Spe imens of the t extie ar rub ed with a dry rub ing cloth and with a wet rub ing cloth The machine

pro ides two combinations of t es ing con itions through two alt ernative siz s of rub ing f ing er: one

for pi e fa rics an one for sold colour or larg e print fa rics

4.1 Suitable testing devic e for determining the c olour fastnes to rubbing , using a r ecipr ocating

straig ht l ne rub ing motion an two alte native siz s of rub ing fing ers

4.1.1 F r pie fa rics, inclu ing textie flo r co e ing s: rub ing fing er with a r ectang ular rub ing

surfac with thelead edg e r ou ded measuring 1 mm × 25,4 mm (cr ock block)

The rub ing fing er shal ex ert a downward for e of ( 9 ± 0,2)N, mo ing t o an fro in a s raight lne along

a (1 4 ± 3) mm track

NOTE 1 Diff iculty might b e perienced in making as es ments of the de re of staining on the rub ing cloth

when pile fa ric are tested using the (16 ± 0,1)mm diameter rub ing f ing r d e to he vier staining oc ur ing on

the cir umference of the stained are , i.e haloing T e rub ing f ing r des rib d in 4.1.1 wil eliminat e the haloing

with man ty es of pile fa ric

4.1.2 F r othe tex ties: rub ing fing er comprised of a cylnde of (1 ± 0,1) mm diamete moving to

and fr o in a straig ht lne along a (1 4 ± 3) mm track on the spe imen an exe ting a downwar d force of

(9 ± 0,2) N

NOTE A suita le ap aratus is des rib d in R eference [2], AAT C Test Method 8 for 4.1.2, an AAT C

Test Method 165, for 4.1.1 Other devices can b used provided that the same results are o tained as with the

4.2 C t on r ubbing cloth, desiz d, bleached, without finish, cut into 5 mm sq ar es (± mm) for the

fing er used in 4.1.2

F or the fing er desc ibed in 4.1.1, a 2 mm × 1 0 mm ± 2 mm cloth is used S e ISO 1 5-F 9

4.3 Sof-back water proof abrasi ve paper , or g rating of stainles s e l w ir e 1 mm in diamete an

spe imen as they ma lea e an imprint through the t exti e w hich would cause a false rating t o bemade

4.4 Grey s ale, for as es ing s aining , in ac or danc with ISO 1 5-A 03

5.1 If the textie to be tes ed is a fa ric or tex tie flo r co e ing , two pie es not les than 50 mm × 140mm

ar e r eq ired for dry rub ing an two for wet rub ing

A dditional spe imens ma be used w hen highe pr cision is ne ded One spe imen of each pair shal

ha e the long dir ction paral el t o the warp y rns (or in the dir ction of man factur ), the othe p ralel

t o the wef (or f il ing y rns or at right angles t o the dir ction of man factur ) An alt ernat e method of

cut ing spe imens is t o cut the long dimension diag onal y t o warp an wef If the pi e la of a carpet

spe imen is dis inguisha le, cut the spe imen with the pi e la p inting in the long dir ction

5.2 If the tex tie to be tes ed is y rn or thr ead, k it it into fa ric to pr ovide spe imens at leas

5 mm ×140mm or form a la ye of p r alel stran s b w rap ing it leng thwa ys on a car db ard rectang le

5.3 Befor e tes ing , condition the spe imen and rub ing cloth for at leas 4 h in thestan ar d atmospher e

as defined in ISO 1 9 A lte native s an ar d atmospher es as defined in ISO 1 9 ma y only be used if the

p rties inv lved ag r ee an , in this case, the alte native atmosphere used shal be r ep rted C n itioning

6 Procedure

When t es ing multi-colour d t exties, car should be taken t o p sition the spe imens in such a wa

that al colours of the design ar rub ed in the t es using the devic desc ibed in 4.1.2 Alt ernatively, if

the ar as of colour ar sufficiently larg e, mor t es spe imens ma be taken an the in ivid al colours

as es ed sep rat ely If the ar as of colour ar smal an run t og ethe , a choic t o t es using a rotary

devic , as desc ibed in ISO 1 5- X 16, isadvised

6.2 Dry r ubbing

Plac the con itioned rub ing cloth ( e 4.2 an 5.3), flat o e the end of the f ing er with the wea e

p ralel t o the dir ction of rub ing fing er A t a rat e of one cycle pe se ond, rub t o an fro in a s raight

l ne 2 times, 1 times t o an 1 times fro, along a track (1 4 ± 3) mm long on the dry spe imen, with

downward for eof ( 9 ± 0,2) N ( e 4.1.1an 4.1.2) R emo e t es sq ar an con ition as in 5.3 R emo e

any extraneous fibrous mat erial that might int erfe e with the rating

ins ructions for rub ing in 6.2

NOTE As the level of so k of the rub ing cloth may dramatical y afect ratings, other levels can b used.An

e ample of a very commonly used level of so k is (65 ±5)%

7 Evaluation

7.1 Back each tes ed rub ing cloth with thr ee la ye s of white rub ing cloth whie ev luating

8 Test r eport
