Describing trends in Writing Task 1

I Một số từ vựng miểu tả xu hướng :

- Xu hướng tăng :

+ Verbs : increase (B) , rise, climb, grow , go up (B) , rocket , soar ,…

Note : “rocket , soar” are used for “ sudden increasing”

+ Nouns : increase , rise, growth, upward trend

- Xu hướng giảm :

+ Verbs : decrease (B) , fall, drop (sụt giảm ), decline (A) , plummet , plunge ,… Note : “Plummet, plunge” are used for “ sudden decrease”

+ Nouns : decrease , decline , drop , fall , downward trend ,…

- Duy trì ổn định :

+ Verbs : Remain/stay stable/unchanged/constant , maintain (duy trì ), stabilize (ổn định ) ,…

+ Nouns : stability , plateau

- Dao động :

+ Verbs : Fluctuate

+ Nouns : Fluctuation

- Đạt mức cao nhất :

+ Verbs : Hit the highest point , reach a peak ,

- Xuống mức thấp nhất :

+ Verbs : Hit the lowest point , hit a low , …

II Một số từ vựng mô tả mức độ của sự thay đổi :

- Thay đổi nhỏ, vừa :

+ Adj : slight , marginal ( ko đáng kể ) , moderate ( vừa phải )

+ Adv : slightly , marginally , moderately, …

- Thay đổi nhỏ trong một thời gian dài :

+ Adj : gradual , slow , steady , …

+ Adv : gradually (I) , slowly , steadily (A), consistently ,…

- Thay đổi lớn :

+ Adj : dramatic , significant , considerable , substantial ,……

+ Adv : dramatically , significantly, considerably, substantially ,…

- Thay đổi nhanh :

+ Adv : quickly , sharply ( đột ngột ) (B) , rapidly (A) ,…

III Sử dụng giới từ trong mô tả số liệu :

1) “AT”:

- Stand at + Số liệu : Đứng ở mức bao nhiêu (cố định )

EX : The crime rate stood at 5% in 2000

- Remain stable/the same at + Số liệu : Giữ nguyên tại mức

EX : The figure for rice export in Vietnam remained stable at $15 million in 2015

- To peak at + Số liệu : Đạt mức cao nhất là …

EX : The amount of electricity produced peaked at 10,000 units in 2000

2) “OF” :

- Reach a peak / Reach the highest point / Hit a low / Hit the lowest point + OF +

Số liệu :Đạt mức cao nhất / thấp nhất là …

- (n) : A/an + adj + Increase/… + of + Số liệu : Một sự tăng / giảm … ( sự chênh )

EX : There was an increase of 2,000 in the number of students after 2 years

3) “BY” :

- (v) increase / …… + by + Số liệu : Tăng thêm / giảm đi bao nhiêu ( sự chênh )

4) “TO” :

- (v) increase /…… + To + Số liệu : Tăng / giảm đến mức … ( Điểm cuối sl )

- (n) A/an + adj + increase/ … + to + Số liệu : 1 sự tăng/ giảm đến mức ( Điểm cuối sl )

Note : Ta có thể sử dụng kèm “from…to” với đầu và cuối sl

5) “AROUND/BETWEEN” :

- Fluctuate / A(an) + adj + Fluctuation + around + Số liệu : Biến động trong khoảng …

- Fluctuate / A(an) + adj + Fluctuation + between … + and + … : Biến động ở mức giữa … Và …

IV Một số cấu trúc mô tả sự thay đổi :

1) S + V + Adj + Number + Time period (B)

EX : The number of students increased significantly to 2,000 in 2016

2) There + be + a/an + adj + N + Number + in + “what” + complement + Time period

EX : There was a significant increase of 500 in the number of students in 2016 3) S + experience/see/witness + a/an + adj + N + Number + Time period

EX : The number of students witnessed a significant increase of 500 in 2016 4) a/an + adj + N + number + was seen/… + in S + Time period

EX : A significant increase of 500 was seen in the number of students in 2016 5) Time period (khoảng thời gian) + witnessed/saw + a/an + adj + noun + in + noun phrase

EX : The year 2016 witnessed a significant increase of 500 in the number of students

6) Before/ After + V-ing , S + V + adv

EX : After declining substantially from 800 to 250 , the number of students

rocketed to 980 in 2019

7) There was a/an + adj1 + N1 , followed by a/an + adj2 + N2

EX : There was a downward fluctuation in the amount of acid rain , followed by a steady decline

8) S + V(ed) + adv , V-ing , and then V(ed)

EX : The number of households that did not use cars substantially decreased from

90 to 20 million, hitting the lowest point in 2010 , but then slightly increased to 15 million during the last year

9) Starting at + Số liệu , S + V + adv

EX : Starting at 100 students in 2015, the number of students increased

significantly to reach a peak of 400 students in 2016

V Một số cấu trúc hữu dụng :

A Cấu trúc ngữ pháp so sánh thông thường :

1 So sánh bằng (Equality)

- Cấu trúc sử dụng: as … As :

+ Khẳng định (positive): S + V + as + adj/ adv+ as + N/pronoun

+ Phủ định (negative): S + V + not + so/as + adj/adv + N/Pronoun

EX : My car is as new as your car

You run as fast as Binn

- Cấu trúc sử dụng “the same as” : S1 + to be + the same + (noun) + as + S2

EX : My room is as wide as his = My room is the same width as his

Lưu ý : Sau “as” phải là một đại từ nhân xưng chủ ngữ, không được là một tân ngữ Note : - So sánh kém hơn tính/trạng từ:

S + V + less + adj/adv + than + noun/pronoun = S + V + not as + adj/adv + as + noun/pronoun

EX : This book is less interesting than that book

- So sánh kém hơn danh từ :

+ Danh từ đếm được (Countable noun):

S + V + fewer + plural noun + than + noun/pronoun

EX : I bought fewer cakes than my sister

+ Danh từ không đếm được (Uncountable noun):

S + V + less + uncountable noun + than + noun/pronoun/ clause

EX : I have less spare time than Hoa

2) So sánh hơn (Comparative)

- So sánh hơn với tính từ ngắn: Adj_er

Cấu trúc: S1 + to be + adj_er + than + S2

Lưu ý :

+ Các tính từ đuôi y khi chuyển sang dạng so sánh hơn: y -> ier

+ Các tính từ có đuôi với 3 chữ cái cuối dạng: phụ âm – nguyên âm – phụ âm -> nhân đôi phụ âm cuối trước khi thêm er (VD: big – bigger)

- So sánh hơn với tính từ dài: more + adj

Cấu trúc: S1 + to be + more adj + than + S2

VD: beautiful – more beautiful (Her dress is more beautiful than yours.)

3) So sánh nhất (Superlative)

- Tính/ trạng từ ngắn : S + V + the + adj/advngắn- est

- Tính/ trạng từ dài : S + V + the most + adj/advdài

B So sánh bội :

S + V + multiple numbers + as + much/ many/ adj/ adv + as + noun

EX : The coat costs three times as much as the other one

Note : twofold , threefold ,……… (adj/adv)

EX : A twofold increase : một sự tăng gấp đôi

C In comparison with sth/sb // Compared to + sb/sth : So với …

EX : In comparison with the numbers of girl students , ……

EX : The number of female students is more than ……

D As opposed to …… : thay vì

EX : The number of students increase to 5000 in 2005 as opposed to 700 in 1992

E While/Whilst/Whereas/Although/But ……

F In contrast / In comparison/ On the other hand

H Be in nearly the same with …… : Gần giống với ……

K While/Whilst … , the opposite was true for ……

N Lưu ý :

- The number of + Countable noun (plural)

- The amount of + Uncountable noun + V( số ít )

- The proportion of + Noun (countable or uncountable)

- The percentage of + Noun (countable or uncountable)

- The figure for + Noun (countable or uncountable)

- Paraphrase “about”(adv) = Approximately / Somewhere in the vicinity of

“about”(pre) : Concerning , in related to …., …

EX : The number of students was about 5000 in 2014

- Sử dụng một số từ viết câu mở đầu : reveal (bộc lộ, thể hiện), provide the

information for … , illustrate (minh hoạ) , show (B) ,……
