III Read the passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the following questions

Compact discs (CD’s) have revolutionized the music industry with their surprisingly realistic sound The six-inch discs look like thin, plastic sandwiches with aluminum in the center They have digitally recorded material that is read by laser beams, so the sound has none of the cracking sound of vinyl records

CD’s are also virtually indestructible, and they are lighter and smaller conventional records ( LP’s : Long playing ) CD’s are becoming more widely available than LP’s ; they are sold in electronics and video stores that haven’t formerly carried records or cassettes Many record stores are now cutting their prices on LP’s to make room for the new CD’s

There has been a phenomenal growth in the sale of CD’s Sales were up almost 150 percent in the first half of 1986 as compared to the first half of 1985 Although fewer than million CD’s were sold in the U.S in 1984, there were approximately 50 million sold in 1986 It is likely that the sales would have been even higher were it not for the price CD’s cost nearly twice as much as LP’s In the near future, however, prices should lower as more production facilities open

C Stores are selling more CD’s than LP’s D Stores are losing money on their LP’s 35 (A) (B) (C) (D)

36 The author’s main purpose is to

A tell how CD’s are made B discuss the growth of CD’s

37 The author compares compact discs with sandwiches because

Although most universities in the United States are on semester system, which offers classes in the fall and spring, some schools observe a quarter system comprised of fall, winter, spring and summer quarter The academic year, September

to June, is divided into three quarters of eleven weeks each, beginning in September, January, and March ; the summer quarter, June to August, is composed of shorter sessions of varying length

There are several advantages and disadvantages to the quarter system On the plus side, students who wish to

complete three degrees in less than the customary four years may take advantage of the opportunity to study year round by

enrolling in all four quarters In addition, although most students begin their programs in the fall quarter, they may enter at the beginning of any of the other quarters Finally, since the physical facilities are kept in operation year round, the resources are used efficiently to serve the greatest number of students But there are several disadvantages as well Many

faculty complain that the eleven-week term is simply not long enough for them to cover the material required by most

college courses Students also find it difficult to complete the assignments in such a short period of time

In order to combine the advantages of the quarter system with those of the semester system, some colleges and

universities have instituted a three-term trimester system In fourteen weeks, faculty and students have more time to cover

material and finish course requirements, but the additional term provides more options for admission during the year and accelerates the degree programs for those students who wish to graduate early
