14 Questions

Directions: For each question in this section, select the best answer from among the choices given and fill in the corresponding oval on the answer sheet.

The following sentences test correctness and effectiveness of expression. Part of each sentence or the entire sentence is underlined; beneath each sentence are five ways of phrasing the underlined material. Choice (A) repeats the original phrasing; the other four choices are different. If you think the original phrasing produces a better sentence than any of the alternatives, select choice (A); if not, select one of the other choices.

In making your selection, follow the requirements of standard written English; that is, pay attention to grammar, choice of words, sentence construction, and punctuation. Your selection should result in the most effective sentence-clear and precise, without awkwardness or ambiguity.

S ECTION l 6 Score Essay

If I had been asked this question a month ago, I would have said, "Of course, failure is possible." Whenever we embark on a project, we have a picture in our minds of what the

"successful" result will be. And, if things don't turn out that way, we usually define the attempt as a failure. The answer seems obvious and simple, right?

Maybe not.

All my life, I have wanted to become a writer. For my birthday last year, my best friend gave me a book called No Plot? No Problem. The premise of this book is that you can write a novel in one month. I read the entire book, cover to cover, in one night, and was convinced there was no way I would not succeed. All you have to write is 1 ,667 words a day and, at the end of one month, you will have a novel approximately the length of The Great Gatsby. This didn't seem like an excessive amount of writing to me-I probably write than many words in e-mails to my friends every night, anyway.

For the first week I met, and even exceeded, my daily writing quota. My story, which was about a young girl who didn't get into any of her first-choice colleges and thought her life was over until she met the love of her life at a community college, was going very well. I had a large amount of interesting writing. F. Scott Fitzgerald, watch out!

Then, all of a sudden I hit the wall. A big wall. I couldn't think of 67 words to write, let alone 1 ,667. My story, which I had loved, became a symbol to me of the fact that I would probably never achieve my dream of writing professionally. I had "failed" to complete a novel in thirty days.

About six weeks ago, however, I saw an ad in the newspaper for a summer course at a college nearby. The course, which is called "Discovering Your Inner Writer," is being taught by members of the college's creative writing faculty, and is open to all ages. To apply, you had to submit five pages of original writing. I submitted the first five pages of my "failed" novel, and I got accepted into the class!

So, yes, I "failed" to complete my novel in the time frame I had set for myself. But this "failure" has resulted in my getting into a class that may benefit my future as a writer, even more than finishing that novel would have. My "failure"

turned into a very exciting success! It is impossible to fail, I now know, because each and every event that happens has the possibility of opening a new and interesting door that you might not have even considered!

6 Score Critique

All essays are evaluated on four criteria : Topic, Support, Organization, and Language. This essay answers the question posed by the prompt, and it does so in a very interesting way. The writer states that, had she been asked the question a month ago, her answer to the question would have been different. Clearly, her essay is going to let us know what happened to change her mind. This piques the reader's interest right away.

The support offered consists of only one anecdote, but it is extremely well developed. The writer takes us chronologically through her experience trying to write a novel, her initial feeling that she "failed," and how that failure turned into a success. She then sums up her message with a closing statement that wraps up the essay nicely. This indicates that she spent sufficient time on her plan before she began to produce her essay.

In addition, her sentence structure is varied and interesting.

The language is strong with some good SAT-level

vocabulary (embark, premise, excessive, quota), and there are no errors in grammar or usage. This indicates that the writer took time to proofread her work.

4 Score Essay

I think it is possible to fail if you do not take your failure and learn something from it. This way there is something touchable you can show from your "failure," and so you have not really failed because you have something to show.

For example, if you failed English then, yes, that is a failure.

But if you then go to Summer School and take English again, learn alot, and get a good grade, you haven't really failed, you just took a little longer to get there than most people.

If, however, you fail English and you decide "I just can't do this" and decide to drop out rather than even trying to fix your original failure then, yes, you failed. You failed because you didn't use that set back to better yourself, you just gave up.

Another example is on the television show "American Idol,"

where, even though there is only one winner at the end, a lot of the people who didn't win (i.e. failed) have turned that failure into success. Even William Hung, who was a terrible singer on the show, now has a commercial on for

"Ask Jeeves." So this guy's failure at one thing resulted in success at another. No one would consider him a failure.

His name is known all over the country.

Another example of a person turning around a failure is my brother Christopher, who takes Tai Kwon Do. He has taken it ever since he was five, and he has always passed every color belt the first time he took it. Then, two years ago, he dislocated his shoulder. He wasn't supposed to do his belt testing, but he did it anyway, and he didn't make it because his body hurt too much. He was upset that all of the kids who had been in his class since the beginning moved up a belt, but he stayed the same. For a while, he even quite Tai Kwon Do. But he missed it too much so he went back. He's in a class with new kids and he got his red belt ultimately.

So you can't really call that a failure either. He just took more time then the others.

4 Score Critique

All essays are evaluated on four basic criteria : Topic, Support, Organization, and Language. With better time management to allow for more development of examples, a less abrupt ending, and some proofreading, this essay might have received a 5 or even a 6.

This writer clearly understands the prompt and takes a position on the question presented in the first paragraph.

He even presents three examples relevant to the prompt.

However, none of his examples is sufficiently well developed. The organization of the essay is adequate, indicating that the writer took some time to plan before beginning to produce his writing. There is also some use of fluid transitions between ideas, but they are basic and repetitive (For example, Another example, Another example). The essay also ends too abruptly; it seems that the writer ran out of time before he could formulate a concluding paragraph.

There are a number of sentence fragments and run-on sentences, some spelling errors (alot for a Jot, quite for quit), and some slang (guy's, kids). This writer needs to save time to proofread his work. Fixing basic spelling, grammar, and sentence structure errors is an easy way to bump your essay score up at least one point.

2 Score Essay

Susan B. Anthony said that "Failure is impossible" and I agree with it, very much so. Because you might fail at something, like getting a good SAT score, but you can take it again if that happens and study harder this time. The only real failure is stopping before you have accomplished what it is you set out to do.

This is exactly what happened to me when I tried out for cheerleading first semester my freshman year and I didn't make it. I was really really disappointed that I failed to make the squad, but I decided to improve my skills so I could show them I could do it. So I took gymnastics and went to a cheerleading camp over the summer. Sophomore year, I tried out again and this time I made it. Two of my best friends who tried out with me freshman year and also didn't make it didn't try out again. But to me, it's not like they failed. To me, they quit, not failed.

I guess what the Susan B. Anthony quotation means to me is that you can use your failures to spur you on to future success, or you can choose to just give up like my friends did. I choose not to give up, so for me, "Failure is impossible."

2 Score Critique

All essays are evaluated on four criteria: Topic, Support, Organization, and Language. This essay does address the prompt, but it is too brief and undeveloped to earn a higher score.

Only two examples are offered in support of the writer's position (an SAT score and the cheerleading squad), neither of which is adequately developed. Several more examples would be needed, unless the cheerleader story was explored in much greater detail.

This essay shows adequate organization, as far as it goes, indicating that the writer spent at least some time developing a plan before producing her essay. The first paragraph serves as an introduction, the second presents the example, and the third is a conclusion. However, the essay does little to develop the writer's ideas.

The vocabulary is unsophisticated, and the writer repeatedly uses the pronoun it without a clear antecedent. Her sentence structure is also shoddy. There are several sentence fragments, and some sentences use incorrect grammatical structure. As do all SAT takers, this writer needs to save time to proofread her essay before turning it in.
