How many ways are there to pronounce V–ed? What are they?

There are three ways to pronounce V–ed.

 We say /t/ after voiceless consonant sounds: /p/, /s/, /k/, /f/, /ʃ/, /tʃ/, /θ/

Example: popped /papt/; talked /takt/; frothed /frawθt/; laughed /læft/; kissed /kIst/;

brushed /bruʃt/; reached /riytʃt/

 We say /d/ after voiced consonant sounds: /b/, /g/, /l/, /z/, /v/, /dʒ/, /ð/, /r/, /m/, /n/, /ŋ/ and all vowel sounds.

Example: bobbed /babd/; begged /bɛgd/; breathed /briyðd/; loved /luvd/; raised /reyzd/;

bridged /brIdʒd/; claimed /kleymd/; banned /bænd/; banged /bæŋd/; cleared /kliyrd/; rolled /rowld/

 We say /id/ after the following sounds: /t/ and /d/

Example: edited /ɛdɪtɪd/; ended /ɛndɪd/

How many ways are there to pronounce the words ending with “es” or “s”? What are they?

There are three ways to pronounce the words ending with “es” or “s”

 Word ends with sound /s, z, ʃ, Ʒ, tʃ, ʤ/ + s, es → read /iz/

Example: kisses /kisiz/; causes /kɔ:ziz/; washes /wɔtʃiz/; changes /tʃeindʤ/

 Word ends with voicedless sound /p, f, t, θ, k/ + s,es → read /s/

Example: caps /kæps/; safes /seifs/; smiths /smiθs/; hats /hæts/; books /buks/

 The remaining cases (word ends with vowel a, e, o, u, i or voiced sound b, v, d ) + s,

es → read /z/

Example: arrives /ə'raivz/; employs /im'plɔi/; sees /si:z/
