Trang 17

1-Materials handling methods determine how materials are moved Logical systems set a

path between their origins and destinations 2-Movement systems are designed by

transporation management professionals These are designed to suit the particular needs of

a company A one- size- fits- all system will prove less practical and cost effective.

3-Movement systems can be direct or indirect In a direct systems, materials are moved

directly from origin to destination Materials are trasferred separately, one move at a time

4- In an indirect systems, materials are collected proceed through different areas to their

destination.

5-Some indirect systems are called route – based replenishment systems These revolve

around a central storage area, or supermaket This is useful when predetermined needs are

difficult to gauge.

6-Some examples of indirect replenishment sysytems are:

• Decouped pick and delivery

• Combined pick and delivery

7-A third example is decouped delivery and replenish This system uses a drop zone

SUMMARY

Trang 47

1 Why are material handling systems important to the

manufacturing process?

manufacturing process These systems are responsible for movement,

storage, and control of materials and goods This includes the transfer

of materials through the manufacturing process, distribution,

consumption, and disposal Systems must be designed to fit the meets

of manufacturers, transportation providers, warehouse facilities, retail

sales outlets, and consumers A one-size-fits-all system will not be the

most cost effective way to manage most material handling.

Trang 48

2 What is the difference between the two basic types of

movement systems?

The two basic types of movement systems are direct or indirect.

Both basic types define systems where goods are moved, by the

most efficient means possible, from their origin to their destination.

In a direct systems, materials are transferred directly and

separately from one point to the other This is accomplished one

move at a time Alternatively, in an indirect system, materials are

collected together onto shared equipment The materials proceed

on this equipment along a set path that goes through several

different areas on the way to the destination.
