Welcome to Petrel 2013.3
Petrel continuously promotes disciplines working together and, with this release, a significant new step is
introduced with the Dual Scale Modeling workflow spanning Geology and Reservoir Engineering Other
significant new features have been added in Geophysics, Production and Studio, along with performance and
stability improvements
The key new features in this release are:
Geophysics
• Surface attributes - resample option: Allows resampling of the input seismic trace prior to surface
attribute computation to address amplitude extractions in areas of dipping seismic reflectors
• Interval velocity maps: The Velocity Modeling process now allows creation of Interval velocity maps directly from the velocity model
Geology
• Well log calculator: The workflow for generating logs for bulk wells has been significantly improved
• Well tops attributes and editing: Improvements and fixes, including allowing deletion of well tops horizons
selected in a 3D window
• Log visualization: Significant performance improvements when working in 3D or Interpretation windows
Geology and Reservoir Engineering
• Dual scale reservoir modeling: This new reservoir model building workflow enables you to build linked
geological and simulation models that contain the structural resolution and geological property resolution
necessary to characterize the static and dynamic reservoir behavior It enables fast and accurate upscaling of
grid properties between the geological and simulation grids
Production
• OFM: OFM calculated fields can be imported and well mappings are preserved
Studio
• Web Map Gallery: Enables users to choose from a selection of pre-defined map-services
• Data Synchronization: Several enhancements have been added to the data synchronization workflow
Further information on the above mentioned improvements can be found in the following sections and in more
detail in the companion document, Petrel E&P Software Platform 2013 What’s New Complete documentation for
this release, and all prior Petrel releases, is available from the Schlumberger Information Solutions (SIS) Support
Portal
Trang 5Project Compatibility
The Petrel platform preserves the value of your historical data Projects saved in all earlier Petrel versions will load
directly into Petrel 2013 without any need for data migration However note that projects saved with Petrel 2013
will not be backwards compatible (e.g., cannot be opened) with earlier versions
Trang 6What’s New in Brief
The following content contains short descriptions of new features in this release, organized by domain The
companion document, Petrel E&P Software Platform 2013 What’s New, contains more detailed explanations,
descriptions of functionality, and workflows for these enhancements
Geophysics
Feature Short Description
Surface attributes: resample
option There is now an option to resample the input seismic trace prior to surface attribute computation to mitigate artifacts arising from the
discrete nature of seismic In this new release, this option is available for a few surface attributes
Interval velocity maps In the 2013.2 release, you could create Interval velocity maps for the
existing velocity model The 2013.3 release presents an additional option to create Interval velocity maps while you are running the Velocity Modeling process These output maps can be used for QC purposes
Keyboard shortcut key Shift + E The shortcut key Shift + E can be used to access the “Select a single
point” icon
Seismic volume rendering Ray casting technology is now used for volume rendering of seismic
cubes This enables rendering techniques like depth effect for crisper and more continuous amplitude visualization
Geobody interpretation Improved interactivity of the probe opacity manipulation
Volume attributes: Depth
conversion
Previously, assigning an Interval Velocity cube as an attribute created
a cube with “0” value result This has been fixed
Volume attributes: Consistent dip Previously, when input seismic is in depth domain, generating the
Consistent dip attribute produced random noise This has been fixed
Volume attributes: Favorites The issue to allow right-click on a seismic volume in the Favorites pane
to access the Volume attribute process has been fixed
Surface Attributes :
Non-overlapping surfaces Previously, generating an attribute surface between two input surfaces produced numbers with large values in areas where the two surfaces
do not overlap This has been fixed to produce an NaN (undefined) value
Seismic interpretation: Visualize
mode Seismic interpretation commands now remain enabled when Toggle visualization on plane mode (blue button) is activated
Seismic interpretation : Autotrack The dialog box display issue to support large fonts at 125 dpi Windows
setting has been fixed
Trang 7Feature Short Description
MultiZ interpretation • The Create triangle mesh (Meshing) process now releases the
memory it used for calculations
• In the 2013.2 release, MultiZ interpretation, in some circumstances, rendered slowly This has been fixed
• With the Structural and Fault analysis license enabled, MultiZ interpretation objects no longer have the Structural Analysis tab available
Mis-tie manager Inserting Mis-tie manager on a dataset with missing intersecting lines
no longer causes Petrel to crash
SEG-Y 2D Toolbox • The Shot point scalar now supports values up to 10,000
• The issue for numerical precision for scaled shot point numbers has been fixed
• The issue of coordinate support for measurements in arc seconds has been fixed
• The “Existing 2D lines” function now correctly supports imperial units
• The loading of traces with varying time-of-first-sample (TOFS) now activates sinc interpolation
SEG-Y to ZGY converter The issue where certain ZGY cubes were created with checker
board-like artifacts has been fixed
Seismic Well Tie Previously, when wavelets were created using the statistical
extraction method, the history was tagged incorrectly; it showed those wavelets as the extended white method This has been fixed
Geology & Reservoir Engineering
Feature Short Description
Dual scale reservoir modeling
workflow A new dual scale reservoir modeling methodology brings significant benefits for the Geologist and the Reservoir Engineer:
• Build a first model grid at the simulation grid resolution so that the geologist and reservoir engineers together identify the structural resolution necessary to capture the dynamic reservoir behavior
• Refine the grid, without changing the structure, in order to maximize the accuracy of well log upscaling and property population at the appropriate fine geological grid resolution
• Maintain explicit mapping between coarse and fine grid for fast accurate upscaling of grid properties
For additional details, please see “Modeling” in Petrel E&P Software Platform 2013 What’s New
Trang 8Modeling
Feature Short Description
Scale up well logs When running the scale up well log process, if the horizons of the 3D
grid were not perfectly tied to the well picks, there was no guarantee that the correct data was upscaled in each zone In the 2013.3 release,
a zone correction option has been added to ensure that the upscaled well data is correctly mapped to each zone
Geology
Feature Short Description
Backward compatible projects We have addressed a compatibility issue between 2013.2 and 2013.1,
that may have occurred when using Annotation Style Some projects saved in 2013.2 will not be able to be opened in 2013.1 Open these projects in 2013.3, save, and then open in 2013.1
Geology: Wells
Feature Short Description
Checkshot loader When importing checkshot data exported from GeoFrame, where the
file contains a header, units can now be reset and user-specified units can also be stored for use in the next import activity
Well log calculator There is now a seamless workflow when generating logs for bulk wells
with the calculator operations in Workflow editor, so that you no longer need to delete the logs prior to operation rerun The well log calculator no longer fails to overwrite existing logs
Well tops attributes When computing zone thickness by using a Boolean log filter in well
tops attributes, zero values are no longer produced if there are three rows in the spreadsheet In such cases, Petrel now correctly computes the first filter interval as well as the end of each interval
Well tops editing in 3D windows In edit mode, you can now delete well tops horizons selected in a 3D
window
Well section window display You can no longer create incomplete input data, which would
otherwise result in project corruption This fix will not correct an already corrupted project, but you can manually delete the incomplete point from the well trace spreadsheet, then save the project before visualizing in the Well section window
Transferring wells with RPT Petrel no longer crashes if you open and close RPT multiple times
when transferring wells across projects
Log visualization in 3D and
Interpretation windows There are no longer log visualization problems in the TWT domain when you work in 3D or Interpretation windows In prior releases, a
shift resulted from the use of only time samples from trajectory points
Now all time samples interpolating the trajectory at each sample are used to visualize in the TWT domain
Trang 9Well Section Window
Feature Short Description
Reference Project tool The transfer of Well section windows and cross section objects is now
possible using the Reference project tool for Petrel project versions 2013.1 and onwards You need to upgrade your projects to at least the 2013.1 version to use this feature
Plotting The SDI_Print failed error has been fixed when trying to plot a cross
section hardcopy
Well Tops Several use cases that caused well tops not to display in the cross
section have been fixed
Well Design
Feature Short Description
BHA display in Well section
window You can now hide a BHA display in the Well section window by clearing the depth settings for the BHA You can also display the BHA
as a depth line by setting the same start and end depths
Production
Feature Short Description
OFM - Importing from OFM OFM calculated fields can be imported
OFM - Petrel 2013.1 OFM Data
Connector Templates Well mappings are preserved when an OFM Data Connector template from a 2013.1 project is used in a 2013.2 project
Production Analytics - Split Sets Split sets can make the round trip from 2013.2 to 2013.1 and back to
2013.2

Trang 11Known Issues
The following content summarizes known issues and limitations for this release, grouped by domain
Structural Framework
Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
Volume Based Modeling (VBM)
Method
• Baselap-baselap relationship is not working as expected It is not possible to explicitly define truncation rules between
unconformities: the youngest unconformity is always assumed to
be truncating older unconformities
• The stair-step faulting process is disabled when using faults coming from a VBM model
• Eroded horizon surfaces coming from VBM models are not always handled properly in pillar gridding They may be extrapolated beyond erosion line
• Results are not fully reproducible, especially in areas where there
is no input data to control horizon extrapolation However, differences in volume are expected to be less than 1% in areas where data interpolation is properly constrained
• Zones could present visualization/rendering issues reflected as empty triangles in Interpretation window, Intersection planes and Intersection window
Geophysics
Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
Seismic Compression • Volume attributes generated from compressed cubes may display
cosmetic artifacts along its edges These edges are typically zones along boundaries of irregularly shaped surveys, muting zones at edges of surveys and zones above sea bottom which in the compressed cube borders consecutive neighboring samples with zero values
WORKAROUND: These cosmetic artifacts can be cropped from view Alternatively crop the compressed cube prior to generating volume attributes
For compressed cubes intended for more permanent storage, we recommend to (re)generate these using the next release of seismic compression process
• Velocity cubes and other non-zero mean (e.g., positive only
values) data types should be compressed with a high (enough) value SQNR to maintain adequate signal quality
