Before proceeding, ensure that both EndNote and Word are installed on your computer If EndNote is not yet installed, please refer to the instructions in Chapter 2 for guidance.
The guided tour utilizes sample files located in the Examples folder, which can be found in your computer's Shared Documents or Public Documents folder Alternatively, you can access it via a shortcut in the EndNote X3 program folder Among the example files is a sample EndNote reference library named Sample_Library_X3.
Part I: Introduction to an EndNote Library
This part of the guided tour covers the basics of working with EndNote In particular, you will learn how to:

If you have previously opened the compressed sample library, select Sample_Library_X3.enl and click Open.

The Library window includes three panes:
The Reference List pane presents a multi-column display of references, featuring a paper clip icon in the first column for entries with attached files in the File Attachments field Each reference includes key details such as the first author's last name, publication year, title, journal name or secondary title, reference type, URL, and the date of the last update.

2 For this example, click on the reference by “Allen” titled
“Bats: Biology, behavior, and folklore.”
The Preview tab showcases the selected reference formatted according to the current output style for bibliographies EndNote's output styles dictate the formatting rules for creating bibliographies tailored to various journals and publications, influencing how references appear during printing, exporting, previewing, or when generating bibliographies.
3 To select a different output style to apply to the reference, go to the toolbar and select Numbered from the drop-down list of output styles.
You can customize your output styles in EndNote by selecting your "favorite" styles from the list or choosing "Select Another Style" for additional options A standard installation includes the 100 most popular output styles, but EndNote offers over 3,700 styles to choose from, allowing for extensive personalization to meet your citation needs.
The Preview tab displays only one reference at a time, highlighting the active reference with a dotted line when multiple references are selected Users can easily change the format of the displayed reference by selecting a different output style at any moment.
When the Tab pane is showing, a Hide Tab Pane button is available at the bottom of the window You can click Hide Tab
Pane to hide the Preview tab if you wish The name of the button will toggle to Show Tab Pane.
References References can easily be sorted by clicking on a column heading
(such as Author, Year, or Title)
To change the sort order:
1 Click the Author column heading to change the current Author sort from ascending order to descending order.
EndNote utilizes Unicode to encode special characters, ensuring seamless data translation across various platforms, programs, and languages If you encounter boxes instead of characters, it's essential to change the EndNote display fonts to a Unicode font, which will be covered in the upcoming section, “Part II: Setting EndNote Preferences.” Additionally, for certain display elements, installing special Windows Language Packs may be necessary; refer to your Windows documentation for further guidance on Language Packs.
2 Click the Year column heading to see the references sorted in ascending order based on the year of publication.
3 Click the Year column heading again (a second time) to reverse the sort order and see the references sorted in descending order.
4 Now, click the Author column heading to return the sort order of the library to an alphabetical list sorted by the author names
To work with specific references you must first select them in the Library window.
