The DET is a computer adaptive test, which means that the order and difficulty of the
questions vary for each test-taker The difficulty of the questions on the Duolingo English Testadjusts dynamically as the test progresses As a result, some questions may appear easier ormore difficult than others This is a normal aspect of adaptive testing
There are 13 question types on the Duolingo English Test, and you will encounter each type
throughout the test
Question Types
www.detready.com
Trang 7Certain question types on the DET have definite 'correct' or 'incorrect' answers (see the tablebelow) However, the scoring system isn't all or nothing – if your answer is partially right, you'llstill gain some points Therefore, it's crucial that you attempt every question, even if you'reuncertain about the correct answer.
DET Ready - Guidebook
the correctness of your grammar (grammatical accuracy)
the variety and level of your grammar (grammatical complexity)
the level of vocabulary used (lexical sophistication)
the variety of word choice (lexical diversity)
how well you answer the question that was asked (task relevance)
how much you can say or write in a limited time (fluency)
the pronunciation and pace of your speech (acoustic features; this one is for speaking questions only)
Unlike the question types in the table above, The 'open-response' speaking and writing questions
do not have a 'correct' or 'incorrect' answer (see the table below) Instead, they grade yourability to share your thoughts on a topic through speaking and writing Your answers aregraded on the following criteria
All of the following question types contribute to your Production Subscore

Trang 26Success Tips
Tip 1: Be aware of connected speech
While the speakers on the DET will likely speak very clearly with limited connected speech, it isstill important to be aware of the features of connected speech Some examples of connectedspeech to be aware of are:
1 Assimilation
Assimilation is a process where two sounds blend together to form a new sound It often
happens when two similar sounds are next to each other, like /t/ and /j/ which become /ʧ/ and/d/ and /j/ which become /ʤ/
phrase Pronunciation
don't you donʧu
won't you wonʧu
"this orange" = thisorange "this afternoon" = thisafternoon
"for example" = forexample "right away" = rightaway
4 Weak forms
Weak forms are when a sound or syllable is spoken with less stress or volume than the usualpronunciation This often happens with "grammar words", like articles, prepositions, or wordslike as, of, than, etc
For example, when "the" is used in the phrase "the end" it's often pronounced as a weak form, like "thuh" Another example is when the word "of" is used at the end of a sentence, it's oftenpronounced as "uhv"
Tip 2: Increase your typing speed
Since you only have 1 minute to complete this take, being a fast typer would be very helpful Irecommend spending time before you take the DET to develop your typing speed One greatfree website to practice typing is 10FastFingers

Use a pronunciation dictionary: Use online pronunciation dictionaries to hear the word
pronounced and see the phonetic spelling I recommend using the Oxford Learners
Dictionary and our DET Practice Platform
Repeat the word: Repeat the word several times to practice the correct pronunciation Use the word in context: Try to use the word in a sentence to help you understand how it
is used and pronounced in context
Tip 1: Learn the pronunciation of words
The majority of English language learners learn new words through reading, but it's also
important to learn how to pronounce these words Here are some tips for learning to
pronounce new words
1
2
3
Practice and repetition are key to improving your pronunciation
The same letter can make different sounds in different words For example: The "c" in "cat"
sounds different from the "c" in "city."
Some groups of letters can be hard to say correctly For example: The "ough" in "through"
sounds different from the "ough" in "though."
Many English words have unique spellings that don't follow the usual rules These words
need to be remembered individually For example: The word "knight" is pronounced like "nite,"
even though the spelling suggests otherwise.
Tip 2: Become familiar with words pronounced differently from their spelling
English pronunciation can be a challenge because:
Trang 34To determine the ideal pace for you, it is recommended to experiment with speaking at variousspeeds, such as slow, fast, and faster, and then evaluate the recordings to determine whichpace works best for you It is essential to consider this before any important examination orpresentation.

One crucial aspect of effective speaking is the ability to stress (emphasize) certain words inorder to convey important information We put stress on content words–words that carrysignificant meaning We don't tend to stress function (grammar) words like and, but, would, in,etc

Tip 1: Read the situation carefully
Understand the conversation's context to eliminate unrelated answers For example, if theconversation is about a science project, you can rule out answer choices related to art or sports
Tip 2: Notice speaker relationships:
Conversations with students are casual, while talks with professors are more formal Listen fortone, language, and formality to identify the relationship For example, if the speaker addressesthe other person by their first name, they might be fellow students
Tip 3: Find synonyms:
Speakers often use synonyms instead of the exact words from the question For example, if the
question is about "job satisfaction" the speaker might use the phrase "contentment in their
profession" instead See another example below from the DET study guide, "developing
relationships" and "networking" Be alert for words that have similar meanings
