Section one.
Trang 15You will hear a conversation between two students talking about job hunting First you have some time to look at questions one to five You will see the reason example this has been done for you.
On this occasion only the conversation relating to this will be played first.
Bradley: Oh hi, Anna, how it’s going I haven’t seen you since graduation
Anna: Hi, Bradley Things are great I’ve been traveling around Europe for the last month But nowthat I’m back, I really need to find a job, so I can start renting my own place
Bradley: Yeah, me too My mum’s driving me crazy I’ve got an interview on Thursday, it’s a companycalled POWER I’m pretty nervous
Anna: Don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll do great Do you know what the job involves?
Bradley: Well, the company has many sections like sourcing materials and taking care of wastemanagement But I’m interviewing for a job in thewarehouse (1) section.
Anna: Wow, I bet that will be really interesting
Bradley: You should apply too They still have a couple of jobs left I found their job interview on theirwebsite The reference is SW35FT
Anna: Thanks, Bradley That’s really nice of you I’ll apply later today Is there a contact I can ask for?Bradley: The manager is Susan Thatcher But you should contact her personal assistant, her name isJane Hitcher
Anna: How do you spell her surname for me please?
Bradley: Yes It’sH-I-T-C-H-E-R (2)
Anna: OK, great I actually found a job listing for a place at COTTON But the work hours don’t suit me.You should look into it
Bradley: Ah, that’s the grocery company, right? I heard that the job in the distribution office is reallywell-paid
Anna: The advertisement I saw was looking for people to work in thesupermarket (3) office, but the
pay still looked very good
Bradley: Was there a description of the job?
Anna: The company is looking to increase their production of cakes and pastries, so you will beworking as a cook in the bakery (4) After a month, they evaluate your performance and there’s
potentially an opportunity for promotion to a management position
Bradley: That sounds like a great opportunity I’ll definitely look into it Do you have the referencenumber? I’ll write it down on my notebook
Anna: Sure I also have the reference for a job at the art museum I’ll give you the reference for thatfirst It’s SGH667
Bradley: Great That’s really near my house And what the reference number for the bakery job atCOTTON?
Anna: The reference isARW204 (5).
Bradley: I’ll send them my application this afternoon Who’s the contact?
Trang 16Anna: The name on the advert was Melanie But it specifically said not to contact her in person Youshould use the office as your contact So just post you application there directly.
Bradley: You seem to have found way more job listings than I have Where did you find them all?Anna: First, I was keeping an eye out for listings on the Internet But all of the jobs listed there were inthe city I found that the best place to find local jobs was in magazineadverts (6).
Bradley: Adverts?
Anna: You know, the section at the back of Job Plus Magazine
Bradley: Where can I buy that?
Anna: You don’t buy it It’s a free magazine Just go to your nearest Corner Shop and buy the
newspaper (7) The magazine comes with it.
Bradley: Oh, I never realize My mum buys the newspaper every week, so there’s probbly be a copylying around at home somewhere I’ll have a look for it when I get back All this job hunting is sostressful and time-consuming
Anna: I can’t wait until it’s over either I’m so tempted just to pay someone to do all this for me.Bradley: What do you mean?
Anna: I could go to the recruitment seminar or toan agency (8).
Bradley: The agency sounds like a great idea They charge a fee before taking you on as a client, though Plus, only large corporations hire new employees through an agency
Anna: Well, I think it would be exciting
Bradley: If you decide to go to an agency make sure you take your student card with you Yourstudent status is valid for another month and agencies often give students a ten percent discount.Anna: Okay great, I'll remember that
Bradley: All the placements I've applied to require a referee I've never had a job before, so I don'tknow who to ask Who did you use?
Anna: I had a summer job working as a waitress so I asked my old boss I got on with him really well so
I trusted him to give me a good reference If you haven't had a job before you should ask one of your
Anna: That sounds like fun, do you have to pay?
Bradley: No, the tutor is a running it as a research project you just need to fill out thefeedback (10)
form at the end
Trang 17Anna: Great well I'll see you there good luck with your job hunting.
Bradley: Thanks good luck to you too See you soon
Listen carefully and answer questions 11 to 15.
Speaker 0: Good morning ladies and gentlemen Silence, please We are not ready to stop themeeting
Speaker 0: I have called this meeting to discuss city museum matters as there have been a number ofchanges made and I want to ensure that you will all fully informed
Speaker 0: There will be time for questions at the end so please don't interrupt until I'm finished.Speaker 0: Now that the formalities are out of the way, let's begin
Speaker 0: Firstly, some rumors have been brought to my attention that's our regular receptionistJane has been fired for her inexperience but this is untrue, I want to set the record straight
Speaker 0:Jane has had to take sick leave because she is ill (11) David is temporarily taking Jane's
place at reception
Speaker 0: He is also continuing his work as a security guard so please be considerate as he is quitebusy
Speaker 0: Second on the agenda is the master of the new Egyptian display at the museum
Speaker 0: A very generous benefactor who wishes to remain anonymous has donated a largecollection of Egyptian tombs and Mondays to improve our display
Speaker 0: As we have a surplus of stuff, I see no need to hire extra employees to monitor this newdisplay which means that you will have the exciting opportunity of taking on this responsibility Anyvolunteers can put their names forward after the meeting
Speaker 0: Thanks to a number of generous donations last year, the museum is certainly not sufferingfrom a lack of money
Speaker 0:I do however, feel that we are short of publicity so I'm hiring a new public relations team which will hopefully be able to attract more new visitors to come and view our magnificent display (12)
Speaker 0: I now have a serious matter to address
Speaker 0: As you all aware, a priceless statue was stolen from the museum last week during theannual open night
Speaker 0: Police questioned everyone at the scene and they provided us with the reports on how thethieves were able to get past our security precautions
Trang 18Speaker 0: All of the items in our displays are listed in our brochure and on our website, which is avery valuable results for the public The security guards at this site are very well trained but the online information meant that the thieves were able to steal the statue, because they knew what they were looking for (13)
Speaker 0: We have also looked at our security system to see if it can be upgraded
Speaker 0: However, we have been told that it will not be outdated for another five years
Speaker 0: It has been suggested by the police that we hire more guards However I do not believethis would be the right approach
Speaker 0: We would run the danger of having too much security which would intimidate visitors andcause them to feel unsafe
Speaker 0:Instead I feel that we should buy some new closed-circuit television cameras so that we can monitor every part of gallery without disturbing all visitors (14)
Speaker 0: Another benefit to this system is that there is no need to buy anymore computers todisplay the camera feeds as we already have some spare our store
Speaker 0: Now let's move on to other matters
Speaker 0: We have expanded our supply of books at the library And I’m therefore looking to hire anew member of stuff This job role does not carry many responsibilities but our new librarian shouldhave worked in the library. In other words they should be experienced (15) We welcome young
applicants who are interested in becoming highly trained in the art of book preservation
Before you hear the rest of the tool you have some time to look at questions sixteen to twenty.
Now listen and answer question sixteen to twenty.
Speaker 0: As the final matter for today's meeting, I am delighted to show you the plans for ourproposed new extension to the reception area
Speaker 0: Please turn your attention to the plan in front of you.If you enter through the entrance doors and go around the shop corner you will find on your left the new box office (16) From this
position the box office manager can both sell tickets and ensure that no visitors are able to enter atthe museum without paying
Speaker 0: From here,if you walk towards the door on the far left wall, you will come across our new children's room where visitors can leave their children to play, while they’re discovering our display (17)
Speaker 0: Directely to the right to the children's from is when we originally intended to locate thecafe
Speaker 0:But we felt that it would be better placed in the bottom right corner of the plan we we can create a more intimate atmosphere (18)
Speaker 0:Due to generous donations we now have the available funds to build a fantastic new multimedia room where visitors will have access to computers cameras and TVs (19)
Trang 19Speaker 0: This exciting new space will be in the top right corner but it is safely away from theentrance doors.
Speaker 0: Finally the showroom will be built in the top left corner directly opposite the new multimedia room (20)
Speaker 0: I hope that you are all as excited about this new spaces as I am
Speaker 0: Another time finished I would be happy to answer any questions
That is the end of section two you Now have half a minute to check your answers.
Section 3
You will hear two students called Tom and Bella attending the third meeting of the after school club They are talking with the professor about a furniture company.
First you have some time to look at questions 21 to twenty 26.
Now listen carefully and also questions 21 to 26.
Speaker 0: Before we start, Tom and Bella, thanks for coming in today to talk about the key casestudies that will help you to understand your class work better
Speaker 0: Now I hope you read the notes I gave you last week on the furniture company Willows asthis will be the focus of our discussion today Let's begin Who can tell me what the current focus ofthe company's business is
Speaker 2: The company used to be very large with many resell outlets across the country Howeversince the recession there have been few people spending money on furniture and so the companywas forced to close all of its outlets and now only operates online
Speaker 0: Well done Tom the Bella, can you add anything?
Speaker 1: Willows used to produce a very large number of products, such as tables, chairs and lightfittings. However through market research they realize that most of their profit was made from the sale of bookcases so they now specialize in this one product (21)
Speaker 0: Very good Does anyone know how our department began its contact with Willows?Speaker 2: Did you contact the company professor?
Speaker 0: Tom it wasn't through me
Speaker 1: Our headmaster saw an article that the manager had written in the newspaper and became very interested in the company (22) He contacted Willow's and arranged for student to work
there full time during this summer
Speaker 0: Yes exactly Does anyone know what the student source of that time working at Willows.Speaker 2: Yes he's a friend of ours
Speaker 2: He worked as a member of the design team creating technical drawings of the furnitureusing a computer
Speaker 2:There was a special software that he used, which he said had a bad interface and was very difficult to predict (23) However it was very efficient and helpful for quickly drawing up furniture
designs
Trang 20Speaker 0: How interesting.
Speaker 1: Yes, it was We both visited him once he was working there and he showed us around.Unfortunately visitors were not allowed to access the IT department but it was great to chat with hiscolleagues
Speaker 0: Did you meet his manager?
Speaker 2: His manager is a very busy man so he didn't have time to meet with us.However we were allowed to inspect the accounts (24) which really helps us to understand the effects of the software
on the company
Speaker 0: Well what an exciting experience
Speaker 0: Now before I forget, next week I'll be conducting face to face interviews with each of you
to prepare for job interviews
Speaker 1: Can we do it as a group?
Speaker 0: I'm afraid not, Bella
Speaker 0: I want to give each of you my undivided attention and that will be too much disturbances if I interview you all together (25)
Speaker 0: Plus it will be more realistic if I interview you alone
Speaker 2: Have you finished writing the feedback on our exam results professor?
Speaker 0: Yes I have Tom I must say that I was not disappointed I am glad to say that yourperformance has dramatically increased since you began attending this after school club and you have both scored above the average (26)
Speaker 0: If you continue to work hard, your results should soon improved significantly
Before you hear the rest of the conversation you have some time to look at questions 27 to 30.Now listen and also questions 27 to 30
Speaker 0: Now back to our discussion about
Speaker 0: Can anyone tell me what business decisions might benefit the company?
Speaker 1: I knew system would definitely benefit Willows their system is very outdated I don't think
it would help them to gain more profit However this system is capable of doing the work of hundreds
of people. This would, therefore, significantly lower labor costs (27)
Speaker 2: I agree Unfortunately, unless they also replace the machinery in that workshop, the newsystem won’t reduce the production time
Speaker 1: That is a shame if they can't reduce their production time, they won't be able to increasesales. The answer is to hire more staff in order to increase the efficiency of the production line (28)
Speaker 0: Yes, you have both made interesting points
Speaker 0: Now for one final question before we finish this week session
Speaker 0: How will new clients be affected by the new system?
Trang 21Speaker 2: Unfortunately the new system does not allow clients to connect to the Willows systemfrom home, so they are unable to access they work online This also means that the system presents
no opportunity to attract more contacts since clients are unable to view it from their homes
Speaker 1: Yes that's true However it could definitely benefit clients who visit the showroom. The system is very interactive and allows clients to easily browse the furniture catalog which will save them a lot of time (29)
Speaker 2: It's a shame that stuff is still needed to guide clients through the online system as it means
no savings can be made in labor costs
Speaker 2: I think the major benefits of the new system is that it enables staff to design the furniture
in front of the client, which allows them to get a lot more involved in the design (30)
Speaker 0: Bravo! You both contributed fantastic points to a conversation
Speaker 0: That concludes our session today I'll see you next week
This is the end of section three you now have half a minute to check your answers.
Section 4
Good morning Today I’d like to discuss the results of our patients’ survey We have reviewed the datacollected in order to measure the strength and weaknesses of our hospital and to determine potentialfuture plans for improvement The first question on the survey attempted to determine the mainreason that patients choose come to our hospital for treatment rather than others in the vicinity Thedata showed that even though our hospital is not as centrally located as others,we offer a very good transportation service that enables patients to travel here by bus or train free of charge (31).
Despite there being other hospitals that are larger with more facilities than ours, we still have higherpatient numbers
The second question on the survey asks what quality patients hope for most when visiting thehospital There were five choice options, including short waiting times and friendly service fromnurses However, the data collected showed that most patients hope that the hospital is clean when they visit it (32) It seemed that patients were not concerned with the clarity of science and
notices in the hospital, as this option got the smallest number of votes. They were, however, very keen to be given prior information by the staff about hospital treatment (33) Using the data
collected from our survey, we have developed a list of actions that will be adopted within the nextyear
A main focus of this improvement is our website, which is currently very outdated We will not onlyupdate our in-hospital service for the use of the medical staff, but also our main service so that local residents can also benefit from it (34) We hope that this new service will attract a large number of
new patients
It is clear from the feedback that many members of staff are unhelpful towards patients andinefficient when carrying out their tasks We feel that some incentive is needed to boost motivation
Trang 22to perform better. And so, we are implementing a system whereby staff will be awarded an extra bonus for their success (35) The member of staff who has received the most bonuses at the end of
the year will be announced as Staff Member of The Year We will continue to monitor progress on thisissue through patient feedback forms,so that the opinions of our visitors will constantly be taken into consideration (36) Another issue that the survey has brought to light is the long delays
experienced by visitors awaiting treatment, with some visitors reporting waiting times of up to 5hours This is unacceptable We need to improve the effectiveness of communication between patients, doctors and staff (37), so we have decided to implement a ticketing system This means
the patients are seen on a first come - first served basis, and will never have to wait more than 2hours to be seen by a doctor
The final topic that I want to cover in the lecture is the recommendation that we have put forward forfuture improvements to the hospital Firstly, we intend to be the first hosptal in the country tobuild a new unit for those suffering from sleep disturbance (38), which is relatively a common illness
affecting up to 6% of the population While at the hospital we primarily treating patients withillnesses and injuries, we cannot ignorethe significant income that those in need of plastic surgery (39) can bring to the hospital We will, therefore, also be proposing a new ward to give patients
access to this inceasingly popular treatment After much discussion about the quality and suitability ofour equipment, we have decided that it is advanced enough to cope with the treatments that weoffer, and that our spending should be directed to other areas, where it would have a more significantimpact. We feel that more effective planning is needed to improve the efficiency of the form of communication (40) that patients have with us Therefore, patients who have received treatment will
receive an email linked to a survey that they can fill out online This will eradicate meaninglesspaperwork and will also enable us to digitally monitor the data collected Now, anyone has anyquestions?
Trang 23Test 2
Section 1
You will hear a number of different recordings and you'll have to answer the questions on what you hear There will be time for you to read the instructions and questions and you have a chance to check your work All the recordings will be played once only.
The test is in four sections, at the end of the test you will be given ten minutes to transferring your answers to an answer sheet.
Now turn to section one.
Speaker 0: This is the Leighton society, how can I help?
Speaker 1: Hello I'm just phoning you because I'm interested in becoming a member of your society Iwas wondering if you could give me some more information
The name of the society is Leighton.
Leighton has been written and the space.
Now we shall begin You should also the questions as you listen because you will not hear the recording a second time Listen carefully and on the questions one to five.
Speaker 0: This is the Leighton society, how can I help
Speaker 1: Hello I'm just phoning you because I'm interested in becoming a member of your society Iwas wondering if you could give me some more information
Speaker 0: Of course what would you like to know?
Speaker 1: First of all, I'd like to know where you hold the club meetings, as I'm not very mobileanymore and I'm looking for somewhere that's within walking distance of my house Are you stilldown at the old boat house?
Speaker 0: No, we moved away from that a while ago, meetings are now held at another Club House (1)
Speaker 1: Oh brilliant, that’s only five minutes away from me Do you require members to have anyskills or experience?
Speaker 0: No, there was no experience required. We have plenty of female singers and actresses, but we don't have many men who can play the male roles (2) We are looking to resolve this and are
especially interested in recruiting male actors and singers
Trang 24Speaker 1: I've never sung professionally but I'm very keen on it And I’ve been told I'm talented so Ithink this would be a good fit Do you organize coaches to transport members to practice at thetheater?
Speaker 0: Unfortunately the club does not have sufficient funds to organize transportation, so this issomething we're working towards. We are currently looking for members who can drive so that we can organize carsharing (3) Members who are able to shuttle people in their cars will obviously be
compensated for their petrol usage
Speaker 1: I don't drive but I'll be happy to contribute some money in order to use the shuttleservices
Speaker 0: Yes, that is no problem Are you aware of when the meetings take place?
Speaker 1: No, I couldn't find a meeting times on your website
Speaker 0:We hold meetings from six to eight PM every Tuesday (4)
Speaker 1: Oh, that's lucky I go to a debating club every Wednesday so I'm glad that it's on a differentnight so I can attend both Do you operate year round?
Speaker 0: We used to close during December for the Christmas period, but we found that a lot ofmembers wanted to continue that practices during this time.We operate for most of the year but we
do however close on August, because the what they get so hot that we are unable to practice comfortably (5) This may change when we have enough funds to operate the air conditioning.
Before you hear the rest of the conversation you have some time to look at questions six to ten Now listen and also questions six to ten.
Speaker 1: Okay, I also wanted to ask how much the membership fee is and what is included with it.Speaker 0: Membership fee is inexpensive and it includes many benefits that certainly make the costsworth it
Speaker 0: For example, we hold an annual events where members can meet each other andconverse about topics that they have in common We find that this is very popular as the dinner istruly superb and included with your membership fee
Speaker 1: Wow that sounds great, and how much does membership cost?
Speaker 0: We have a couple of membership rates depending on your age and situation Employedmember under the age of thirty three is forty pounds what it cost sixty pounds for members agedbetween thirty and sixty Which of these categories you fit into?
Speaker 1: I don't fit into either of those I'm sixty five years old and retired so I'm no longeremployed
Speaker 0: That's not a problem at all You qualify for the lowest price membership fee of twenty fivepounds, which applies to those who are either unemployed or retired
Speaker 1: Wow, that's really affordable I was thinking of bringing my grandson along to some of thepractices so what what the membership costs for him, he's fourteen
Trang 25Speaker 0: I'm afraid that the club is for adults only. That's just to say we don't allow members who were age sixteen and under (8) He is welcome to join in two years time day.
Speaker 1: That's a shame I guess I can wait and buy him a membership for his birthday present.Speaker 0: Yes was a good idea
Speaker 1: I was hoping I could bring him with me so I have someone there to talk to, I'm worried Iwon't have anything in common with the other members
Speaker 0: I'm sure you'll fit in just fine All our members are very friendly and interested in cultureand music. Most of the people involved are modern writers looking for new experiences to write about in their books (9) You could read some of their book so you have something to discuss with
That is the end of section one you now have whole four minutes to check your answers.
Now turn to section two.
Section 2
You will hear a part of the talk given by a director of the train station First you have some time to look
at questions eleven to fourteen Now listen carefully and answer questions eleven to fourteen.
Hello and thank you for attending this meeting I have called it to discuss station matters as they havebeen a number of changes made and I want to ensure that you are all filled in
As I'm sure you will all have heard, there are plans on the way to make some alterations to the stationcomplex
Though we did the reconstruction work that occurred last year, from the data collected this year wehave learned that our station is too small to cope with a large number of visitors passing through it on
Trang 26were later converted into shops (12) These buildings will, of course, be demolished to make room for
our new facilities
What is going to be built on this new site? I see thinking to yourselves
There have been lots of ideas put forward by all the parties involved.Initially the station had planned
to use the site as a car park (13) However, we decided this would be a very unsatisfactory way to
occupy the space Instead, we have hired an architect who has an exciting vision to transform the siteintoa large leisure center complete with cafes shops and the lounge where visitors can relax (14)
We hope that this new complex will attract many visitors, not just from the station but also from theapartment blocks in the nearby town center As part of the construction works we are also going tocreate new formal gardens where visitors can enjoy the greenery and sits outside in the fresh air.The new leisure complex will be located to the right of the shopping district, so these formal gardenswill serve as a meeting place for pedestrians
Before you hear the rest of the tool you have some time to look at questions fifteen to twenty.
Now listen and also questions fifteen to twenty.
Now I'm delighted to be able to introduce you all to the plans for our new complex If you couldplease focus your attention on the maps in front of you, we will start to the main entrance to makeour waytowards the cafe, which is located behind the wall that we can see directly in front of us (15)
Just next to the rear entrance, in this position the cafe is obscured from the entrances, which willkeep this space warm and also create an intimate atmosphere
Once visitors arrive at our station, they often need further transport in order to reach their homes. Therefore, we have introduced ataxi rank with its own waiting area In order to reach these facilities, the visitors must simply leave the complex via the rear entrance and turn left (16) Visitors who have
traveled to the station by car can leave itin the car park for a small fee, which is located just outside
of the rear entrance to the right (17)
At present, our station does not have an internal seating area for passengers, so they're forced towait for the trains outside on the platforms, which can be particularly unpleasant during the winter
We have therefore decided to introduce a passenger waiting area inside the new complex to the right of the rear entrance with comfortable seating, where passengers can pass the time comfortably in the warmth (18)
As this space is a distance away from the station, we have also proposed a waiting area for wheelchair users that is closer (19)
As visitors enter through the main entrance, the space will be located behind the wall to the left Finally we have also decided that it will be a great idea to introduce a new tourist office, (20) where
visitors can get maps and information on a wonderful town We want this new office to be easilyaccessible so visitors entering through the main entrance will find it directly to that right now
I think that's all I have to tell you please feel free to ask any questions if you would like to knowanything else
Trang 27The end of section two.
You now have half a minute to check your answers.
Section 3
You will hear three students discussing an experiment they're interested in.
First you have some time to look at questions twenty one to twenty five.
Now listen carefully and also questions twenty one to twenty five.
Hi Jen and Irene Are you two heading to class?
Hey Bill, yes we're just walking there now We're a little bit early but we wanted to prepare ourapparatus for the experiment Do you want to walk with us?
Yes, sure It'll be good to catch up How is everything going with your experiment? Have you decidedwhat your test subject is yet?
It's going really well, and we're conducting the test as laboratory partners We decided to test theeffects of gravitational force on a series of objects with different densities It's interesting but it's a lot
of work I've been planning the experiment for the last two weeks and I only finished yesterday.Irene, I'm really impressed by how hard working you are
I enjoy chemistry so much that it doesn't feel like work Whenever I have some free time at the weekend, I spend it in the laboratory working on it (21) It almost feels like a second home to me.
How about you Bill, who was your laboratory partner?
The tutor partnered me with Kim At first I was worried because I've never worked with him before, and I was worried that he wouldn't be very good at laboratory work, but I actually he's very capable.I've noticed that he's always very well-dressed
Yes, he's very stylish and we share the same taste in clothes That doesn't stop him from getting hishands dirty though He's a very hard worker and makes a significant contribution which I'm really grateful for (22)
On it's good that you get on well with your partner It makes the experiment so much more enjoyablewhen you work well together What do you think of the other people in our group?
A lot of the boys are really good at maths, which is really helpful with all the calculations we have todo
Irene is good at maths as well, which makes a contribution really useful because you can do theequations I take care of for the writing because Irene finds that difficult We'd probably fail withouteach other's help
That's true, I'm so glad that we’re nearly finished.
Only because you finish the data analysis (23)
Oh, Jen you give me too much credit!
I'm so glad that I didn't get paired with Linda again Jenna and I were grouped with her for the lastexperiment and it was a nightmare
Trang 28Yes, she always submitted her work on time for the great work, but she never had a sign on herso it was impossible for anyone to keep in touch with her and vice versa (24)
Her attitude was pretty annoying But in all fairness, she was a very hard worker because she realizedthe amount of work needed to get a high score
Jen is a hard worker In fact she's been invited to work on the professor's personal project
Wow that's amazing, well done Why were you picked?
I thought he would pick one of the students that he's close to, but he told me he was impressed with
me,because I always complete reading the assignments in time for class (25)
I bet you'll be really popular among the other students when they find out They'll all want to hearabout the project
Before you hear the rest of the conversation you have some time to look at questions twenty six to thirty.
Now listen and also questions twenty six to thirty.
You should give everyone tasks so that they have the opportunity to participate
That's a really good idea actually Would you help me decide who to assign each task to?
Now let's see Well as Irene finds writing difficult, perhaps it would be useful for her to practice that
by doing the bibliography
I think the bibliography is a bit long for me.I think I'd be better suited to the methodology (26)
Yes, that makes sense Bill, you've told us that Kim is a hard worker. So I think he should be tasked with the conclusions as there is quite a lot of effort involved (27)
Okay, sure I knew that Kyle hasn't been feeling well, so he should take care of the abstract and theacknowledgement because there is very little work to be done for those tasks
Jen, do you want to review some of the literature? It's a lot of work but I know that you really enjoy writing, so I'm confident that you'll do a good job.
Sure, sounds great (28)
Right, so that leaves the bibliography and the discussion to assign.I think that Linda will struggle with the amount of work involved in the referencing, so perhaps I should take care of that task and she can do the other one (29 & 30)
That's great guys Thanks for your help I'll tell the tutor when he arrives
This is the end of section three you now have half a minute to check your answers.
Now turn to section four.
Section 4
You will hear a talk on research in nanotechnology First you have some time to look at questions 31 to

Good morning everyone Welcome to the second lecture in our series on modern technology TodayI'll be discussing the recent developments in nanotechnology, in addition to its applications in a
Trang 29number of environments such as domestic and medical First of all I'd like to begin with a shortexplanation of what nanotechnology is It is the manipulation of matter on an atomic molecular andsuper molecular scale Because of its limitless applications and uses, the government has investedbillions of dollars into the research and development of nanotechnology in order to explore itspotential It is only recently that we have been able to engage in the development of nanotechnology since the particles are so minuscule that a new type of microscope had to be invented to enable us to see them (31)
Many of you may not realize that we all use nanotechnology in our homes as a part of our daily lives. For example, the new dietary supplement uses nanotechnology in order tohelp our body to absorb iron from our diet (32) more efficiently which can help to prevent anemia This technology also makes it easier and cheaper for factories to produce foods such as chocolates (33) as the nano
molecules help the food to meet our recommended daily intake of certain vitamins and minerals Thismay sound odd but in fact it just means that the food is healthier and cheaper andhas increased flavor (34)
Another application for nanotechnology is in the agriculture industry In the past farmers have beenusing many artificial chemicals to fertilize the soil which is extremely bad for the planet as itcontaminates the water that we drink By using nanotechnology scientists have been able to develop
a spray whichincreases the efficiency of fertilizers (35) that occur naturally in the soil This means
that a lot more food can now be produced per square hectare, making it cheaper and more efficient
to grow without harming the planet
One of the industries upon which nanotechnology has had the biggest impact is the production ofpharmaceuticals One of the most commonly occurring illnesses is food poisoning, as many foodshave naturally occurring contaminants that can be harmful if eaten without being thoroughly cooked
Nanotechnology makes it possible for us to sterilize the food and make it safe to eat by killing these bacteria (36) A major success in the use of nanotechnology in the medical field is in the treatment of
cancer Researchers have found that they can attach medicine to nanoparticles which are theninjected into the body andenable the therapeutic drugs to be absorbed into the veins (37) These
drugs then travel throughout the blood system and target cancerous tumors
Scientists have also discovered that certain metals contain nanoparticles that have antibacterialqualities with the ability to destroy over 650 types of bacteria These metals are used for example onfridges to prevent the growth of bacteria They can even be woven into materials to create clothingthat is self-cleaning and has an attractive metallic appearance. The most popular of these materials contains silver which naturally has the strongest antibacterial qualities (38) These clothes have a
special tag on them to show that they use nanotechnology So keep a look out for them next time you
go shopping Another observation made by some researchers showed that certain types ofnanoparticles called a spliffarines can destroy fat tissues and therefore stimulate fat loss without theneed for dieting or exercise They are currently developing a supplement that can be ingested in
Trang 30order to help dieters with their weight loss programs (39) It is predicted that these supplements will
be on the market by 2020
I would like to finish today's lecture with a final example of a domestic application for nanotechnologycosmetics Nanoparticles are used in many makeups and body lotions but they have the greatesteffect in sunscreen Ultraviolet rays given off by the sun are a serious cause of skin cancer but thenanoparticles in sunscreen protect the skin against the sun byblocking the ultraviolet radiation from entering the body (40) This is why you must always wear suntan lotion on the beach Now I'd be
happy to answer any questions you may have
That is the end of Section 4 You now have half a minute to check your answers That is the end of the listening test In the IELTS Test you will now have 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the answer sheet.
Test 3
Section 1
You will hear a number of different recordings and you'll have to answer questions on what you hear There will be time for you to read the instructions and questions and you'll have a chance to check your work All the recordings will be played once only The test is in four sections At the end of the test you will be given 10 minutes to transfer your answers to an answer sheet Now turn to Section 1 You will hear a man phoning to inquire about a job vacancy First you'll have some time to look at questions 1 to 5.
You will see there is an example that has been done for you.
On this occasion only the conversation relating to this will be played first.
Good afternoon Palm resort
Good afternoon I am ringing about the job I understand you have vacant Oh yes I'd like to find outsome more information if I may
Yes of course Can I take your name?
It's Freddy Lee Okay
The man's name is Freddie Lee So Freddie Lee has been written in this space Now we shall begin You should answer the questions as you listen because you will not hear the recording a second time Listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 5.
Good afternoon Palm resort
Good afternoon I am ringing about the job I understand you have vacant Oh yes I'd like to find outsome more information if I may
Yes of course Can I take your name?
Trang 31It's Freddie Lee.
Okay, Freddie What would you like to know?
First of all I'd like to know where your resort is located
It's near the city center on Jamieson island That's J A M I E S O N
Brilliant That's only five minutes from me I finish at my college on the 12th of May, so I'll be availablefor work from that date Will there be any vacancies at that time?
Well summer is our busiest season, beginning on the 11th July (1), so that's when you will be starting.
Sounds good And are there any age limitations?
That would depend on the place you're applying for How old are you?
I'm 17
Well we require our bartenders to be 18 or older, which means you would be working as awaiter (3)
There are four vacancies They were originally six However we have since two of these
Okay great Could I ask about the pay?
We're offering five pounds fifty two pence an hour
That's very good My last job was four pounds forty five an hour And can I also ask about whatqualities you're looking for Like any particular skills or experience?
We don't normally require applicants to have any past experience However during the summerseason we have weekly shows in which our waiters are asked to perform routines are very simple. So
no dancing skills are needed however you will need to be able to sing (4)
I have never sung professionally but I am keen on it and have been told that I'm talented So I thinkthis will be a good fit Are there any other duties that I'd be responsible for?
As a waiter, you'll have a few different duties We offer a table service so you'll have to take foodorders from customers and carry the food from the kitchen to their tables We like to give ourcustomers a relaxed experience,so we'll also need you to supervise and take care of their children (5)
I have a baby sitter so I'm very comfortable doing that Is there a play area for them in the resort?Unfortunately, there is no facility for children here at the resort But there is a large playground justdown the road
Before you hear the rest of the conversation You have some time to look at questions 6 to 10 Now listen and answer questions 6 to 10.
So I would just walk the children down to the playground each day?
No, the road is very busy and the pavements are so narrow that it's unsafe to take the children forwalks there
It would be very advantageous if you could drive (6), so that you can safely strap the children into
the back seat and transport them back and forth
I'm currently taking driving lessons So if all goes well I should have my permit by the time I beginwork
Trang 32We feel it's pretty good and we also offer some good fringe benefits for our employees.
Really?
Well because of the difficulties of getting public transport If you're working after 10 o'clock we drive you home (7)
Okay that sounds fine
Do you have a staff room where I would be able to eat my pack lunches?
All of our employees eat in the dining hall once our customers have finished eating their lunch. We like to make sure that our employees are well nourished, so we would provide you with a meal every lunchtime (8) There is no need to bring in a pack lunch.
Wow that's good to know I think that's all of the information that I needed I'll be sure to post myapplication to you later today
Okay sure Once we have looked over your application we may ask you to come for an interview Wenormally hold our interviews on Fridays However, the manager is taking a long weekend this week
So the interview would be on Thursday (9) Is that okay for you?
That's good for me Fine Ten thirty a.m Yes fine Would 10 o'clock be okay?
Perfect And could you bring along a reference letter from your employer?
Yes That's fine No problem Could you tell me what else I have to do?
Well you need to come into the desk and fill out some forms We need a document for ID, so a bankstatement would be fine
I've got that And what else?
Well you need to bring a photo with you (10) Having said that it will be also a good idea for you to
attach it to your application This will help us to distinguish your application from the others
Okay No problem I have a couple of spares from when I renewed my passport
We look forward to seeing you
Okay Thank you so much You've been very helpful
Now listen carefully and answer questions from 11 to 14.
Hello Welcome to Pine garden My name is Manuel and I'd like to tell you a few things about ourestablishment before you all wander off and begin your exploration of the grounds I know you'rekeen to begin so I'll try to keep this short First of all, I'd like to explain what you can do with yourticket If you want to be closer to nature, you could visit our planting area In that area, visitors canplant small flowers and buds that will grow and become part of the garden The planting activity is
Trang 33completely free However, if you have sensitive hands, you'll need to purchase garden gloves toprotect your skin Here at Pine garden we sell a number of wooden goods carved from trees that havebeen felled in our very own pine forest If you feel like getting involved and having a go yourself, you can join one of our bush timbering lessons free of charge (11) where you'll be able to make your own
keyring under the supervision of a skilled craftsman The most popular attraction in the garden is ouraviary, where you can observe a whole range of bird species Entry to this section is free, but you have
to pay a small supplement in order to enter the hummingbird section Also the insect hut not far from
it may arouse your interest. There you can find some interesting insects such as butterflies, pocket ladybugs, dragonflies and so on and there's no extra charge for that (12) Unfortunately, there are
some areas that are temporarily off limits to visitors today For example, the gift shop has closedearlier this year and won't be open for another month or so As I mentioned before, however, you'refree to visit our restaurant for food and snacks. And if you're looking to purchase a gift, why not buy that special someone a potted bush or orchid from our plant care center? (13) And our new treetop
Cafe is under construction which will be very impressive when it's finished. In fact the model towns already opened ahead of schedule and it's attracting a lot of people (14) Now, our tourist office is
normally available to provide tourists with a variety of help
However the officer is sick at home today Please do not let this discourage you from visiting these asthey provide quite an experience
Before you hear the rest of the talk you'll have some time to look at questions 15 to 20.
Now listen and answer questions 15 to 20.
I also would like to introduce you to our plant specialists, who are responsible for the wonderful plantdisplays here at Pine garden. And Mrs Mary is one of our experts and she is personally responsible for our beautiful display of plants that are all found growing naturally in the local area (15) Mr Berson has the difficult task of growing varieties of plants that are suited to much drier and hotter climates than ours (16) which means we do not have to store water on site If you visit the
Glasshouse, you'll be able to see many plants that he has managed to cultivate without the need forrain or irrigation.Mr Smith is responsible for the produce that you can eat in our restaurant (17),
which ranges from varieties that grow under the ground to those that grow on trees and bushes. Now
Mr Nunee here is our expert on the most commonly growing plant in the world – Grass (18) You
may have noticed how beautifully green and lush our grounds are thanks to his specialist knowledge
Mr Scanlan ensures that our soil is full of nutrients so that the natural habitat is supported and encouraged (19) He does this by fertilizing the earth with a special formula of his own creation.
Finally,I would like to introduce you all to Dr Mendelsohn He is the manager of our landscaping team and works closely with our other experts to ensure that everyone works together to create a landscape that is both beautiful and sustainable (20) Well that just about rounds it up Now if
anyone has any questions?
That is the end of section 2 You now have half a minute to check your answers Now turn to Section 3.
Trang 34Section 3
You will hear Sally and Mike to students and the professor talking about their classwork.
First you have some time to look at questions twenty one to twenty six.
Now listen carefully and also questions twenty one to twenty six.
Hello Sally and Mike
Hello, Sir
Welcome to the third meeting of our after school club, where we discuss topics from the syllabus inorder to help you to understand your class work better Now I hope that you read the notes I gaveyou last week on the ancient African traditions, as this will be the focus of our discussion today Whocan tell me how they were able to recognize different styles?
Did they measure the distance between them?
I know Sally, I'm afraid that's incorrect Mike, do you know the answer?
Historians used to think that the ancient Africans recognize stars by observing the manner in whichthey affected each other, but further research showed that they use the location of the stars in order to distinguish one from the other (21)
Well done, Mike, very good Can either of you tell me anything about Weyaka people?
They have a lot of money but do not trust banks to keep it safe They believe that it's in their bestinterest to help themselves, not assist others.Instead the tribe looks after their own finances and generate income from lending money to others in low interest loans (22)
What problems to the African suffer from?
They used to suffer greatly from drought However, they have now developed clever ways ofovercoming it by moving to higher land There are, however, far more predators in thesemountainous areas so it is vital that the Africans learn how to protect themselves in this new environment (23)
Yes that's right Also compared to more developed countries, the Africans are less concerned withtheir international status, which I find interesting
Very good What else to the local people concerned with?
Unlike other poorer tribes, they have plenty of nourishing food and they are able to afford vaccinesthat prevent them from catching diseases
They historically lived in the west of Africa, although later they were chased off their land by othertribes competing for food and water. It is their hope that they will eventually be able to return to their original homeland (24)
Why has the financial condition of the African people deteriorated?
Despite the modern transportation system, they find it very difficult to trade because that tools are not sophisticated enough to mine minerals from the land (25) They have permission to engage in
Trang 35these commercial activities so once they have the right tools, they will be able to develop a very largeincome from trade.
Do you think that this new income will stop African suffering from starvation in the near future?Unfortunately, I don't think so they should be able to start trading next year, but they will only have enough income to start growing sufficient food in crops to support the local people in the long term future (26)
Yes that's correct
Before you hear the rest of the conversation you have some time to look at questions twenty seven to thirty.
Now listen and also questions twenty seven to thirty.
There are many charities from developed countries that are helping to ship food to African countries
in order to feed the starving Unfortunately it is difficult to transport a lot of food to the right places,
but Africans are very good at sharing and making sure that everyone get something to eat (27)
African governments are also starting to pay more attention to the needs of their people they havebeen directing a lots of money to help build schools in the more impoverished villages, as a part of
the new education plan, which is fantastic this means that hopefully (28)
That means African children will be able to attend school daily without having to walk long distances.Yes, absolutely do you remember any other information from your class notes?
Historically, the tribes in Africa often used to migrate across the country in search of food and waterthey would live in tents that were easy to dismantle and transport to other locations
That's true, but now they're being encouraged to settle down in one area (29), so they can establish
colonies and build facilities for themselves such as houses and schools Some villages have evendevelop specific customs. For example, Weyaka people considerate impolite if you do not bring gifts when visiting someone (30)
Although you've contributed fantastic points to a conversation That concludes our session for today.I'll see you next week
This is the end of section three you now have half a minute to check your answers.
Now turn to section four.
Section 4
You will hear a talk on the research of the sensory systems of different species First you have some time to look at questions 31 to 40.
Now listen carefully and answer questions 31 to 40.
Good day ladies and gentlemen Welcome to the second lecture in our series on animals senses.Today I'll be comparing the sensory systems of different species and discussing how these sensesenabled them to explore their environment When it comes to the sense of smell, you may think thathuman beings have powerful and well evolved sensory systems However, some animals have a sense
of smell that is far more powerful than ours Dogs, for example, have a sense of smell that is 40 times
Trang 36greater than a human's and can distinguish 220 kinds of smell. Some animals can even smell odors that are undetectable by the human nose such as carbon dioxide (31) There are also animals that
have a relatively weak sense of smell For example, there are species of beetles that can recognize theodors of certain plants but not others
The bee is an interesting example to examine in reference to smell because they experience thissense via their antennae Bumblebees have stings but it's rare that they actually use this weapon
When a bee feels threatened, it will use its legs to signal and warn others (32) about the threat
before it stings This is called a signaling posture and involves the bee lifting its two back legs into theair
Within any hive, there is a hierarchy with the queen bee at the top The queen bee is able to control
the colony by monitoring its movement through her feet (33) The Queen Bee is the only
reproductive female in the entire colony and she is also able to sting multiple times, unlike the work
of bees that will die if they sting In the insect world, scent can also be used to facilitate matingas females decide whether or not to mate with a male depending on the quality of his scent One such example of this is the female butterfly (34) who will only mate with the male butterfly that produces
the strongest pheromones This is how the species ensures that only the best genes are perpetuated
in order to create the strongest offspring
Next, we move onto the hearing sense of beetles.Interestingly, beetles do not have ears but instead use their feet to detect vibrations caused by sound (35) This is particularly useful when searching for
food among the trees in which they live.As they are able to detect the location and movement of their prey by monitoring vibrations in the woodland (36).
The final sense that we'll be looking at today is sight.Snakes are a particularly interesting case study
as they do not see shapes and colors as humans do but instead hunt their prey by detecting the heat radiating from their mouths (37) This makes them incredibly effective predators as they are
able to zero in on their prey very quickly and efficiently From a distance, the snake is able to locate the heat radiating from a mouse for example and upon moving closer we'll be able to determine its body shape (38) This can help prevent the snake from attempting to attack prey that is too large for
it Once a snake has killed and eatenits prey it goes into a state of hibernation whereby all of its energy is directed towards digesting the food stored in its stomach (39) Depending on the size of
the snake and its prey, this hibernation can last from hours to days Once fully fed a large snake willnot need to eat again for the next couple of weeks during the breeding season However femalesnakes will feed more frequently
The heat detection of a snake is very complex and can be even more effective than division of ahuman It not only uses heat to determine the location of its prey, but before it commits to hunt it will also use the heat to calculate how much distance it has to travel in order to reach it (40) This
prevents the snake from wasting energy hunting prey that is too far away to catch
Trang 37That is the end of Section 4 You now have half a minute to check your answers That is the end of the listening test In the IELTS test you will now have 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the answer sheet.

Section 1
You will hear 2 students Jack and Amy discussing the details of the concerts that they are planning to hold First you have some time to look at questions 1 to 5 You will see there is an example that has been done for you on this occasion only the conversation relating to this will be played first.
Oh hi Jack Thank you for coming to discuss the details of the concert It's a real help
No problem Amy I'm looking forward to throwing some ideas around Shall we order coffee before
we begin?
Yes I'll have a cappuccino please Right First on the agenda is deciding who the intended audience isbecause we'll obviously have to base our choice of music on this
The thing to do before they start is order coffee So coffee has been written in the space.
Now we shall begin You should answer the questions as you listen because you will not hear the recording a second time.
Listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 5.
Oh hi Jack Thank you for coming to discuss the details of the concert It's a real help
No problem Amy I'm looking forward to throwing some ideas around Shall we order coffee before

Yes, I'll have a cappuccino please
Right First on the agenda is deciding who the intended audience is, because we'll obviously have tobase our choice of music on this
Classical concerts are held all the time But I'd really like to do something different and make it special. What do you think about holding it outside?
I like the idea but the weather is too unpredictable. What if we host the concert for children? (1) We
could make it more lighthearted and everyone could dress up in costume
What a wonderful idea We could host the event every afternoon so that children can attend afterschool How much do you think we should charge?
I don't think we should charge more than five dollars for the student tickets
No, I think that four dollars will be a fair price (2) We can charge adults a little bit more I'd say that
6.50 is suitable
Okay great That should hopefully cover the costs of running the event The local press will be inattendance to take photographs to print in the newspaper, so we'll also need to organize a press tent. It's also exciting. There will also be a representative from the local radio station broadcasting live (3),
then predicting is that over a thousand people will tune in to listen
Now that we're agreed Let's move on to discuss our other more sophisticated concert where we'll behosting a number of well-known opera performers
Trang 39As the majority of people will be at work during the day I suggest that the concert takes place in thelate afternoon or evening, which is do you think?
I think we should definitely hold an evening concert (4) The darkness will make the entire
performance more dramatic
Yes that will be fantastic Let's host the event on Friday when everyone can wind down after finishing
a week of work It'll be a lovely start to the weekend
As it will be a lavish and elegant event, I think we should set quite a high entrance fee of around 40dollars It'll give us some extra money to spend on decorations
That sounds fair.Instead of using chandeliers and electric lights we should decorate the marquee with candles instead (5) It would be so romantic.
I think that the venue is already booked on Monday but Tuesday will do nicely (6) How much do
you think we should charge the audience for tickets since the performers are not professionals?Perhaps we should make this a free event
Yes tickets will be free but we should ask everyone for a donation (7) so that we can cover the costs
of the venue and food and drink
The venue also comes complete with a piano, so hopefully one of the performers will be able to play (8) I had lessons when I was younger but I'm not accomplished enough to perform in front of an
Oh wow that sounds brilliant Well I think we've addressed the details for all of the concerts
Thank you so much for helping See you later
Trang 40That is the end of Section 1 You now have half a minute to check your answers Now turn to Section 2.
The most common type of wasted energy in the domestic environment is heat However, since thewalls of my home are very well insulated, I am lucky to have no issue with this I've discoveredhowever, that I waste a lot of water as a result of my lifestyle.I've researched ways to minimize my water usage online and have been pleasantly surprised to find that there are specialists in the area who can make some changes to my home immediately (11) The only downside is that the works are
quite expensive and there are no means of getting financial assistance Now if any of you listeners areinterested in reducing your energy usage Here are a couple of easy and positive changes you canmake immediately A lot of the magazines will recommend that you change your bulbs for those withenergy saving capabilities However, I have found that these make little difference to your electricitybills and they also severely reduce the light levels in your home.Instead simply switch off all plug sockets and appliances to make an immediate saving on your electricity consumption (12) If this
doesn't make enough of a saving for you, you could later try turning down the thermostat as well.Despite the discount that my energy provider gave me for prompt payment, my monthly bills werevery expensive for the amount of energy that I was using So I decided to change providers Not onlydid I make a huge monthly saving but the company also offered me other perks I am now able to pay
my monthly bills online, for example, which I am thrilled about because it means that I no longer have to drive to the bank (13) Once I have been a customer with them for a year, they will also offer
a deduction for all of the energy saving appliances I use Now many of you will have an electricitymeter at home, so I'm sure you'll all understand the issues associated with them They occupy a lot ofspace in your home and can be unsightly if you're unable to tuck them away in a cupboard Mine isquite large as it measures both my gas and electricity, but I was luckily able to hide it in the coatcupboard where I can keep it hidden but also access it easily.Having said that, whenever I have to take a meter reading, I have to use a torch because the screen is too dark to read the numbers correctly (14) I have recently had an extension built on my house to make room for a new bathroom
complete with a low energy boiler so I can take long showers guilt free The walls are nice and thickand well insulated butunfortunately the window is a little drafty so I'm going to have to invest in upgrading it (15) Speaking of renewable energy, I initially considered installing solar panels on the
roof instead of using a low energy boiler, which was the less expensive option. In the end, I decided
