or Application Software release notes documents specify that mini-application and/or boot software update is mandatory.

When upgrading both the application software and the mini-application software in 8602 Smart Router and 8609 Smart Router it is recommended that the application software is upgraded first.

For all the CDC2-B control cards delivered before FP4.1 SP1, CDC2 boot software GMZ2743 version 1.20.0 or higher needs to be updated before upgrading the application ESW to FP4.1 SP1.

Check the current boot SW version in slot 1 and 14 E.g.:

The main functionality of the mini-application is to download the new application software tothe network element

Update the boot and mini-application software only if the Boot and Mini-Applications Software

or Application Software release notes documents specify that mini-application and/or boot software update is mandatory.

To upgrade the boot and mini-application software with CLI follow these instructions:

Step 1 Clear flash space by removing the unused application softwares from flash

router# delete slot * flash: *

Trang 24

2 Installation Notes

Step 2 Download the boot and mini-application package (e.g pkg_boot_8660_2.11.156) to the following

folders in the NE

• 8602 Smart Router, 8605 Smart Router, 8607 Smart Router, 8609 Smart Router and 8620Smart Router: Application SW directory:

/flash/appl-sw

• In 8611 Smart Router check that SCM in slot 2 is the active SCM:

router# show protection unit scm

If needed use the following command to switch SCM activity:

router# protection manual-switchover unit scm slot 2Download software package to the directory /flash/appl-sw/slot2

• In 8615 Smart Router download software package to slot 14: sw/slot14

/flash/appl-• In 8660 Smart Router and 8630 Smart Router check the slot number of the passive CDC:router# show protection unit CDC

Download software package to the slot number of the passive CDC:

/flash/appl-sw/slot14or /flash/appl-sw/slot1

• 8665 Smart Router download software package to the CU in logical slot 14 (by default, useslot 14 for downloading the package, but note

that any other slot folder can be used): /flash/appl-sw/slot14

• The mode must be bin (i.e downloading a binary file)

• The transfer will fail if the file system is full, if the SW directory quota is all used or if thenumber of files in the SW directory has reached its maximum (10)

• pkg_boot_8602_<sw version> is for 8602 Smart Router

• pkg_boot_8620_<sw version> is for 8620 Smart Router

• pkg_boot_8607_<sw version> is for 8607 Smart Router

• pkg_boot_8605_<sw version> is for 8605 Smart Router

• pkg_boot_8609_<sw version> is for 8609 Smart Router

• pkg_boot_8611_<sw version> is for 8611 Smart Router

• pkg_boot_8615_<sw version> is for 8615 Smart Router

• For 8630 Smart Router and 8660 Smart Router:

• pkg_boot_8660_<sw version> for upgrading boot and mini-application of all CDC1and IFC1 cards in the NE

• pkg_boot_cdc2_<sw version> for upgrading boot and mini-application of all CDC2cards in the NE

• pkg_boot_ifc2_<sw version> for upgrading boot and mini-application of all IFC2cards in the NE

• pkg_boot_elc1_<sw version> for upgrading boot and mini-application of all ELC1cards in the NE

• For 8665 Smart Router :

• pkg_boot_86x5_<sw version> for 8665 Smart Router

Step 3 Update the boot and mini-application package to the NE with the following CLI command:

router(config)# boot system slot <slot#> flash: <pkg_name>

24

Trang 25

2 Installation Notes

Step 4 Wait until the CLI command has been completed successfully

Do not switch the power off during the operation as it may cause a situation in which there is

no valid boot software at all.

Step 5 Check that the new boot software and mini-application software exist in all cards:

router# show sw-version

In case upgrade has failed for some reason, do not reset cards but try upgrading again

Reload-sw is not needed after boot and mini-application update.

Each 8600 card has normally three kinds of embedded software: Boot ESW, Mini-Application ESWand Application ESW Normally the boot ESW always starts the last activated application ESW, but

if no proper application can be found or the application has been detected instable due to too manyuncontrolled resets, the mini-application ESW is activated and started automatically

If mini-application is the active ESW, the card is not able to provide normal network services

If the active control unit is running mini-application, then the whole NE is not able to providenormal network services Active control unit here means 8602 Smart Router, 8605 Smart Router,

8607 Smart Router, 8609 Smart Router, 8620 Smart Router, active SCM in 8611 Smart Router, active CU in 8615 Smart Router and 8665 Smart Router and active CDC in 8630 Smart Router and

8660 Smart Router

Trang 26

2 Installation Notes

By normal network services it is meant that the full functionality is in normal use In 8615 SmartRouter and 8665 Smart Router the mini-application ESW can support the full set of functions thatare needed for setting up the network element to normal functionality However, a complicatedconfiguration may cause the network element to be unstable, which should be avoided by all means, because mini-application will get into a booting loop, until finally the automatic configuration scriptloading is prevented and mini-application is started with no configuration

In case of protected control unit, that is, CDC 1+1, SCM 1+1 or CU1+1 (in 8615 Smart Routerstacked and 8665 Smart Router), the control unit running mini-application is never selected as activecontrol unit, if its protection pair is running the application ESW and it is part of the hw inventory. When the mini-application is the active ESW, the non-volatile configuration is still preserved in theflash, but it is not used as the running configuration After mini-application boot, the card is runningwith a “clean” (default) configuration; it can be configured but the configuration is not saved in thenon-volatile memory: the previous configuration is preserved unless a specific command is used toclean the non-volatile memory Exception to the rule is active ESW used in the next boot

When mini-application is the active ESW, its only function is to provide the following basic services:

• Deleting application ESWs from flash

• Downloading application ESWs or patches to flash

• Activating and reloading application ESW

• In case of active control unit: through console connection configuring management interface forusing FTP and Telnet to the NE

• In 8615 Smart Router and 8665 Smart Router:

• Loading automatic CLI configuration script

For recovering from mini-application you should first select the strategy, which fits best thesituation The instability of the previously active application ESW is caused by an internal orexternal defect source

If the defect source can be removed, you can just activate the previous application ESW againand continue using configurations which were saved in the non-volatile memory before themini-application was activated

If the defect source cannot be removed, the possible strategies are:

• Activate a new ESW version with a fix to the problem which caused the card to activate themini-application Card or NE starts automatically using configurations which were saved in thenon-volatile memory before the mini-application activated

• Activate the previously active ESW with clean configuration Restore the configuration which isknown to be stable You need the configuration snapshot file which was created with the stableconfiguration

• Activate the previous ESW with clean configuration and reconfigure the NE

In the following chapters you can find instructions to procedures needed to carry out the selectedstrategy

2.4.1 Mini-Application Recovery Functionality in 8615 Smart Router

The functionality described in this chapter is not supported in 8615 Smart Router stacked.

If the mini-application is activated due to uncontrolled resets, the NE will try to perform automaticrecovery according to a pre-defined plan Automatic recovery means that the previous applicationESW with the previous configuration will be activated If the uncontrolled resets are caused by

a temporary external defect source, this mechanism helps the NE to return to normal operationautomatically when the external defect source disappears

The mini-application is activated automatically by the NE, if five uncontrolled resets happenand the time between them less than 1 hour The first auto recovery attempt happens after themini-application has been running for 10 minutes If the application fails to operate successfullyafter recovery, that is, an uncontrolled resets happen again, the second auto recovery attempt is madeafter mini-application has been running for 20 minutes The time between each recovery attempts isdoubled, i.e., 40, 80, 160 minutes and so forth After 8 attempts the 24 hour limit is reached andrecovery will be attempted once every 24 hours

If the application ESW runs successfully about 1 hour after auto recovery, the application ESW ismarked stable and auto recovery timer is set back to the initial value of 10 minutes

If the NE reset happens while the mini-application is active, the automatic recovery functionality is halted.

Mini-application auto recovery does not require any activation The user can halt the auto recoveryfunctionality by reloading the NE while mini-application is active by using the ‘reload-sw’ CLIcommand

2.4.2 Mini-Application Configuration With CLI Script in 8615 Smart Router and

8665 Smart Router

The functionality described in this chapter is supported in 8615 Smart Router and 8665 Smart Router.Mini-application CLI configuration script can be used to enable management connection whilethe NE is running mini-application To ensure stable operation during a problem situation thescript should be as simple as possible In most cases it is enough to configure one interface formanagement connection and enable telnet, SSH or INM connection to the NE Here is an example

of a simple CLI configuration script file:

enableconfigure terminalhostname 8615-NEinterface ge13/1/16

ip address 172.19.102.155/24

no shutdown

!ftp-server enablebmp-server enablecli-server telnet enable

Trang 28

2 Installation Notes

ip route 0.0.0.0/0 172.19.102.254

!Follow these steps to activate the mini-application configuration:

Step 1 Transfer the CLI script file using FTP to the NE directory /flash/cli-script/

Step 2 Activate the CLI script

router# activate mini-application-cli-script <script-file-name>

Note that the activation will not check whether the script has legal contents (CLI syntax, functionality, etc), the user must make sure that he/she is using valid CLI commands

During activation the script file is copied from the directory /flash/cli-script/ to the non-volatilememory and it can be removed after activation The configuration script will remain in thenon-volatile memory until it is deactivated with the following command:

router# no activate mini-application-cli-script

The script functionality can be tested after activation using the following steps Note that connection

to the console port of the NE is needed

Step 1 Using FTP delete the previous log file, if it exists

/flash/cli-script/auto_config_log

Step 2 Activate the mini-application SW in all units

router(config)# boot system whole-ne mini-application

Step 3 Reload the NE

router# reload-sw

Step 4 Follow the console during NE boot and press "m" key immediately when you see the text:

Press 'm' to activate miniapplication

Step 5 The NE resets again and boots up with mini-application active using the empty default configuration

in the RAM file system The configuration of the application ESW remains untouched in thenon-volatile memory Wait a few minutes after all the units have reached the "up and running" stateand the configuration script has been executed

Step 6 Test that the configuration is working as expected You can check the script execution results

by downloading the ASCII log file with FTP:

'/cli/pub-After testing, activate the previous applications to all unit slots:

router(config)# boot system slot 14 flash: <application-name>

router(config)# boot system slot 13 flash: <application-name> reload

2.4.3 Active Control Unit or NE in Mini-Application

Active control unit means 8602 Smart Router, 8605 Smart Router, 8607 Smart Router, 8609 SmartRouter, 8620 Smart Router, active SCM in 8611 Smart Router, active CU in 8615 Smart Routerand active CDC in 8630 Smart Router and 8660 Smart Router

Minimum Configuration in Mini-Application for FTP Use

If you need to access NE with FTP, e.g for downloading new application ESW, you need toconfigure the management interface and enable FTP transfer 8611 Smart Router, 8620 SmartRouter, 8630 Smart Router and 8660 Smart Router use management Fast Ethernet (MFE) interfacefor FTP transfer In the case of 8602 Smart Router, 8605 Smart Router, 8607 Smart Router and

8615 Smart Router the fast Ethernet port is used and 8609 Smart Router must use the fixed10BASE-T/100BASE-TX/1000BASE-T electrical ports

8615 Smart Router and 8665 Smart Router create the inventory automatically and activate theconfiguration script, if this function is enabled If the configuration script is not activated, thenetwork element has to be configured manually

Here are example configurations:

Step 1 Optional step Reduce the number of messages in terminal:

router# no terminal monitor

Step 2 router# configure terminal

Trang 30

8665 Smart Router:

router(config)# interface xe13/2/0router(cfg-if[ge2/0])# no shutdownrouter(cfg-if[ge2/0])# ip address 172.19.102.155/24

Step 4 Optional step Configure management IP route if needed.

router(config)# ip route 0.0.0.0/0 172.19.102.254

Step 5 router(config)# ftp-server enable

Step 6 Use FTP to download the application ESW to the NE

Remember that mini-application does not save configurations to non-volatile memory!

Activating Previous Application ESW Version and Continue Using Previous Configurations Step 1 Activate the previous application ESW without the reload option If needed, repeat the command for

each slot:

router(config)# boot system slot <slot#> flash: <sw-name>

Step 2 Finally reset the NE:

router# reload-swAfter that the NE boots up using the configurations in the non-volatile memory

Activating New Application ESW Version and Continue Using Previous Configurations

Step 1 Configure management interface according to chapterMinimum Configuration in Mini-Application

for FTP Use

Step 2 Download new ESW (for 8611 Smart Router, 8615 Smart Router, 8620 Smart Router, 8630 Smart

Router and 8660 Smart Router use ESW package file)

Step 3 Activate new ESW and reload NE:

router(config)# boot system slot <slot#> flash: <sw-name>reload

Activating Previous Application ESW with Clean (Default) Configuration

Step 1 Activate previous ESW without reload option If needed, repeat the command for each slot:

router(config)# boot system slot <slot#> flash: <sw-name>

Step 2 Reset NE with clean (default) configuration Depending on the mini-application version the

command is:

router# tmp-reset-from-scratchor

router# debug sw tmp-reset-from-scratch

Step 3 After the NE has booted up check that all cards are responding and running the correct ESW version:

router# show sw-version | include OK

Step 4 The options are:

• Restore previous stable configuration snapshot, if available

2.4.4 Line Card (IFC/ELC1), Line Unit (LU1), Traffic Functionality (LU) or Passive

CU/CDC/SCM in Mini-Application

The situation is very much the same as in the case explained in chapter2.4.3 Active Control Unit or

NE in Mini-Application, but the rules regarding the non-volatile memory concern only the card(or functionality in the case of LU in 8615 Smart Router and CU) running mini-application Thecard does not get the start permission from the hw-inventory and it cannot be configured withfew exceptions:

• Application ESW can be activated

• The card can be removed from the hw-inventory (in most cases)

The rest of the cards in the NE behave normally: configurations can be done and they are saved

to the non-volatile memory

Activating Previous Application ESW Version and Continue Using Previous Configurations

Activate previous application ESW if the defect source which caused mini-application activationhas been removed Remove the defect source first and activate the previous application ESW:router(config)# boot system slot <slot#> flash: <sw-name>reload

Activating New Application ESW Version and Continue Using Previous Configurations

Download and activate a new fixed application ESW

Step 1 Download a new ESW package to the NE

Step 2 Activate a new ESW package and reload the NE:

router(config)# boot system slot <slot#> flash: <pkg-name>

Step 3 Reload all cards at once:

router# reload-swor

Reload the cards one by one using the same strategy as described in document 8600 Smart Router

Embedded Software Release Notes, chapter 'Non-Service Affecting Software Upgrade'.

In short, the boot order of the slots is: CDC-14, CDC-1, working side line cards, protecting linecards, the rest of line cards However, if CDC-1 is passive and running the mini-application, it isrecommended to reload all cards at once

Activating Previous Application ESW with Clean (Default) Configuration

This step is possible only if the faulty line card can be removed from the hw-inventory This mightnot always be possible, e.g when the card is on the working side of an interface protection group

Step 1 Remove the faulty line card from the hw-inventory:

router# hw-inventory slot <slot#> remove unit

32

Trang 33

2 Installation Notes

Step 2 Download and activate the application ESW:

router(config)# boot system slot <slot#> flash: <sw-name>reload

Step 3 Add a card to the inventory with clean configurations:

router# hw-inventory slot <slot#> add unit clean-start[etsi|ansi]

Wait until slot <slot#> has reached the “UP AND RUNNING” state before continuing with theconfiguration:

router# show hw-inventory | include slotunit in slot 6 is part of inventory and UP AND RUNNING
