History of UNC Charlotte

Background UNC Charlotte is one of a generation of universities founded in

metropolitan areas of the United States immediately after World War II in response to rising education demands generated by the war and its

returning war veterans but also for many high school graduates who could not go away to college

Continued on next page

Trang 14

History of UNC Charlotte, Continued

Evolution In 1949, with the support of a cadre of community leaders, Bonnie Cone

sparked the Charlotte Center's conversion into Charlotte College, a year institution financed by city taxpayers and supervised by the Charlotte Board of Education It was a pioneering move that later resulted in athletic teams at UNC Charlotte being named the '49ers

two-As soon as Charlotte College was firmly established, efforts were launched

to give it a campus of its own With the backing of Charlotte business leaders and legislators from Mecklenburg and surrounding counties, land was acquired on the northern fringe of the city and bonds were passed to finance new facilities In 1961, Charlotte College moved its growing student body into two new buildings on what was to become a 1,000-acre campus 10 miles from downtown

Trang 15

Mission, Goals and Objectives of UNC Charlotte, 2011-2016

Introduction The UNC Charlotte Institutional Plan is revised every two years The

2011-2016 Plan serves as the guiding force for decisions concerning the work of the University’s five divisions, including the number and direction

of our academic programs, the work of our faculty and support staff, and the allocation of resources across campus The Plan includes the

University’s Mission Statement and is designed to capture the most important initiatives and priorities of the constituent units and programs of the University; and to place them within the context of a set of overarching goals and values for the campus as a whole

Institutional

Plan Link

To read the complete Plan, visit:

http://chancellor.uncc.edu/sites/chancellor.uncc.edu/files/media/Institutional-Plan-2011-16-Revised-for-2013.pdf

Purpose The Plan is not meant to serve as a rigid or inflexible document that will

preclude the pursuit of new opportunities that may arise as a result of new circumstances or changes in the assumptions that have driven its

development Thus, while the Plan defines our primary priorities for the immediate future, we must keep an eye on an array of new opportunities and be prepared to act upon them as circumstances demand

Mission of
