Unit 9: UNDERSEA WORLD

E.LANGUAGE FOCUS

1 Objectives:

By the end of the lesson, the Ss will be able to use Should and conditional type 2 appropriately

2 Teaching aids:

Textbook, pictures

3 Anticipated

Ss may find it difficunt to use the conditional type 2, so teacher should prepare a lot of practice

4 Procedure

1 Should and Shouldn’t (20’)

a Presentaion:

-T revises the use of should and shouldn’t quickly.

+In this lesson, should and shouldn’t are used to offer solutions and give strong

advice

 You should do sth = it is a good thing to do or it is the right thing to do

Ex:

1.You look tired You should go to bed

2.The government should ban cigarette smoking in public places

 You sholdn’t to do sth = it isn’t a good thing to do.

Ex:

You shouldn’t believe everything you read in the newspapers

We usually use should with i think/ I don’t think/ do you think…?

Ex:

1 I think people should protect the sea

2 I don’t think Lan should work so hard

3 Do you think i should go out to relax?

b Practice

-T asks Ss to do exercise 1 and 2

-T goes around to help Ss to do the exercise

-T asks Ss to compare their answers with another student.

-T gives correct answers

Exercise 1:

2.you should look for another job

3.he shouldn’t go to bed so late

4.you should take a photograph

5.she shouldn’t use her car so much

6 should put some pictures on the wall

Exercise 2:

2 I think smoking should be banned, especially in restaurants

3 I don’t think you should go out this evening

4 I think the boss should resign

c Production

-T shows some picture and asks Ss to make sentences with should/shouldn’t

2.conditional sentence type 2 (23’)

a Presentation

-T elicits the form, meaning and use o the conditional sentence type 2

-T revises the form, meaning and use of the conditional sentence type 2

Form: If + subject + past simple, subject + would/could + infinitive

Meaning: The second conditional is used to talk about things which

are unreal (not true or not possible) in the present or the future

Use: It is not used to talk about things that can happen in the present

or the future.

Ex:

1 If i was you, i would drive more carefully in the rain

(I am not you, this is unreal thing)

2 Paula would be sad if Peter left

(Peter will not leave, that is not going to happen)

b Practice

-T asks Ss to do exercise 3 in pairs

-T asks them to compare answers with another pair

-T asks some Ss to read out their answers

-T feedbacks and gives coerrect answers

c Production

-T devides the class into 2 big groups: A & B

-T asks the Ss in group A to write If-Clauses (ex: if i was a fog), and the Ss in group B to write the independent clauses with would (ex: i would marry to the Princess of Wales)

-Then teacher collects and matches them at random It will be a very fun experience

Homework: (2’)

-T summarises the main points

-T asks Ss to do the extra exercise as homework

Extra exercise:

Write a conditional sentence type 2 for each situation.

1 I don’t have a big house I can’t invite many friends to my Birthday party

=> If i have a big house, i would invite many friends to my Birthday party.

2 He drinks too much coffee He can’t sleep well at night

………

3 The students don’t understand the instruction They can’t do assignment

………

4 He doesn’t do morning exercises He isn’t fit

………

5 She eats much sugar She is very fat

………

2 If he did not drink too much coffee, He would sleep well at night.

3 If the students understand the instruction, they could do assignment

4 If he did morning exercises, he would be fit

5 If she did not eat much sugar, she would not be very fat
