IV COMPREHENSION READING
Read the following passage For questions 51 – 55, you are to choose one best answer (A, B, C or D) to each question.
Let children learn to judge their own work A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected all the time: if corrected too much, he will stop talking He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people’s In the same way, children learning to do all the other things they learn to do without being taught – to walk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle –compare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes for himself, let alone correct them We do it all for him We act as if we thought that
he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to Soon he becomes
dependent on the teacher Let him do it himself Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants it, what this word says, what the answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not
If it is a matter of right answers, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book Let him correct his own papers Why should we teachers waste time on such routine work? Our job should be to help the child when he tells us that
he can’t find the way to get the right answer Let’s end all this nonsense of grades, exams, marks Let us throw them all out, and let the children learn what all educated persons must some day learn, how to measure their own understanding, how to know whatthey know or do not know
Let them get on with this job in the way that seems most sensible to them, with our help as school teachers if they ask for it The idea that there is a body of knowledge to be learnt at school and used for the rest of one’s life is nonsense in a world as complicated and rapidly changing as ours Anxious parents and teachers say, ‘But suppose they fail to learn something essential, something they will need to get on in the world?’ Don’t worry! If it is essential, they will go out into the world and learn it
51 What does the other think is the best way for children to learn things?
A by copying what other people do B by making mistakes and having them corrected
C by listening to explanations from skilled people D by asking a great many questions
52 What does the other think teachers do which they should not do?
A They give children correct answers B They point out children’s mistakes to them
C They allow children to mark their own work D They encourage children to copy from one another
53 The passage suggests that learning to speak and learning to ride a bicycle are
A not really important skills B more important than other skills
C basically different from learning adult skills D basically the same as learning other skills
54 Exams, grades and marks should be abolished because children’s progress should only be estimated by
A educated persons B the children themselves C teachers D parents
55 The author fears that children will grow up into adults who are
A too independent of others B too critical of themselves C unable to think for themselves D unable to use basic skills

IV COMPREHENSION READING
Read the following passage For questions 51 - 55, you are to choose one best answer (A, B, C or D) to each
question.
Human memory, formerly believed to be rather inefficient, is really more sophisticated than that of a computer
Researchers approaching the problem from a variety of points of view have all concluded that there is a great deal more stored in our minds than has been generally supposed Dr Wilder Penfield, a Canadian neurosurgeon, proved that by stimulating their brainselectrically, he could elicit the total recall of specific events in his subjects’ lives Even dreams and other minor events supposedly forgotten for many years suddenly emerged in detail
Although the physical basis for memory is not yet understood, one theory is that the fantastic capacity for storage in the brain is the result of an almost unlimited combination of interconnections between brain cells, stimulated by patterns of activity Repeated references to the same information support recall Or, to say that another way, improved performance is the result of strengthening the chemical bonds in the memory

There are many varieties of spider in the American Southwest, but none receives more respect than the western black widow, Latrodectus Hesperus This poisonous spider, also called the “hour-glass” or “shoe-button” spider for the shape of the red markings on its abdomen, produces a venom 15 times more powerful than that of a rattlesnake However, few deaths can be blamed on this insect because bites are rare and only a small amount of poison enters the body
The female adult black widow may reach a length of 1 ¼ inches, while the smaller male averages ¼ inch long The adult female has a shiny black bulb-shaped abdomen, which distinguishes it from the male of the species The male is generally brown with red and white markings on its flat underside
The female adult deposits its eggs in specially constructed sacs that hold from 50 to 250 eggs The tiny pale spiderlings hatch within a few months and gradually develop into adults in one to two years Some females live up to three years The male does not fare so well, as it sometimes suffers the fate of being consumed by the female after the summer mating season

Read the following passage For questions 52 – 55, you are to choose one best answer (A, B, C or D) to each question.
Probably the most famous film commenting on 20th century technology is Modern Times, made in 1936.
Charlie Chaplin was motivated to make the film by a reporter who, while interviewing him, happened to describe working conditions in industrial Detroit Chaplin, together with healthy young farm boys, was lured to the city to work
as automotive assembly lines Within four or five years, these young men’s health was destroyed by the stress of work
in the factories.
Scenes of factory interiors account for less than one-third of the footage of Modern Times, but they contain
some of the film’s most pointed social commentary as well as its funniest comic situations No one who has seen the film can ever forget Chaplin vainly trying to keep pace with the fast-moving conveyor belt, almost losing his mind in the process.
Cleary, Modern Times has its faults, but it remains the best film treating technology within a social context It
does not offer a radical social message, but it accurately reflects the sentiments of many who felt they were helpless victims of an over-mechanized world.
