Diagnostic Switches

Use the switches listed in this section for diagnostic purposes

Some, like the /Safe switches, disable features when you start Outlook Use these

switches to troubleshoot problems

Other switches, such as /CleanFinders, delete or clean up various settings or items and give you a fresh slate You'll use these switches when a specific feature doesn't work correctly, including when your reminders don't fire, your rules don't work, and so on

Use the clean switches with caution In some cases, they delete your

customizations, including the clean rules and clean views switches

Others, like the clean reminder switch, are safe to use because they

clean items that Outlook re-creates

The final switches in this group are those that reset Outlook to use default settings,

including ResetNavPane, which removes all of your shortcuts from the Navigation bar and resets the buttons to their original positions

• /CheckClient— Prompts for the default manager of email, news, and contacts Use

this when another email client is set to default and Outlook doesn't ask whether it should be the default

• /CleanClientRules— Starts Outlook and deletes client-based rules Works with all mail account types

• /CleanDmRecords— Deletes the logging records saved when a manager or a

delegate declines a meeting (Exchange Server only)

• /CleanFinders— Removes Search Folders from the Microsoft Exchange Server

store

• /CleanFreeBusy— Clears and regenerates free/busy information This switch can

be used only when you're able to connect to your Microsoft Exchange server

• /CleanProfile— Removes invalid profile keys and re-creates default Registry keys

where applicable

• /CleanPST— Launches Outlook with a new Personal Folders file (.pst) The

existing PST is not affected; it's just replaced in the profile for one use

• /CleanReminders— Clears and regenerates reminders

• /CleanRules— Starts Outlook and deletes client- and server-based rules Use with

care—this switch deletes all existing rules

• /CleanSchedPlus— Deletes all Schedule+ data (free/busy, permissions, and cal

file) from the server and enables the free/busy information from the Outlook

calendar to be used and viewed by all Schedule+ 1.0 users

• /CleanServerRules— Starts Outlook and deletes server-based rules (Exchange

Server only) Use with care—this switch deletes server-based rules

• /CleanSniff— Deletes duplicate reminder messages

• /CleanSubscriptions— Deletes the subscription messages and properties for

subscription features

• /CleanViews— Restores default views Use with caution; this switch deletes all

custom views you created Use with care—this switch deletes all views, including any custom views you've created

• /ImportPRF prffilename— Launches Outlook and opens/imports the defined

MAPI profile (*.prf) If Outlook is already open when you run the command, the new profile is imported on the next clean launch

• /NoCustomize— Starts Outlook without loading outcmd.dat (customized toolbars)

and *.fav files Use this to troubleshoot problems when Outlook hangs or crashes when you first start it If Outlook loads using this switch, delete outcmd.dat

• /NoExtensions— Starts Outlook with extensions turned off, but listed in the

Add-In Manager

• /ResetFolderNames— Resets default folder names (such as Inbox and Sent Items)

to the default names in the current Office user interface language This is used when you connect to an Exchange Server which uses a language different from your Office installation

• /ResetFolders— Restores missing folders for the default delivery location Use

this switch if you use OWA to access your mailbox and accidentally delete a folder

• /ResetNavPane— Clears and regenerates the Navigation Pane for the current

profile All shortcuts on the shortcut bar are deleted

• /Safe— Starts Outlook without extensions, Reading Pane, or toolbar

customization

• /Safe:1— Starts Outlook with the Reading Pane off Use this if you have a

message in the inbox selected and it causes Outlook to hang or crash

• /Safe:2— Starts Outlook without checking mail at startup Use when you don't want Outlook to check for new email, but don't want to disable automatic checking

in Tools, Send/Receive

• /Safe:3— Starts Outlook with extensions turned off, but listed in the Add-In

Manager

• /Safe:4— Starts Outlook without loading Outcmd.dat (customized toolbars) and

*.fav files
