Tony Patino Fellow-Elect The Tony Patino Fellowship was created to support those individuals whose

personal and academic histories show leadership, academic achievement,

ethical and honorable conduct, good moral character, dedication to humane

values, participation in public service activities, well-adjusted personality, and

good judgment The Fellowship provides educational and living expenses and

is renewable for two subsequent consecutive academic years based upon the

fellow-elect's personal and academic performance and his or her participation

in the legal profession Upon receiving the two renewals of fellowship, the

final approval of the renewal committee, and a Juris Doctor degree, the fellow-

Sheila James Kuehl

Sheila James Kuehl, now in her third legislative term in the California State Assembly, is the chair of the Assembly Judiciary Committee In the 1997-98 session she was the first woman in California history to be named speaker pro tempore of that body She is also the first openly gay or lesbian person to

be elected to the California Legislature A former pioneering civil rights attorney and law professor, Ms Kuehl represents the 41st Assembly District

in Los Angeles County and serves on the Appropriations, Health, and Water Parks & Wildlife Committees as well as the Joint Committee on the Arts She

is the chair of the Select Committee on Entertainment and the Arts She is the chair of the Committee on the San Gabriel Valley Groundwater Contamination and currently serves on the Judicial Council of California and the California Coastal Conservancy.

During her first two terms in the Assembly, Ms Kuehl authored 38 bills that were signed into law to further protect domestic violence victims and their children, tighten child support enforcement, prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender in the workplace and in education, increase the rights of crime victims, safeguard the environment, and fund after school programs for at-risk youth At the invitation of President Clinton, she addressed the

1996 Democratic National Convention on the issue of family violence In 1996

George magazine selected her as one of the 20 most fascinating women in politics and the California Journal named her “Rookie of the Year." In 1998 the

California journal ballot taken among legislators, the press, legislative staff and lobbyists chose her as the most intelligent Assembly member as well as the member with the greatest integrity.

Prior to her election to the Assembly, Ms Kuehl drafted and fought to get into California law more than 40 pieces of legislation relating to children, families, women, and domestic violence She was a law professor at Loyola, UCLA, and USC Law Schools and co-founded and served as managing attorney of the California Women's Law Center She also served as president

of the Women Lawyers' Association of Los Angeles and as a member of the California Supreme Court's Advisory Committee on Gender Bias in the Courts She has trained judges, prosecutors, law enforcement officers, and women's advocates across the nation on domestic violence issues.

Ms Kuehl graduated from Harvard Law School in 1978 where she was the second woman in the school's history to win the Moot Court competition She is currently a member of the Harvard University Board of Overseers.

In her youth, she was known for her portrayal of the irrepressible Zelda Gilroy in the television series, “The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis."

Caps and Gowns—An Explanation

In the medieval city, clothing not unlike that worn by the participants in this

commencement ceremony was common The modem academic costume has

evolved from the dress of the medieval guilds and the early religious orders

Today, anyone with a college or university degree may wear the black aca

demic gown The hood, which is placed on the graduate by a member of the

faculty during the ceremony, indicates the doctoral level degree Placement of

the hood by a member of the faculty gives recognition of the academic accom

plishment, and welcomes the graduate to the fraternity of professionals At the

University of California, Hastings College of the Law, the lining of the hood

has a blue chevron on a gold ground to represent the university colors A

Hastings faculty member who holds a degree from another college or univer

sity wears the colors of that school The velvet edging on hoods is the color

which represents the subject in which the degree was earned by the wearer

Purple is Law The Doctor's costume also has velvet trim on the gown, includ

ing cross bars on the sleeve The trimming may be black or may match the

color of the hood edging The tassel is on the left side of the cap indicating an

advanced degree.
