2 Definitions and nomencla ture
For the purposes ofthis BritishStand rd, the

3 Genera l
3.1 Operation
The jack shal be desig ned to be used on a firm, lev el
sur ace to l ft one end, or one side,or one whe l of a
v ehicle, so that a stand or stands can be placed
u der that p rt of the v ehicle

sup orted only b the jack
3.2 Streng th and sta iity
3.2.1 The jack shal be d esig ned with a minimum
factor of safety of2.5 b sed on the ultimate tensi e
streng th of the component p rts when sup orting
the SW L
3.2.2 Each ty pe of trol ey jack shal be tested in
ac ord nce with Append ix A and shal show no
permanent deformation or fai ure of any p rt and
shal remain ful y sta le
3.2.3 Each ty pe of trol ey jack shal be tested in
ac ord nce with Append ix B an shal not ov erturn
d uring the test and shal show no permanent
d eformation or fai ure of any p rt
3.2.4 Each troley jack shal be tested in ac ord ance
with Appendix C an shal show no v isible c e p, no
permanent deformation and no fai ure of any p rt
3.3 Com ponent parts
Each jack shal comprise a hy d raul c pump u it,
reserv oir an operating mechanism control ng a
l fting beam and l fting hea housed in a chas is
hav ing four or more whe ls
3.4 Whe ls
The whe ls at the handle end shal be of the castor
ty pe, except in the case of lg ht duty jacks where
either castor or rig id whe ls are ac epta le These
castor whe ls where fit ed shal swiv el on
antif iction bearing s W hen a jack is stand ing on a
flat sur ace u der no load conditions, with thre
whe ls in contact with the surace, the fourth whe l
of the jack shal be within5mm of the same sur ace
3.5 Hy raul c fluid reserv ir
The hy draulc fluid reserv oir shal hav e suficient
ca acity to ena le the jack to raise the l fting hea
to its raised heig ht

operator’s bod y to entra ment betwe n the jack and
the v ehicle, and in any case entra ment of the
operator’s hands betwe n the v ehicle an the raised

The jack shal be desig ned to work in a temperature
rang e f om–20°C to+5 °C
3.1 Dim ensions
The ma imum closed heig ht and the minimum
raised heig ht shal be measured to the hig hest p rt
of the l fting hea

Appendix C Prooftest
Test each jack as fol ows:
a) raise the lfting beam to its ful desig ned
heig ht, ensuring that suficient hy draulc fluid is
present in the reserv oir at al times to prev ent
ing res of air to the hy draul c pres urizing
sy stem;
b) measure and record the ma imum raised
heig ht;
c) lower the l fting beam to its position of
ma imum hy d raulc pres ure;
d) ad just the ov erloa dev ice so that it is
inoperativ e;
e) a ply a loa to the lfting hea eq uiv alent
to1.25× SW L;
f) al ow to stand for5min to permit ex ansion;
g ) make any neces ary a justments to ensure
that the loa is maintained at1.25× SW L;
h) observ e the jack for any sig ns of c e p
for5min;
i u loa the jack an ex mine for permanent
deformation or faiure of any p rt;
j) reset the ov erloa dev ice so that it operates
betwe n the SW L and1.1× SW L when the lfting
beam is horiz ntal
