Trang 41 OVERVIEW OF DISEASES
Disease, in medicine, is any state in which the health of the
human organism is impaired All diseases involve a breakdown
of the body's natural defense systems or those regulating theinternal environment Even when a cause is not known, adisease can almost always be understood in terms of the
physiological or mental processes that are disrupted.

Trang 13WHAT DO YOU KNOW
ABOUT EM?
3 A FOUNDATION OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE
Trang 14Emergency Medicine (EM) is a medical specialty - a field of
practice based on the knowledge and skills required for the
prevention, diagnosis and management of acute and urgent
aspects of illness and injury affecting patients of all age groupswith a full spectrum of undifferentiated physical andbehavioral disorders It further encompasses an understanding
of the development of pre-hospital and in-hospital emergency
medical systems and the skills necessary for this development
3 A FOUNDATION OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE
Trang 15The field of EM encompasses care involving the acute care of internal medical and surgical conditions In many modern emergency departments, Emergency physicians are tasked with seeing a large number of patients,
treating their illnesses and arranging for disposition - either admitting them to the hospital or releasing them after treatment as necessary.
The emergency physician requires a broad field of knowledge and advanced procedural skills often including surgical procedures, trauma resuscitation, advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) and advanced airway
management They must have the skills of many specialists - the ability to
resuscitate a patient, manage a difficult airway, suture a complex laceration, reduce (set) a fractured bone or dislocated joint, treat a heart attack, manage strokes, work-up a pregnant patient with vaginal bleeding, to conduct and interpret x-rays and ultrasounds.

Trang 36TRANSLATION PRACTICE
“Disease is an enemy that must be feared, fought, battled, and routed The patient or the healthcare provider is a warrior, rather than a passive victim or bystander The agents of communicable diseases are invaders; non-communicable diseases constitute internal insurrection or civil war Because the threat is urgent, perhaps a matter of life and death, unthinkably radical, even oppressive, measures are society's and the patient's moral duty as they courageously mobilize to struggle against destruction.”
“The alcoholic is enslaved by drink, and the smoker is captive to nicotine.”
