Trang 4I Introduction
Teaching is considered as one type of art What to teach, how to teach and what kind of teaching aids to use to make our lessons more effective are the most important issues for each teacher
English is a communicative subject, so teaching aids such as pictures, posters, real things and so on are very necessary Without them, English lessons become boring and unattractive
Nowadays, thanks to the supporting of Information Technology (IT) teaching and learning English have had a remarkable development It not only helps teachers save time but also makes students access to their lessons easier, so applying IT in teaching becomes an essential task
Basing on this demand, I would like to share with you my ideas about how to use Microsoft PowerPoint in teaching English Microsoft PowerPoint can be applied to teaching vocabulary, grammar, listening, speaking, reading, writing skills or organizing games in English classes However, in this report I only discuss about applying Microsoft PowerPoint to teaching and checking vocabulary as well as organizing games in English classes
Trang 5II Applying Microsoft PowerPoint to making lesson plans to teach vocabulary
Teaching vocabulary is one of the basic requirements for a lesson In each lesson, there may be several new words which are the keys to understand sentences or even all the lesson If students do not understand the new words, their learning will be very difficult and not effective Therefore, I always provide
my students with important new words in each lesson in different ways such as using visuals, realia, mime, situations, examples, synonym, antonym and translation Depending on each word or word phrase I select a suitable technique
to elicit what I need from my students Of course, when using realia, mime, synonym or antonym we don’t need to apply PP However, I myself have realized that applying PP to teaching vocabulary with pictures, situations, and examples is very suitable and effective
1 Applying MS PowerPoint to teaching vocabulary with pictures
Pictures can be regarded as a useful “weapon” of teachers in teaching vocabulary Lovely and colorful pictures always attract our students Looking at pictures and finding out correlative words seem easy for them, thus new words are also more deeply remembered However, the current problem is that in order to have suitable and beautiful pictures, we often must spend so much time, energy and even money on preparation like collecting, drawing, printing, taking them to school and then keeping them for a long time Especially, when there is a big amount of pictures it can be a difficulty for teachers In this situation, using PP is the best solution It helps us save time and energy
Some people think that applying PP is very complicated However, let’s look
at my following example it’s so
simple
In Grade 8, Unit 14 – Lesson 3:
Listen – Grade 8, I prepare to teach the
word “snorkel” as following
Trang 6 Step 1: Click right mouse on the picture which you want to insert (in this situation, it is the picture of “snorkel”), select Copy.
Step 2: At the slide that needs inserting picture, Click right mouse, select Paste.
Step 3: Resize the picture until it’s suitable with my slide.
Trang 7 Step 4: Add effect(s) by clicking “Slide show” menu | Custom Animation | Add Effect | Entrance | (one effect which I like)
I often also write suggesting questions below the pictures to help my students find out words or word phrases more easily
For example:
Step 1: Click the Text box icon on the Drawing toolbar then press and hold
the left mouse button on the slide to draw a Text box under the picture
Trang 8 Step 2: Type the question “What kind of sport is this?” in the Text box.
Step 3: Add Effect to the Text box (see picture 4)
2 Applying MS PowerPoint to making lesson plans to teach vocabulary with examples
Giving examples to elicit new words from students is also an effective method Teaching vocabulary using examples helps students not only know about the meaning of the words, their pronunciation… but also understand their forms and how to use them With good students I can only speak out my examples They listen to me and then find out words or word phrases However, with the students whose listening skill is not good enough to understand my examples, showing examples on the screen is necessary It’s much easier for them to find out words
or word phrases by both listening to my examples and looking at the examples on the screen
For example: In Grade 8 (Unit 4: Our past – Lesson 1: Getting started - Listen and Read)
I prepare to teach the word “folktale” with the following steps:
Create a Text box (see Picture 6) and type my example with a blank where the target words will be inserted in
So Dua, Cay Khe, Cay Tre Tram Dot are …………
Create another text box and type the target word “folktale”
folktale
Add effects to target word (see picture 4)
Drag and drop the second text box into the blank in the first text box
Trang 9Picture 2: Step 2
After playing video games all day, I feel tired and dizzy
3 Applying MS PowerPoint to making lesson plans to teach vocabulary with situations.
Besides pictures and examples, situations are also one kind of teaching aids which I often use to teach vocabulary The steps to prepare a slide show with situations are the same as the ones with examples
In Unit 15: Going out Lesson 2: A2 - A3 (Grade 7), the word “dizzy” is prepared to teach like this:
III Applying MS PowerPoint to making lesson plans to check vocabulary
To help students remember new words and revise the words we have several techniques such as: matching, Rub out and remember, what and where, bingo, crossword, ect…
With the support of MS PowerPoint, I can arrange a lot of interesting activities through which checking vocabulary is carried out And these are some of typical examples
1 Matching
My students are asked to match pictures with suitable words or word phrases The steps are done as following:
Insert pictures into a slide (see picture 1 and 2)
Insert text boxes and type words or word phrases (words or word phrases are put in a random order compared with the picture order)
Draw lines to match pictures with suitable words or word phrases
Add Effect to lines (see picture 4) For example: in Unit 4: Our past - Lesson 4: Read, I check the following words: “rag, folktale, Little Pea, Stout Nut”
Trang 10folktale Stout Nut rag Little Pea
2 Rub out and remember (R.O.R)
In this technique, teachers ask students to read word by word, then rub out word by word and students are required to repeat the rubbed words in the right order Steps are done as following:
Select textboxes and type words or word phrases
Number the words
Make the words or word phrases disappear one by one by selecting Add
Effect | Exit | (choose one effect I like).
For examples in Unit 1: My friends – Lesson 1: Getting Started – Listen and Read (Grade 8) I check the following words:
Trang 11
3 Crossword
My students are asked to choose any boxes and guess the letter in each box After the game ends, my students can find out the word in the column
Steps are done as following:
Put boxes in horizontal and vertical lines by kicking AutoShapes and choosing a square
Make a cover by press Ctrl + C to copy, Ctrl + V to paste a cover
Choose colors for boxes and covers by kicking double Format AutoShapes/ fill Color (colors of boxes and covers are not the same)
Click right side of the mouse to enter Add Text and type words and then cover the boxes
Put covers in the vertical lines in to the same group
Select a link to open the covers
Select add effect for opening the covers
IV Applying MS PowerPoint to organizing games in English classes
Organizing suitable games in English classes is very important It attracts students, especially primary and secondary ones With suitable and attractive games, our class atmosphere becomes exciting and interesting So our students are eager to take part in studying activities Thanks to MS PowerPoint I can create a lot of nice games
1 “Magical ice – creams”
This game can be used to give feedback for any kinds of exercises I show some numbers on the screen Some numbers contain some very delicious “ice – creams” However some others contain a mouse or some mice which will eat one
or some ice – creams More terribly, some numbers contain the Sun which will melt the ice - creams completely I have my students play the game in two teams, take turn to solve the requested problems, for examples: answering the questions, filling in the gaps, matching,….If their answers are correct, they can choose numbers on the screen to find out the ice – creams At the end of the game, which team has more ice – creams is the winner
Trang 12For example: In Grade 7, Unit 12: Let’s eat - Lesson 3: B1: Our food, exercise
2 “Completing the story”
Ba went to the because he was The doctor Ba some questions Ba said he _some last night The doctor said he must _ the spinach _, _ can be dirty The dirt can people sick _ gave Ba some to make him feel better.
I show 10 numbers on the screen
Number 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10: contain one or some ice – creams
Number 2 contains two mice
Number 4 contains a mouse
Number 1 and 5 contain “The Sun”
My students play the game in two teams
I prepare the game for this exercise as following:
Step 1: Create a new slide to type the exercise with 10 blanks that need to be
filled in by students
Step 2: Create 10 Text boxes to type the target words that will be filled into
the blanks
Step 3: Add Effects to the target words by selecting menu Slide Show |
Custom Animation | Click Add Effect button | Entrance | (choose one Effect I like)
Step 4: Drag and drop the Text boxes with the target words into the correct
blanks in the exercise
Step 5: Insert a new slide (Click menu Insert | New Slide or press Ctrl + M) to
create 10 Text boxes to type 10 numbers (from 1 to 10)
Step 6: Insert an object into the slide of exercise Right click mouse on the
object | select Hyperlink (or press Ctrl + K) | Place in this document, select the slide of numbers (Note: You can see the content of the slide in the Slide preview panel)
Step 7: Insert 10 new slides:
Slide 1 Insert a picture of the Sun Slide 2 Insert a picture of a mouse Slide 3 Insert a picture of an ice - cream Slide 4 Insert a picture of two mice
Trang 13Slide 6 Insert a picture of two ice - creams Slide 7 Insert a picture of three ice - creams Slide 8 Insert a picture of an ice - cream Slide 9 Insert a picture of four ice - creams Slide 10 Insert a picture of two mice
Create a hyperlink between each slide of pictures and the slide of exercise
(see Step 6).
Step 8: In the slide of numbers, create a hyperlink between every numbers
and the correlative pictures (see Step 6) Next, make the numbers disappear after the appearance of the correlative pictures by Add Effect | Exit (choose one Effect
I like) At the Custom Animation panel, click on Effect combo box | Timing | Click on Triggers button | Start effect on click of: (select the text box that is being done)
Trang 142 “Typhoon”
This game is often used to check “answering the questions” exercises
I show some numbers which must be suitable with the amount of the questions on the screen
I have my students play the game in two teams, take turn to choose the numbers
+) Some numbers contain the questions that they have to answer If they answer correctly, they get one point for each question
+) Some numbers are lucky ones If they choose these numbers, they can get marks without doing something
+) Some numbers contain typhoons If they choose these numbers, they loose all the points that they have had
+) The winner is the team who has more points
For example:
In grade 8, Unit 5: Study habits, Lesson 1: Getting started – Listen and read, Exercise 3 (Page 47): “Answering the questions”, I have my students play the
game called “Typhoon” to check their answers.
The steps to prepare “Typhoon” game with MS PowerPoint are basically similar to how to prepare for “Magical ice - cream” game.
Step 1: On a new slide, create 10 Text boxes to type 10 numbers (from 1 to
10)
Step 2: Add Effects to the numbers
Step 3: Insert 5 new slides to type 5 questions and 5 answers 5 answers have
to be written in 5 text boxes and added effects
Step 4: Insert 2 other new slides:
Slide 1 A lucky number Slide 2 A picture of a typhoon
Step 5: Create hyperlinks between the numbers and the slides of the

Trang 183 “Kim’s game”
I show a picture on the screen for a few seconds I ask my students to work in groups, look at the picture, try to remember items in the picture then go to the board and write the words This game can be applied when teaching vocabulary, preposition of places or leading in the lessons, ect
For example, I use the following picture to teach the vocabulary of these items in the house
* Key words: Picture, books, lamp, table, couch, cushions, heater…
Trang 19IV Results
After applying MS PowerPoint to teaching sensitively, I have seen that my students are more and more interested in learning English Therefore, their studying results are better day by day
