As the print carriage drives the system across the stencil, the constant system pressure and the enclosed design of the transfer head ensures minimum wastage and maximum environmental protection of the print medium

The detachable transfer head is available in both 300mm or 400mm

configurations; this provides effective coverage for different sized substrates,

as well as optimal print medium application

System Pressure The System Pressure is a programmable parameter that controls the contact

pressure of the transfer head against the stencil As the transfer head moves across the surface of the stencil, it must have enough downwards pressure to:

• Ensure that the side skis and wipers provide the enclosed environment which prevents any print medium leakage

• Allow the trailing wiper to remove the excess print medium from the surface

of the stencil during printing

The system pressure is maintained by a Z-axis stepper motor which lowers and raises the ProFlow ATx system Based on a preset parameter, the motor turns a leadscrew that precisely positions the transfer head’s wipers and skis against the stencil

NOTE

It is important for the transfer head to be aligned correctly as the system pressure is directed down through the centre of the transfer head.

Print Medium

Pressure

Two pneumatically driven print medium pressure pistons are located on top of the transfer head; during conditioning and printing these pistons exert an even downwards force on the crosshead piston

As it presses down on the print medium, the seal on the crosshead printer flares out creating a pressurised environment within the conditioning chamber This flaring prevents any print medium from leaking past the seal

During the procedure, the print rails remain raised to support the transfer head, and system pressure is applied to the ProFlow ATx system to prevent any leakage The print medium pressure is reversed, which raises the crosshead piston and creates a void in the conditioning chamber

Pneumatic pressure is applied to the print medium cartridge to drive print medium to the head of the Archimedes screw which rotates for the pre-programmed amount of revolutions These actions deliver the print medium into the conditioning chamber, and the rotating conditioning grid prepares and distributes the print medium ready for application

Trang 8

Figure 13-8 Transfer Head Unit Status During Charging Action

Next, the Archimedes screw and conditioning grid stop rotating, the system pressure is relaxed, and print medium idle pressure is applied

The system is now ready to resume the print cycle

NOTE Charging and recharging the transfer head is an automatic process and requires no intervention from the machine operator.

Transfer Head

Covers

The ProFlow ATx system ships with two cover options for the transfer head:

• Base Cover - Protects the wiper blades, skis and print medium during prolonged storage (more than one hour)

• Protective Cover - Provides protection to the wiper blades, skis and the operator during short-term operations, including fitting and removal

ADJUSTMENTS & SETTINGS

ADJUSTMENTS & SETTINGS

The transfer head fits between the and left hand and right hand mount brackets, which feature two spring-release thumbscrews

To adjust the mounts, carry out the following:

1 Turn the thumbscrew anti-clockwise until the thread is clear of the screw hole

2 Pull the thumbscrew away from the mount beam

3 Slide the mount bracket left or right along the mount beam until its position matches the width of the transfer head to be fitted

4 Release the thumbscrew so the thread engages in the screw hole

5 Turn the thumbscrew clockwise to secure the mount to the mount beam

NOTE

A size guide can be found on the left side of the mount assembly beam For more information on setting the transfer head size on the mount, see the section Replacement Procedures, Fitting the Transfer Head.

Adjusting the

Stencil Support

When the adjustable stencil support is in the closed position it is set 81mm; this dimension matches the height of the magnetic tooling pins To provide support for the stencil, the stencil support height must be increased by the thickness of the circuit board

To set the stencil support to the correct height, carry out the following:

1 Loosen the 7mm hexagonal securing nut

2 Slide the adjustable tooling top upwards to separate the tooling top from the tooling bottom

3 Position two of the circuit boards to be printed between the top and bottom faces of the stencil support

4 Readjust the tooling stencil support

5 Tighten the 7mm nut to secure the tooling top and bottom in position

6 Remove the two circuit boards

The support is now set to 81mm, plus the thickness of circuit board

NOTE For further information, refer to the Board Support Tooling chapter of the printer’s Technical Reference Manual.

ADJUSTMENTS & SETTINGS

To configure the print medium low sensor beam, carry out the following:

1 Cut a view port into an empty print medium cartridge

2 Fit the empty print medium cartridge into the ProFlow ATx mount For more information on fitting a print medium cartridge, see Fitting the Print Medium Cartridge section of this manual

ADJUSTMENTS & SETTINGS

4 If required, adjust the LED sensor to centralise the LED beam on the print medium cartridge’s end plate:

5 If the LED beam appears above or below the Y plane, loosen the two Y plane adjustment screws using a 3mm Allen key and a 7mm spanner

6 Adjust the sensor until the LED beam sits on the Y plane

7 Tighten the Y plane adjustment screws

9 Adjust the sensor until LED beam sits on the Z plane

10 Tighten the Z plane adjustment screws

Configuring the

Print Medium

Demand Sensor

The print medium demand sensor detects when the level of the print medium

in the transfer head is low For an accurate reading, the bottom of the sensor must be positioned no more than 5mm (+/- 1mm) above the transfer head’s top plate

To adjust the height of the print medium demand sensor, carry out the following:

1 Loosen the screw on the print medium demand sensor, using a jeweller’s flat head screwdriver

2 Adjust the bottom edge of the demand sensor so that it sits 5mm (+/- 1mm) above the level of the transfer head’s top plate

3 Tighten the screw on the print medium demand sensor, using the jeweller’s flat head screwdriver

Trang 21

The base cover option is used for prolonged storage of the transfer head It protects the wiper blades and skis from damage, and protects the print medium from environment To fit the base cover, carry out the following:

1 Loosen the right hand side retaining screw and ease the dowelled side plate away from the base-plate of the cover; do not fully remove the side plate

2 Fit the base cover to the transfer head:

a Fit the left side of the base cover over the transfer head’s left hand side locator dowel

b Fit the right side of the base cover to the transfer head’s right hand side locator dowel

NOTE Apply pressure to squeeze the transfer head’s wiper blades and the base cover together; this action eases the fitting process.

3 Tighten the base cover’s retaining screw to secure the right side plate firmly against the transfer head cover.

Separating the Base

Cover

To separate the base cover from the transfer head, carry out the following:

1 Loosen the retaining screw on the right hand side of the base cover; do not fully remove the screw

2 Pull the right hand end plate of the base cover away from the transfer head, but do not fully remove it; ensure the top of the right hand locator dowel remains tight against the base cover’s end plate

3 Slide the transfer head out of the base cover

NOTE

It is important to keep base cover’s right hand end plate in place This keeps the wiper blades in contract with the base cover; this action prevents the print medium from smearing during the separation process

Trang 23

1 Ensure the two locking clips on the protective cover are unlocked; they should be loose.

2 Fit the protective cover to the transfer head by inserting the locking pins into the two protective cover mounts located on the top of the transfer head

3 Flip the locking clips upwards to lock the protective cover in place

Do not unlock the locking pins prior to separation This keeps the wiper blades

in contract with the protective cover; this action prevents the print medium from smearing during the separation process.
