Looking For Numbers
My brother wants to play a game
I want to read my book
He says car games are much more fun
So I agree to look
On car trips we play number games,
Like Find a Green 11.
Today we choose to play a game
Called Who Can Spy a 7?
I notice numbers everywhere,
On shirts and license plates
There’s one up there on that front door There’s one on that blue gate

Trang 4Going Up
When I am climbing up the stairs
I take them one by one
I climb up very slowly, When you count, it’s hard to run
I know how many steps there are
I count them every day
I climb and count up 40 steps,
When I have been away
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
By 10 I’m feeling sore.
18, 19, 20
Are there really 20 more?
I stop to rest, then carry on
36, 37, 38 Just 2 more steps and I’ll be home
A cozy chair awaits
I see a 6, an 8, a 3
On signs up in the hills
I see a 1, a 5, a 10
On Mother’s money bills
But where oh where are all the 7s?
I don’t see even one
I think I’d rather read my book
This searching game is done
Too late! I spy a 7!
It’s on the clock up there
There’s another on the page I read
Oh no! They’re everywhere!
Trang 5Going Down
When I go down I sometimes jump
I take stairs 2 by 2.
I don’t touch every step that way
2 at a time is what I do
My staircase, it has 40 steps.
So when I jump by 2s.
I only step on 20 stairs.
Just 20 and I’m through.
Once I jumped the steps in 5s.
My father helped me do it
Instead of 40 we touched 8.
We were down before we knew it

Trang 6Counting Pops
Sometimes when I’m popping corn
I try to count the pops
I count each popping kernel
Sometimes I shout, “Please stop!”
At fi rst I count them 1 by 1.
But then they pop too fast
I count by 2s 2, 4, 6, 8.
How long does popping last?
Now they’re popping quickly
And I must count by 5s
5, 10, 15, 20 The kernels rise and dive
Now they’re popping faster
It’s hard to count the pops
But I will keep on trying Until the last pop stops
Trang 7Moon Shapes
Night after night
I stand at my window
Night after night The sky becomes dark
Night after night
A new friend will greet me
Sometimes it is round
Sometimes it’s an arc
One night my moon friend Was shaped like a circle
One night a crescent moon Curved in the sky
One night 1/2 of a circle
Looked down at me
And one night a 3/4 moon
Whispered “Hi.”

Trang 8Making Change
5 pennies are the same
As a nickel every time
But if you change 10 pennies
You’ll get 2 nickels or 1 dime.
Ask someone to change a dime
You’ll get 10 pennies or
You might receive 2 nickels
Please don’t ask for any more
A quarter’s worth more pennies,
25 to be exact
Or give someone 5 nickels
If you want a quarter back
A quarter’s also worth
3 nickels and a dime
A quarter beats the other coins
Every single time
Half and Half
When you sat down at lunch today, You looked so sad I heard you say,
“I lost my lunch What should I do?” And this is what I said to you
“Let’s share my lunch I’ll give you some
A bit, a piece, a half, a crumb
My sandwich has been cut in two
1/2 for me 1/2 for you.
Let’s break up my banana now
And then we’ll share I’ll show you how
We’ll make 4 pieces all the same.
Now close your eyes We’ll play a game
You pick 2 pieces I will too
1/2 for me 1/2 for you.
One more thing and then we’re done Let’s count my raisins Counting’s fun
I count 20 Now let’s share.
I’ll put mine here I’ll put yours there
You have 10, and I do too.
1/2 for me 1/2 for you.”
penny
dime
nickel quarter
Trang 9The Highest Number
I live on the 14th fl oor.
It’s hard to climb that high
So I must take an elevator, And ride up toward the sky
I like to push the buttons
14 is near the top
Sometimes we zoom straight upward Sometimes we make a stop
Some people live on lower fl oors,
Like 2 or 3 or 4.
I push their buttons for them, Then stand back from the door
They all get out, but I stay in
I wave goodbye, and then It’s time to ride up higher,
So I push 14 again.
