CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION

Part-time employment after hours by university students, both domestic and foreign, has become a typical occurrence in recent years The press, agencies, and companieswith an interest in it are drawn to this hot phenomenon Students who work part-timeare becoming more prevalent every day As is commonplace, part-time employmenthas an impact on academic performance for NTT University students as well Somestudents engage in paid part-time work For example, they work as salespeople, officeworkers, marketers, and receptionists, and help with family businesses (Billet &Ovens, 2007)

There are some reports that health is affected by part-time work and working hourslonger than prescribed According to the New Zealand Government, it issued therelevant decree to impose restrictions on the working hours of students Internationalstudents are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week under current standards.Similarly, there is a report by the Head of College and University Counseling(Association of College and University Counseling, 1999) that some students takingpart-time jobs to increase income can lead to psychological disorders

This is extremely serious because many students today intend to get a part-time job.The result of studying is a competition between those who work part-time and thosewho focus solely on studying Students working part-time are limited in terms of timewhen studying while working, so they will spend less time studying, so the learningefficiency will be reduced Additionally, it's likely that part-timers won't be able tocomplete their degrees on time, creating a variety of challenging circumstances like

Trang 7

pressure from the classroom, the family, the workplace, and many other issues.Regarding the effect of part-time employment on students' academic achievement, there are two schools of thought While one group of researchers asserts that givingstudents job experience and practical skills at work is beneficial, another groupbelieves that spending too much time at work distracts students from their studies, contributing to poor academic performance in school.

The temporal balance between work and study will determine if part-time work has afavorable or negative effect on a student's academic achievement This articleexamines how part-time employment affects university students' academicperformance, with a special emphasis on undergraduates at NTT University Thestudy aims to investigate and analyze the effects of working part-time jobs for NTTUniversity students in order to convince NTT University to grant scholarships to NTTUniversity disciples who have had difficult circumstances but have achieved manyachievements

What effects do part-time jobs have on students' performance?

The research is mainly aimed at critical data as well as perceptions that part-time jobscan cause a host of other social complications This study provides a specific view ofthe issue and provides a summary of the information discussed in this project, therebyhelping students to balance study and work through the management of time

CHAPTER 2 LITERATURE REVIEW

Trang 8

2.1 Theoretical Framework

Part-time employment, as defined by the International Labor Organization in (2003),

is defined as having fewer hours worked per week than full-time employment If aworker regularly works less than 30 or 35 hours per week, they are considered part-time

There are differences in working hours between nations when it comes to the duration

of part-time employment Part-time employees in Australia in (2007) were those whoworked fewer hours than their full-time counterparts within a certain industry, and themajority of the time worked was less than 32 hours per week

In Canada (2007), the definition of a part-time employee is one who typically worksless than 30 hours per week at their primary or only employment Nearly the same, working part-time is defined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics as working between 1and 34 hours per week In contrast to full-time workers, part-time workers might not

be entitled to the same benefits For instance, part-time employees are not entitled toemployee benefits, such as health insurance, in the United States as of (2009) Fromthe definitions given above, it can be inferred that a student who works a part-time jobthroughout a semester and puts in fewer than 20 hours a week can be considered astudent who is employed Even if the number of working hours varies, it is typical forstudents to work full-time during the semester break

2.2 Literature Review

"Lifestyle and the knowledge of working are two of the greatest aspects students must acquire to participate in part-time jobs" (Carney, Mcneish, & McColl, 2005; Oi I & Morison, 2007)

Trang 9

According to some national councils, part-time jobs probably have positive effects(National Commission on Youth, 1980) The sooner students approach the jobs, themore experience they have; they easily get used to working when they graduate byknowing their working habits Several studies suggest that interpersonal studentrelationships at work are the building blocks of relationships for working students(Greenberger, Steinberg, & Ruggiero, 1982) A good workplace, as well as high-quality work, gives students interesting and positive experiences This can helpstudents develop close relationships with colleagues (Mortimer & Shanahan, 1991).Indeed, it is not surprising that pupils that produce quality work experiences dispatchthat a source of satisfaction is the workplace (Ford & Bosworth, 1995)

In Western societies, it has been demonstrated that part-time employment has effects

on student learning outcomes, but very few studies have been done on the impact ofpart-time employment on student social life In most previous studies, studentemployment was viewed as a life experience (Ford & Bosworth, 1995) In addition, most students work part-time because their families are unable to provide theiryoungsters financially (Curtis, 2007; Callender, 2008) In 2006, Humphrey said thatone of the main factors that determines whether students choose part-timeemployment in Western cultures is the availability of family financial aid The 2003white paper, The Future of Higher Education, observed that they know that students'lifestyle choices affect how much they spend, and we think it makes sense for students

to work to pay for their expenses [2.2.6] Some UK and US studies inform us of theconsequences of part-time jobs, which can affect a student’s performance badly

Trang 10

According to UK studies, students are more likely to be absent from class and spendmost of their time working (Smith & Taylor, 1999) In addition, students are lesslikely to participate in additional activities such as volunteering, sports, art, etc.(D'Amico, 1984; Taylor & Smith, 1998; Warren, 2002) With all of those potentialaffections, students might miss their chance to experience those fascinating activities, which teach tons of helpful soft skills (Hope, 1990) It is hard for them to concentrate

on the lesson due to exhaustion (Pickering & Watts, 2000), all of which have thepotential to affect students’ performance The majority of studies indicate thatworking more than 15 hours a week as a secondary student hurts scholastic attainment(Stern, 1997) Such students perform worse academically, complete fewerassignments, are more likely to leave school early, and are less likely to enroll in apost-secondary program Students who work fewer hours experience a number ofdetrimental effects A 1995 study from Toronto found that students who workedThese results are supported by the fact that those who worked more than 20 hours had

a 16% dropout rate, and those who worked more than 20 hours had a 33% dropoutrate Singh (1998) discovered that in a study that took socioeconomic background andpast achievement into consideration, the more hours worked, the bigger the negativeconsequences for student progress Younger pupils who labor longer hours may havemore severe impacts than older students (Barone, 1993) The responsibilities of bothemployment and school can be difficult to balance for many kids (Worley, 1995)

An increase in the number of hours worked has been cited as one of the mostinfluential elements in several studies showing that employment has a detrimentalimpact on student's academic progress (Watanabe, 2005)

Trang 11

Furr and Elling (2000) found the academic success and advancement of 29% ofstudents who worked 30-39 hours per week and 39% of those students who workedfull time The prevailing belief in society is that due to the time and effort spent atwork, students will be distracted from their studies, ultimately leading to lowGPAs.The majority of research has come to the conclusion that this is only true when

a student works more than 20 hours per week

Both Marx and Dundes (2006) and the National Center for Education Statistics(NCES) (1994), which is run by the U.S Department of Education, have producednoteworthy findings According to NCES research, students who work 1 to 15 hoursper week have much higher GPAs than students who work 16 hours or more or do notwork at all The NCES is the principal federal agency for gathering and evaluatingeducational data Have a closer look According to Ha, C N., Thanh, N T., and Son,

T D (2016), most Vietnamese students use their time as an advantage since they havetons of spare time

Trang 12

acceptability, quantitative research is more beneficial than qualitative research As aresult, this study employed a quantitative research approach Data from thequantitative research were analyzed using the descriptive approach.

3.2 Research Instrument

Data from the research participants were gathered using a closed-ended surveyquestionnaire The survey was developed from Robinson (1999) and Wantanabe(2005), two previous investigations. In order to gather information for theirinvestigation, the researchers used a survey questionnaire The purpose of thequestionnaire is primarily to collect data from the respondents Even if the researcher

Trang 13

is not there to personally receive their responses, it is an appropriately low-cost,explosive, and effective technique to gather vast volumes of data The questionnairewas going to be used by the author of this study to gather quantitative data The firstpart of servey want to know about personal information of the respondents Thecontext of the respondents' personal data was explored by questions such as genderand grade THe second part of servey aim to answer questions about their part - timejob do in the past, time working within a week, work overtime, the reason want or donot want to do part - time job and academic results for semester 1 and semester 2( 2012-2022 ).

3.3 Procedure

On Monday, April 15, 2023, at 23:00, each researcher in the study team was in charge

of composing the outcome statement The survey has 10 questions and should takeabout 3-5 minutes to complete We will use the study data for scholarly reasons andalso keep participants replies private and confidential The researchers took threeweeks to finish the survey, and then they meticulously transcribed each participant'sresponses Charts and tables will be utilized for demonstrating the outcome

Participation in the series of sketching exercises is anticipated to be optional.Allparticipants will be given the assurance that their names and emails will not be shared

in order to maintain confidentiality The interviewee's name will be modified and theirlast name omitted from the text

CHAPTER 4 RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

4.1 Data Analysis

According to the following characteristics: Demographic profile and analysis ofsurvey data, the survey results will be provided in two sections

Figure 1: Year of Study

Numerous student organizations participated in the survey, and all replies werecollected The findings are displayed in Figure 1 for all student groups According tothe analysis rate, seniors made up 40% of those who responded to the poll With 9%,the group taking the poll at least includes juniors The other groupings includedfreshmen (39%) and sophomores (12%) In contrast to the survey findings, a sizableportion of first-year students were part-time workers
