1 Scope

This BritishStand rd specifies req uirements for

fiv e ty pes of hy draul c trol ey jack that hav e be n

desig ned for ti ting and, in some instances,

mano uv ring v ehicles

The ty es and rang es of safe working load s ( SW L)

are as fol ows:

a) g eneral purpose: up to and

including20.4ton es ( se Ta le 1);

b) long reach: up to and including20.4ton es

( se Ta le 1);

c) lg ht duty : up to an including2.0ton es

( se Ta le 2);

d ) kerb: up to an including6.5ton es

( se Ta le 3);

e) hig h lft: up to an including1 0ton es

( se Ta le 4)

2 Definitions and nomencla ture

For the purposes ofthis BritishStand rd, the

fol owing d efinitions a ply an the nomenclature

shown in Fig ure 1 has be n a opted

g eneral purpose jacks

jacks intended for commer ial operation, including

mano uv ring v ehicles

2.2

long reach jacks

jacks simi ar to g eneral purpose jacks with a

minimum leng th of1 8 0mm

2.3

l g ht duty jacks

jacks intended for domestic ( i.e.non-commer ial

use They are not intended for mano uv ring v ehicles

2.4

kerb jacks

jacks suita le for easy transportation b v irtue of

their short leng th and d etacha le handle, intended

for commer ial operation including roa side use

They are not intended for mano uv ring v ehicles

2.5

hig h lft jacks

jacks simi ar to g eneral purpose jacks with a

minimum raised heig ht of the lfting hea

3 Genera l

3.1 Operation

The jack shal be desig ned to be used on a firm, lev el

sur ace to l ft one end, or one side,or one whe l of a

v ehicle, so that a stand or stands can be placed

u der that p rt of the v ehicle

NOT An o erator should not work u der a v hicle that is

sup orted only b the jack

3.2 Streng th and sta iity

3.2.1 The jack shal be d esig ned with a minimum

factor of safety of2.5 b sed on the ultimate tensi e

streng th of the component p rts when sup orting

the SW L

3.2.2 Each ty pe of trol ey jack shal be tested in

ac ord nce with Append ix A and shal show no

permanent deformation or fai ure of any p rt and

shal remain ful y sta le

3.2.3 Each ty pe of trol ey jack shal be tested in

ac ord nce with Append ix B an shal not ov erturn

d uring the test and shal show no permanent

d eformation or fai ure of any p rt

3.2.4 Each troley jack shal be tested in ac ord ance

with Appendix C an shal show no v isible c e p, no

permanent deformation and no fai ure of any p rt

3.3 Com ponent parts

Each jack shal comprise a hy d raul c pump u it,

reserv oir an operating mechanism control ng a

l fting beam and l fting hea housed in a chas is

hav ing four or more whe ls

3.4 Whe ls

The whe ls at the handle end shal be of the castor

ty pe, except in the case of lg ht duty jacks where

either castor or rig id whe ls are ac epta le These

castor whe ls where fit ed shal swiv el on

antif iction bearing s W hen a jack is stand ing on a

flat sur ace u der no load conditions, with thre

whe ls in contact with the surace, the fourth whe l

of the jack shal be within5mm of the same sur ace

3.5 Hy raul c fluid reserv ir

The hy draulc fluid reserv oir shal hav e suficient

ca acity to ena le the jack to raise the l fting hea

to its raised heig ht

3.6 Manufacture

W here casting s are used they shal comply with

BS310 if of ste l an BS6 81 if of cast iron In no

ev ent shal pe ning or plug g ing be used on casting s

or forg ing s

3.7 Finish

All cast, forg ed , mould ed or welded p rts shal be

f e of sand , dirt, fins, s ale, flux and other harmful

extrane us materials All external sur aces shal be

f e f om bur s, fins and sharp edg es an shal be

thoroug hly clean at the time of d isp tch

3.8 Pro isions for m aintenanc

3.8.1 All s rews, pins, bolts and simi ar p rts shal

hav e means for prev enting los of tig htnes or for

maintaining ad justment

3.8.2 All bearing s that req uire a reg ular serv ice

shal be prov id ed with ac es ible means of

lubrication

3.9 Safety devic s

3.9.1Each jack shal incorporate a dev ice to prev ent

lfting an ov erloa an a dev ice to prev ent trav el

p st its desig n stroke

3.9.2 A release mechanism shal be prov ided that

has a means of prev enting inad v ertent retraction

The release mechanism shal permit the operator to

control precisely the rate of des ent of the jack

lfting hea throug hout the ful rang e of mov ement

The release mechanism shal be so placed that it can

be operated without ex osing any p rt of the

operator’s bod y to entra ment betwe n the jack and

the v ehicle, and in any case entra ment of the

operator’s hands betwe n the v ehicle an the raised

hand le shal be prev ented

3.10 Cl matic conditions

The jack shal be desig ned to work in a temperature

rang e f om–20°C to+5 °C

3.1 Dim ensions

The ma imum closed heig ht and the minimum

raised heig ht shal be measured to the hig hest p rt

of the l fting hea

4 Performance

4.1 Operation

Each jack shal be ca a le of smo th operation

4.2 Lifting head

The lfting hea shal remain horiz ntal throug hout

the trav el of the l fting beam and be fe to rotate

least with a primer u d er oat and finish coat or an

alternativ e sur ace treatment that prov ides

eq uiv alent cor osion protection, except for those

hy draul c components that ne d to be protected

with suita le g rease

d) an instruction that sup ort stands alway s be

used and that operating instructions be refer ed

Appendix A Overload type test

Position the jack on a lev el sur ace Apply a load

equiv alent to1.25×SW L to the lfting head and

operate the jack throug hout its entire rang e of

mov ement

Appendix B Stabi ity type test

Position the jack on a plane incl ned at6° to the

horiz ntal and with the long itudinal a is of the jack

p ral el to the g rou d and at9 ° to the plane

( se Fig ure 2) Apply a loa equiv alent to the SW L

to the centre of the l fting head when at its

max imum heig ht Repeat the test with the jack

turned throug h18 °

Appendix C Prooftest

Test each jack as fol ows:

a) raise the lfting beam to its ful desig ned

heig ht, ensuring that suficient hy draulc fluid is

present in the reserv oir at al times to prev ent

ing res of air to the hy draul c pres urizing

sy stem;

b) measure and record the ma imum raised

heig ht;

c) lower the l fting beam to its position of

ma imum hy d raulc pres ure;

d) ad just the ov erloa dev ice so that it is

inoperativ e;

e) a ply a loa to the lfting hea eq uiv alent

to1.25× SW L;

f) al ow to stand for5min to permit ex ansion;

g ) make any neces ary a justments to ensure

that the loa is maintained at1.25× SW L;

h) observ e the jack for any sig ns of c e p

for5min;

i u loa the jack an ex mine for permanent

deformation or faiure of any p rt;

j) reset the ov erloa dev ice so that it operates

betwe n the SW L and1.1× SW L when the lfting

beam is horiz ntal
