old surfboard, Irealized I let out a long sigh

I moved back into the entranceway Intothe kitchen The wooden floor creaked be-neath my feet
