Choosing a college: Factors to consider

1 LOCATION

○ Do you want to be close to home or within driving distance?

○ Do you want to live in an urban or more rural area?

○ Do you want to live out of state, or even out of the country?

2 SCHOOL FEATURES

○ How many students attend and what is the average class size?

○ What facilities and student centers do they have on campus (i.e library, resource centers, mental wellness centers, etc)

○ What is something unique about the school that you find attractive?

3 MAJORS AND PROGRAMS

○ What are you interested in studying and do they offer that?

○ Is that major impacted or more challenging to get admitted?

○ What opportunities does the school offer students in those programs, whether in academics or extracurriculars?

4 COST OF LIVING AND TUITION

○ What is the cost of tuition, room and board, and other student fees?

○ What would it cost to live off-campus in the location of your dream school?

5 FINANCIAL AID, SCHOLARSHIP, AND WORK STUDY OPTIONS

○ Does the school offer need-based and/or merit-based scholarships, work study, or other financial assistance?
