Mars has captured the imaginations of people since ancient times People have longwondered if the planet is home to alien life Over the years, a number of theoriesconcerning this matter have arisen

In the nineteenth century, there were finally telescopes made that could closely examine

at the surface of the Red Planet While looking at Mars, an Italian astronomer saw manystraight channels on its surface These were most likely caused by the action of either thewind or water in the distant past When he published his observations, he used the Italian

word canali, which means "channels" However, English-speaking astronomers

interpreted the word as "canals" and assumed that he was referring to something akin tomanmade canals on Earth

An American astronomer Percival Lowell, believed that these "canals" had been built by

a race of intelligent beings that had lived - and might still be living - on Mars The result

of that highly publicized claim was that a great number of myths about Mars suddenlyarose For instance, H G Wells wrote The War of the Worlds, a book about a Martianinvasion of Earth, in 1898 Over the next few decades, Mars and Martians featured incountless science fiction stories, movies, and TV shows

Years later, in the 1960s and 1970s, the United States sent several satellites to investigateMars more closely The satellites found no canals but one picture suddenly ignited a great deal of interest in Mars In 1976, Viking 1 took a snapshot of the Martian surface.

Trang 6

In the picture was what appeared to be an enormous human face It was so large that itmeasured more than three kilometers long This convinced people that there was - or hadbeen - intelligent life on Mars.

In 2001, however, the mystery of the Martian face was solved by Mars Global 30 Surveyor The pictures that it transmitted proved that the face was just a mesa, a type of

Almost every language in the world has dialects and American English is no exception

At the present time there is an interesting study which is on American speech habits Thisstudy has shown that different words are frequently used in different parts of the country

to denote the same thing For example, in the east, Americans use the word "soda" todenote a soft drink In some parts of the west, a soft drink is "tonic" Such differences areusually a source of conversation and sometimes misunderstanding happens

Speech and life all over the world have often changed New words are being used whennew discoveries are made and new concepts are formed Usage determines what iscorrect and what is incorrect Fifty years ago, it was incorrect to say "It's me." But today

Reading to oneself is a modern activity which was almost unknown to the scholars of theclassical and medieval worlds, while during the fifteenth century the term "reading"undoubtedly meant reading aloud Only during the nineteenth century did silent readingbecome common place One should be wary, however, of assuming that silent readingcame about simply because reading aloud was a distraction to others

Examinations of factors related to the historical development of silent reading reveals that

it became the usual mode of reading for most adults mainly because the tasks themselveschanged in character

The last century saw a steady gradual increase in literacy and thus in the number ofreaders As the number of readers increased, the number of potential listeners declinedand thus there was some reduction in the need to read aloud As reading for the benefit oflisteners grew less common, so came the flourishing of reading as a private activity insuch public places as libraries, railway carriages and offices, where reading aloud wouldcause distraction to other readers

Towards the end of the century, there was still considerable argument over whether booksshould be used for information or treated respectfully, and over whether the reading ofmaterials such as newspapers was in some way mentally weakening Indeed, thisargument remain with us still in education However, whatever its virtues, the old sharedliteracy culture had gone and was replaced by the printed mass media on the one handand by books and periodicals for a specialised readership on the other

Trang 31

By the end of the century, students was being recommended to adopt attitudes to booksand to use reading skills which was inappropriate, if not impossible, for the oral reader. The social, cultural and technological changes in the century had greatly altered what theterm "reading" implied.

28 Why was reading aloud common before the nineteenth century?

B There were few places available for private reading

C Few people could read for themselves

D People relied on reading for entertainment

29 The development of silent reading during the nineteenth century indicated

A A change in the status of literate people

B A change in the nature of reading

C An increase in the number of books

D An increase in the average age of readers

30 Educationalists are still arguing about

A The important of silent reading

B The amount of information yielded by books and newspaper

C The effects of reading on health

D The value of different types of reading materials

31 The emergence of the mass media and of specialised periodicals showed that

A Standards of literacy had declined

B Readers’ interests had diversified

C Printing techniques had improved

D Educationalists’ attitudes had changed

32 What is the writer of this passage attempting to do?

A Explain how present-day reading habits developed

B Change people’s attitudes to reading

Trang 32

C Show how reading methods have improved

D Encourage the growth of reading
