Network Access Switch

POPgate™ is an enhanced Internet network access switch for rapidly growing ISPs and telecom operators Combining a cost-effective hardware platform with innovative value-added applications, POPgate empowers service providers to easily offer differentiated services to their dial-up subscribers POPgate is a highly flexible solution that is easy to install, operate and maintain Thanks to POPgate, service providers can increase their revenues, build market share, and maximize network utilization.

Modular Architecture Delivers Superior Flexibility

POPgate consists of a carrier-class, industry-standard 19" x

6U rack-mounted chassis containing up to 21 ETSI-compliant

front-loaded modules Integrated modules include main

cards, interface cards, power supply modules, and up to 15

analog modem and ISDN cards POPgate's advanced modular

design enables easy scalability from a basic 30-port

configuration with a single E1 link (or 24-port with T1), up

to a 480-port configuration A single rack can house multiple

chassis and support over two thousand simultaneous

connections without any performance degradation POPgate's

enhanced design allows easy integration of emerging

capabilities and access technologies, as well as new high

density modules, preserving the service provider's investment

in the long run

High Reliability Minimizes Service Downtime

To maximize service uptime, all integrated POPgate modules

can be inserted or removed while the chassis remains live

and online This "hot swapping" capability ensures that the

replacement or addition of a single board does not necessitate

any interruption in service Incorporating modem redundancy

as well as power supply and main control back up, POPgate

is designed for high reliability with graceful service degradation

and no single point of failure

POPgate Deployment at the Point

of Presence (POP)

POPgate provides

cost-effective

access from the

PSTN to the

Internet, integrating

seamlessly with

industry-leading

routing and LAN

equipment as well

as emerging

services and

technologies.

Enhanced Database Integration Improves Functionality

Advanced integration with standard RADIUS servers enables enhanced capabilities including differentiated services, Virtual Private Networks (VPN) connectivity, and grade-of-service management Based on user-service profiles defined in a database, each connection can receive different attributes, enabling simultaneous provision of differentiated services from the same pool of resources at any POP on the network

Tight Radius Integration Enhances Security

POPgate's tight integration with RADIUS servers provides superior security and authentication for dial-up subsribers

by allowing access based on user name and password, caller

ID, called number, domain (realm), or any combination of these fields (simultaneously or sequentially) These flexible authentication capabilities allow service providers to use the most appropriate validation methods for their billing needs

Differentiated Services Build Market Share

POPgate utilizes caller parameters and user-service profiles

to enable service providers to offer a wide range of differentiated service packages to their customers A service provider can vary the level of service delivered to each and every subscriber (or user group) using a single pool of access

resources This capability enables the provider to manage

differentiated services simply and efficiently - without

expanding network infrastructure Offerings can be

differentiated by service applications or types (e.g full services,

registration only, e-mail only), level of service based on

bandwidth allocation (e.g broadband, narrowband), time

of day (e.g full day, evening only), and user-recognition

methods (e.g user name and password, Calling Line

Identification - CLI) POPgate also allows service providers

to offer Virtual Private Network (VPN) connectivity to

tele-commuting employees of business customers Thanks to

differentiated service offerings, ISPs and carriers can distinguish

themselves from their competitors, generate new revenue

streams, and increase their customer base (For more, see

separate sheet on Differentiated Services)

Built-in Management Enhances

System Performance

Each POPgate system comes with a built-in management

program that monitors and stores traffic reports, test results,

alarms, logs, and other historical and real-time status

information POPgate is compatible with industry-standard

network management systems, and can be managed by a

local PC using serial connection, a remote PC through Telnet,

and/or via a standard manager using SNMP

Value-Added Applications Increase Operator Revenues

POPgate integrates proprietary and third-party value-added

applications that help service providers substantially increase their revenues Sample

applications include:

. Internet Call Waiting: allows callers

to leave messages for, or speak with, online Internet users with a single telephone line

. Online Targeted Advertising and Messaging: allows Internet service

providers to place targeted adverts and messages on customized media banners on any Web page This enables the ISP to overcome the limitation of transparency to their customers, by promoting themselves, inserting information or adverts, and thus creating new sources of revenue

. Dedicated Internet Line:

enables service providers to offload traffic from telephony switches and reach new markets
