English, the International Language
More than 6,000 languages are spoken in the world today More than 400 million people speak English as their first, or native, language Yet there are now even more speakers of English as a second language than there are speakers of English as
a first language! The number of people who speak English is growing quickly Because of the huge population of China – more than one billion people – Chinese is the only language with more speakers than English
English is the native or official language of one–fifth of the land area of the world It is spoken in Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United States It is also one of the official languages in India
More people study English than any other language In many countries, the textbooks in universities are in English Furthermore, many university classes are taught in English even though English is not the native language of the students
English is the language of international communication It is the language of international business, research, and science More than three–fourths of the world’s mail is written in English Three–fifths of the world’s radio stations use English More than half of the world’s scientific and research journals are in English Most other languages have borrowed many English words
Is English a good international language? It is probably the world’s largest language with more than one million words! The grammar is simpler than in the other major languages However, English spelling is difficult, especially for nonnative speakers of English The major reason that spelling in English is diffcult is that Modern English spelling represents Old English pronunciation The English we use today is written almost the same as it was hundreds and hundreds of years ago, but the way people pronounce the words has changed a lot Therefore, many words in English are not pronounced the way they are spelled
People have often tried to create new languages for communication Hundreds
of artificial languages have been invented since 1880 Esperanto is the most well– known of these “universal languages” No one speaks these languages as a native language People try to use them to communicate in the world However, none of them has ever become very popular English is the only true international language

Reading 2 (1m)
Read the following passage about the invention of a new kind of armchairs
Write true (T) or (F) for each of the sentences below, according to the information
given If the information is not given, put a question mark (?) in the gap.
A lot of people like to play their records as loudly as possible. The result is that the rest of the family, and the neighbours often complain if they don’t like the music One answer to this problem is to wear headphones, but headphones are usually uncomfortable
An armchair which has a record-player system built into it has just been designed by a British engineer, Stephen Court
The armchair looks like an ordinary armchair with a high back However, each of the two sides of the chair has three loudspeakers inside to reproduce middle and high sounds Low sounds are reproduced by a pair of loudspeakers in a hollow space under the seat Anyone who sits in the chair hears sounds coming from all around his/ her head
Because we cannot tell the exact source from which low sounds come, it doesn’t matter that they come from underneath or behind It is the sides of the chair that create
a stereo effect
These sounds only travel a few inches to reach the listener’s ears Consequently, it takes only a little power to make the music sound very loud Only a small amount of sound leaks out from behind the chair into the room to disturb others Most of the sound is absorbed by the listener
Trang 4True (T), false (F) or no information (?) 1_T Stephen Court has just invented an armchair which can play music
2. The armchair has very comfortable headphones attached to it
3. The armchair is like an ordinary armchair but it contains speakers in both its sides underneath the part where someone sits
4. Most people nowadays prefer listening to sound which comes from more than one speaker even if the quality is not too good
5. Most people can tell exactly the direction from which low sounds are coming
6. People sitting in chairs near the armchair will not be able to hear most of the sound
