Subject- verb agreement
(sự hoà hợp giữa chủ ngữ và động từ)
Theo nguyên tắc chung thì:
Chủ ngữ số ít đi với động từ số ít
Chủ ngữ sồ nhiều đi với động từ số nhiều
Ex: The car is/ was new The cars are/ were new.
My friend goes / plays / washes / studies / lives
My friends go / play / wash / study / live

ng cần chú ý một số tr ờng hợp sau đây:
1 Chủ ngữ là nhóm từ hay một mệnh đề ( động từ theo nó là số ít )
Ex: Walking in the rain is not a good idea
To play tennis is very exciting
What you told me is very upset
A large collection of books is on the shelves
2 Động từ hoà hợp với chủ từ, nhng không hoà hợp với danh từ đứng sau các giới
từ sau đây:
with , as well as , together with , along with , in addition to
Ex: The cow as well as horses is grazing grass
The teacher with all his students was friendly
All the children together with their father go to the zoo 3 Ngợc lại, khi hai chủ từ kết hợp với nhau bằng các từ hoặc các cấu trúc:
or , not but , either or , neither nor , not only but also
Thì động từ phù hợp với chủ từ đng ngay trớc nó
Ex: Either you or I am mistaken
Either Peter or Mary lives here
Neither she nor her sisters are happy
Lan or her parents go to the movies.
Not only Peter but also his parents live here
Not Tom but Peter plays football
4 Chủ ngữ là đại từ bất định, thì động từ theo nó là số ít:
one, everyone , no one, nobody , each, either , neither , anyone ,
anybody someone , something , somebody , everything ,
Ex: Neither of the books is mine.
Each of you has to do homework
Everything looks clean and bright
Nobody knows where she lives
5 Chủ ngữ kép đợc nối bằng and thì động từ theo nó là số nhiều:
Ex: You and I are / have / go / were
Mother and sister were in the kitchen
6 Chủ từ là danh từ tập hợp thì động từ theo nó là số nhiều, đôi khi là số ít group , class , crowd, committee, government, police, family, team, company
audience, army, crew,
Ex: The football team practices everyday
The football team buy their own uniforms
The police hav e arrived Her family have/ has gone on holiday
7 Chủ ngữ là nhóm từ diẽn tả số l ợng, tên cơ quan, quốc gia, tổ chức
đoàn thể. thì động từ theo nó là số ít.
Ex: The United States is a large nation.
Twenty dollars is enough for me.
Fifty dollars seems a reasonable price
Twenty years in prison is a very long time
Forty miles on that road seems like one hundred
The Vietnamese people is a heroic people

8 Khi có một nhóm từ kết hợp với giới từ OF đi sau thì động từ hợp với danh từ

9 Những danh từ số ít tận cùng bằng S: (động từ theo nó là số ít)
( news, means, series, measles (bệnh sởi), economics(môn kinh tế học), physics, phonetics( ngữ âm), mathematics, politics (môn chính trị học), linguistics (ngôn ngữ học), optics (quang học), civics.( môn học về công dân) )
Ex: The news is very bad Measles is sometimes serious
What is economics? Politics is the science or art of government.
