LESSON 14
COMPLETING CHARTS
Complete-the-chart questions require an understanding of all or a major part of a lecture (Chart questions will not be asked about conversations.)
The chart consists of a grid There are actually several types of grids One type lists steps in a process You have to decide if the steps in the grid are actually given
in the lecture and then mark each step “Yes” or “No.” Another type of grid lists spe- cific characteristics You have to decide if these characteristics are associated with a certain idea or some general concept, and indicate whether this information was included in the lecture by placing check marks in the appropriate boxes
Your notes can be very helpful when you answer complete-the-chart questions
During the lecture, listen for the speaker to mention steps in a process or charac- teristics related to a topic, and then write them down

Cases are real business sits: 10-20 pp of text describing a prob
+.5-10 pp exhibits”
(Exhib = statistic info: spreadshts, etc.)
1, Analyze prob and data (get more if needed)
2 Make decisions about data
3 Usu involves role-play (e.g., roleplay CEO, CFO)
4 Work in grps (4-5 Stu): builds teamwork
5 Give presentation/write report (group grade based on this)
O Not all classes use cases; some lectures, some combin lect + cases Some
use computer simulations (e.g World Mktplace)
Sample Question:
In this lecture, the professor describes the process of the case study method
Indicate whether each of the following is a step in the process
Py

{) Te
Tae
Analyze the business situation and exhibits
Role-play
Run a computer simulation
Give a presentation and write a report
As you can see from the sample notes, the professor did mention the need to analyze the business problem and the data provided in the exhibits You should therefore check Yes for the first step The professor said that “solving the problem usually involves role-playing,” so you should also click on Yes for the second step in the list The professor said that some business classes involve computer simula- tions, but he was not talking about classes based on case study, so you should click
on No for the third step The professor said that a group grade was given for an oral presentation and a written report, so the fourth step should be marked Yes There
is no mention in the discussion that visiting a real business and attending a meet- ing was part of the case study process, so you should click No for the fifth step
Trang 8Lesson 14: Completing Charts 359
You will probably see one or two complete-the-chart questions in each
Listening section
EXERCISE 14.1
Focus: Answering complete-the-chart questions about lectures and academic
discussions
DIRECTIONS: Listen to the lectures and discussions and the questions about them
Then complete the chart by placing check marks (/) in the appropriate boxes You
may take notes on the lectures in the space allowed in the book or on another sheet
of paper As you take notes, try to decide what complete-the-chart questions might
be asked You may use your notes to help you answer the questions
Note: You will not see more than one complete-the-chart question per lecture on actual
tests However, some of the lectures in this text feature more than one to give you
more practice answering this type of question
