M&B’s fave Mum!
Giovanna Fletcher
When Team M&B asked
me to share my smartest mum-hacks with you this month,
I had a little chuckle to myself Smart
is not something I’ve felt very often
since becoming a mum Or, rather,
I use my head in a different way to
what I did before, so when I sit and
listen to someone like Brain Cox talk
about black holes, my mind fails to
process his words at all! In fact, it
shuts down as though it’s been
stunned into its own black hole
of white noise
Yes, smart as a mum might mean
not thinking you’re smart Yet, you
somehow manage to pick up a
whole new bunch of skills, tricks and
hacks to make everyone’s life a little
easier And this is all the smarts you
need right now! But, anyway, here
are a few things I’ve discovered
since becoming a mum:
G Snacks are your friend and can
help get a child from A to B… a little
gentle bribery never harmed
anyone Rice cakes are gold!
G Lots of nappies have pee
detectors on them Meaning the
strip down the middle goes from
yellow to blue when your baby
has done a wee… I have a good
friend who only discovered this
with her third baby
G Always have a spare bag of
clothes for each child in the car, just
in case… you can guarantee that if
you ever forget this bag one child
will vomit all over everyone or jump
G Going outside and getting some fresh air will always be a good idea!
But the very smartest thing for
you to do with your baby is trust your instincts and believe in yourself You won’t get it right all the time – none of us do – but you know what is best for you and your baby, and that makes you the smartest person in the world!
With three boys and a busy life, I’ve learnt some pretty smart mum-hacks, says Giovanna…

This magic ingredient will make all the difference,
says positive birth expert Milli Hill
MEET THEEXPERT
Milli Hill is founder
of the PositiveBirth Movement, author ofThe Positive Birth Book (£14.99,
a birth expert, this
is the question
I get asked themost Everybody wants to know the tips,
tricks and hacks for the ultimate kit for
labour But here’s the news: there is only
one thing that youreally need when you
have your baby, and it’s not luxury lipbalm
or even disposable pants It’s the wonder
hormone, oxytocin, and you literally can’t
give birth without it
Also known as the ‘love hormone’ and
the ‘cuddle chemical’, oxytocin is the main
hormone we make when we fall in love, give
birth, breastfeed and bond with our babies
It gives us that warm, fuzzy feeling that
we might associate with post-coital bliss
Oxytocin is so central to the process of
giving birth that, if you don’t make enough
yourself, you will be given a synthetic version
of it via a drip in order to help progress
labour And in this manufactured form,
it’s called ‘syntocinon’ Fill your birth bag
\WW^MZÆW_QVO_Q\PW`a\WKQVIVLaW]¼ZM
much more likely to have a smoother,
easier and even less painful labour
Oxytocin’s chief job in labour itself is to
strengthen and maintain contractions The
hormone is made in the pea-sized part of
your brain called the hypothalmus, and it
works on a positive feedback loop – the
more you make of it, the more you keep
producing It’s a very happy circle indeed
Understanding more about this wonder
hormone is key to a positive birth, because
SVW_QVOPW_\WOM\aW]ZW`a\WKQVÆW_QVO
can really help to keep your labour
progressing, and assist if it stalls or slows
So if you’re headed for theatre, keep
it flowing by focusing on your love for your partner and your baby Repeat a mantra such as
‘I will birth with love’ to yourself.

nickname for oxytocin is the ‘shy hormone’
– its production can be slowed down orstopped by bright lights, noise, the presence
of strangers or anything that makes you feel startled or unsafe This is unfortunate when you consider that the environment that most women are expected
to give birth in – the labour ward of an obstetric unit – often ticks
THE SECRET TO AN
P O S I T I V E L A B O U R
‘I got through the first 12 hours of contractions by knitting!
It’s proven to relax you, and thought to release oxytocin.’
Torya Hughes, 32, from Edinburgh, is mum
to Amber, seven months
Trang 26m o t h e r a n d b a b y c o u k | Spring 2 0 1 9 | 2 5
‘During early labour I held
my hubby with each contraction and, with my head
on his chest, listened to his heartbeat I found it really calming, and it gave me that butterfly, loved-up feeling, which I think really
boosted my oxytocin.’
Katy Blundell, 31, from
Stockport, is mum to Benjamin, five weeks
Bump & Birth
Trang 27Don’t wait until your contractions start before you begin to think about oxytocin In the final few days of pregnancy, think low light, low noise and no interruptions So send your partner to the shops for those last-minute bits and bobs you need for your hospital bag!
Chill out
Your partner may be understandably nervous, but tell them that, right now, they simply need to be there for you Let them guard your nest and keep you safe, and treat you with the utmost loving care.
Get loved up
Most of us have a fairly similar idea of the kind of environment we’d like to make love in… candles, log fire, soft rugs, and zero interruptions, anyone? The reason we find this sexy is because of oxytocin, so build your birth space along similar lines Oxytocin thrives
on this kind of slightly cheesy romantic setting, and if you throw in a massage and a compilation playlist, then oxytocin will really be
in abundance!
Trang 28Bump & Birth
many of these boxes! But knowledge
is power Now you know what oxytocin dislikes, you canconsciously work to create
an environment that willstop the shy hormonefrom doing a runner
It likes the same sort
of environment thatleads to you havingreally amazing sex,
so use this as yourinspiration and tailor-make
an environment that’s justright foryou Create a birth
space that’s inviting and cosy Ifyou’re in hospital, then perhaps push that rather clinical-looking bed to one side, and bring your own cushions or pillow, and a throw, too Use battery operated candles or fairy lights, and ask for any surplus medical equipment to be taken out or put behind a screen Take in your own black-out blinds,
if you like – whatever works!
And the creation and maintenance of an oxytocin-rich birth space is something that dads and partners can really get involved with

Twiddle your nipples
Yep, this one is a bit of
a taboo topic but, if you want tostimulateoxytocin, anythingfromnipple twiddling
to masturbating to orgasm will help you to progress your labour It can be especially helpful if your contractions are taking time to establish,
or are a little stop-start.
Nest
Take your nesting instinct literally and create your very own nest Whether you’re in a ward, a birthing centre or
at home, build a nest using blankets, pillows, yoga mats and cushions on the floor When you give birth, you have the same needs as any other self-respecting mammal: you need
to feel safe, warm and cosy.
Get to-skin
skin-No matter what kind of birth you have, get your baby, naked and prone on your own naked chest, as soon as possible If you can’t have skin-to-skin right away, don’t worry – it will still feel wonderful hours or even days after the birth And it does feel amazing, because you, and your baby, will be flooded with oxytocin Enjoy!
Block
everything
out
If you’re not having a home birth
where you can wholly control the
noise and who’s visiting, then take
proactive action Use an
eyemask and ear plugs or
headphones, so you can
escape into your own
little world.
As you wait for your baby,
remember particular times
in your life when you felt
incredibly loving and loved,
and look at photos of these
moments to help you Focus on
your love for your
soon-to-be-born baby, too Think about how
you already feel about him and
visualise how much that love will
grow when you first see his face
and as you hold him This is a
great technique to use if you’re
having a c-section.
Kiss
Making out with your partner during the early stages of labour is a great way to get the oxytocin flowing Don't be shy – labour is a great chance to really feel your feminine power as you embrace the sexual energy of making a new life Kissing, locking eyes, loving murmurs, sexy talk, and whatever kind of touch you are in the mood for, will all help the oxytocin to flow And simply having skin-to-contact with your partner will also boost its production
You may want to ask the midwife
to leave first though!
‘I maximised
my oxytocin level by hoovering to heavy metal,
and singing along at the top
of my lungs – there’s a certain
joy in seeing a clean carpet!’
Anna Glowacka, 38, from London, is mum to Luna,

Feel the love
Trang 29a comfort and distraction
in labour, so don’t be shy
to put on some music while you get your bounce on
Birth-ease birth ball, from £18.99,
pose with a blooming bump is some feat,
but this feel-good stretch is much easier
with your birthing ball Kneel down in front of
your ball with your bum resting on your heels
Part your knees as wide as is comfortable,
keeping your big toes touching Bring your
belly down towards the ground and stretch
forward through your back and, at the same
time, extend your arms in front of you and
grab hold of the ball Slowly sway your hips
from side to side This pose is also a
great position to receive ashoulder or back rub!
Balance
With the correct posture, birthing balls are surprisinglystable – but you may find yourselfwobbling around in your third trimester,
as your centre of gravity shifts To ensure you don’t topple off, place your ball in the corner of the room so it’s wedged in place
You can still bounce and practise your pelvic floor exercises, but save the hula and figure-of-eight shapes for when you have a partner to help stabilise you Bare feet are best, too,
to avoid slipping
Speed up
If you are close to or past your due date, sitting on your ball uses gravity to coax your baby deeper into your pelvis, and encourage him to make his entrance to the world And, during labour, staying in this upright position allows your pelvic joints to open and expand for an easier birth There
is also constant pressure on the cervix from your baby’s head – meaning cervical dilation may be quicker, too

Reduce your stress levels
Higher levels of the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol have an effect on your amygdala too, and so this combination can put your inner tiger on ultra-high alert, making everyday situations such as someone pulling out in front of you in the car park feel like a direct threat to your baby’s survival
‘Actively manage your stress levels by taking gentle exercise, practising breathing techniques and talking concerns through with your partner, especially in your first and third trimesters, where cortisol levels naturally spike, to help keep your emotions stable,’ says Julianne.

Mostly aS:
You’re a super-chilled out mama-to-be but as much as you want to put your baby’s needs first, you often find yourself prioritising everyone else’s, too Harness that tiger-mama instinct and don’t be afraid to let her roar when something’s not right: you’re growing a baby, and your needs matter.
Mostly BS:
You keep your inner tigress just below the surface, ready to pounce whenever needed You’re striking just the right balance between getting what you need, and asking for it nicely Forgive yourself the odd outburst – these are big emotions – and carry on with the good work, mama!
HOW LOUD IS YOUR ROAR RIGHT NOW?

of the potential trigger, you can make a
change to ensure it’s more manageable.’
So, if being jostled about on the Tube
on your morning commute sends your
protective instincts into overdrive, could
you investigate the possibility of working
from home or getting a lift to work one
day a week? Or if a colleague insists on
[PIZQVOLM\IQT[WN PMZLQᙙK]T\XZMOVIVKa
let her know that you need lots of positivity
and reassurance right now Remember,
your tiger-mama instincts will help you feel

make these changes
HARNESS THE ENERGY
‘As you near your due date, your body
will experience a surge in the stress
hormone cortisol, needed to strengthen
your baby’s lungs and ripen your cervix in
preparation for labour,’ explains Julianne
And this rise in cortisol can heighten your
tiger-mama instinct, leaving you feeling like
the last thing you want to do is bring your
baby into this huge, scary world! But this
change will also give you a serious boost in
energy, that you can put to good use during
TIJW]Z;W_PMVaW]ÅVLaW]Z[MTN PWTLQVO
your bump and wishing you could keep
your baby safe inside you forever,
recognise that this feeling is being
driven by a hormone surge, and this
tiger-mama instinct means you’re a
great mum already Then channel
all this emotion into positive
energy that’ll help you through
labour by saying a mantra such
as ‘I am strong’ or ‘I am
protecting my baby’
Engaging with your
inner tiger mama will
help you welcome your
baby into the world!
