FEATURED ARTIST
Trang 11We first introduced Alex Hamilton on these pages over
five years ago Even then, his work was impressive for
such a young artist Imagine Alex continuously devoting
himself to learning and growing more and more each
year since then Whereas he started out with the
influences of a few artists that caught his eye, today,
it’s the sensory overload of so much visual art on social
media that influences Alex
Specifically, it’s a mix of today’s artist’s work and sign
painting from the old days that drive his pinstriping
and lettering It’s not just paint work, either Alex also
studies the graphic design industry; including logo
designers On the more active designs seen in use today,
he says, “It seems to be having a renaissance Things
that worked 30 years ago are popular today.” He sees
it as, “Bold design with old school feel.” and follows
artists from all over the on social media What intrigues
him is, “You can make things simple but very powerful.”
One example of this is his recent job pinstriping a
classic 1926 Kissel A car that is so rare that the exact
number to exist is unknown, this restoration needed
the measured three pinstripes on it to be complete
and accurate While initially a little intimidated by the
job, Alex used his skills to make the owner smile and
preserve history
There’s a lesson to be learned here Opening up to the
big picture, Alex’s wide scope looks at all the hand
crafting done today, from metal work to even the tattoo
industry Where he was influenced in the past by a few
artists, today he strives return the favor and influence
others by elevating the art he sees and creates He says
his initiative comes from how much influence there is on
social media and that drives him to contribute, creating
new and better new art
One area he has shown great improvement is his leaf
work Last time, he admitted he was looking forward
to getting better at it Today, he is not only better but
innovative when he breaks out the gold and silver leaf
Often, folks will see his gilding work and wonder, ‘How
did he do that?’
His tools of the trade are still basically what he started
with A Mack King 13 and Mack Series 10 (size 000) are
what he’s been using for striping the past 13 years For
lettering, it’s Mack quills He’s still painting cars, trucks
and motorcycles from his home in Arizona Today, he
paints more items for himself than he ever did, taking
advantage of all the design he studies And usually,
when folks see his work, he ends up selling them That’s
OK with Alex Hamilton He’s usually already working on
the next five pieces…

Trang 15PINSTRIPING STEP BY STEP
Steve has been pinstriping for more than 50 years and has gained a worldwide reputation A charter member of the PINSTRIPING HALL OF FAME, he has pioneered many new looks in pinstriping and has taught many newcomers to perfect their own style through both group and 1-2-1 classes
as well as his popular Wizard Pinstriping DVD tutorials and signature brushes The aim of this column is to inspire pinstripers of all levels in their use of colour and design
STEP 1 Using a scroll style (Wizard Vortex Brush and Variegated Gold
base)- I am considering the loud and flashy background It is a TnT
panel with a brushed alum base and Blue candy topcoat, very loud and
imposing To make my foreground impressive, I have to really hit it with
a loud base It’s about contrast This is the most important step to me
because if the background is imposing, it takes over and you continually
fight to notice the striping against the background (this piece has been
sanded with 1000grit and thereby very dull, but when it’s clear-coated
it is extremely imposing
We will be discussing color and its impact
today The use of color is as elusive and
confusing as handling the brush and getting the
perfect viscosity from your pallet Color can
make or break the project and its important to
have a color strategy I will give you some ideas
here and maybe spark your imagination to
have a better understanding of color.
STEP 2 I am “underscoring” by base color with black
I know black isn’t loud and imposing against the blue, however, against the gold it supports and builds its shape by reinforcing its borders It also adds to the flow and beauty of the piece As we add color, it will give the structure beauty alongside the black
Trang 16PINSTRIPING STEP BY STEP
16 l P&KG Feb/Mar 19
STEP 3 Note- grips will vary with the
scroll style Here I am resting my pinky finger and rotating this line alongside the gold I am using the black to actually extend the length of the gold base structure This “pencil grip” is good for this manoeuvre Using urethanes (because this project will be clear-coated) I am getting almost immediate dry times
STEP 4 The completed
shape with black Notice how the black really
“supports” the gold base structure, enhances it and stretches it out
It will have plenty of contrast against the loud background That’s what
we are looking for!
STEP 6 This is the “build”
of red, it reinforces the black, without messing with the gold It acts as a “brace”
as it holds the design in place, adding color and form to build the piece
STEP 7 Changing to a “Lazer Lines” brush,
(a synthetic liner will do here) I am swinging
additional “wings” off the red to make it
louder using orange This move stretches
this feature and gives it grace and beauty
STEP 5 Same grip – we will begin
adding “color” here using red Against this crazy loud background I am using bold and solid colors It’s a real fight to compete against this ground aluminum and blue flashing going on
in the background so I am doing my best to pound color onto this piece
Trang 17PINSTRIPING STEP BY STEPSTEP 8 This is an important step I am adding a bit of a
brighter shade of orange to the last step This is primarily
because I need more impact and flash Notice how it makes
this louder and gives it more importance in the total design
STEP 9 Overview of the piece shows
how the surrounding colors (those around the gold) have done their job supporting the base gold color Now we’re going “inside” the gold to fill some of those quiet gaps
STEP 10 It’s difficult to choose a color here- everything is so loud
and boisterous I decided to “whiten” up the process blue color
and add some body to the inside of the gold Actually after seeing
this color, I wish I would have used a green But, oh well!
STEP 11 Finished- I added some softer shades of purple to the
black “feather” shapes just to add fill without making it scream
at you Notice the added details on the corners of the border
Just to add interest…I sometimes give the borders attention to
complement the center I would probably not use this much color
on a customers bike or car unless it is an extreme custom job
Usually customers vehicles don’t require this much – but practicing
use of color- its really challenging to successfully combat a loud
Trang 19Brush FX
TAMCO'S Brush FX is the ONLY pure acrylic
urethane striping and lettering paint on the
market The paint is almost ready to use
straight out of the can for most people You
may wish to pallet the brush with your choice of
reducer to gain a consistency you desire Brush
FX gives you full artistic freedom over how to
use it, pallet it, and control it.
If you want to clear over Brush FX, go right ahead This
is one of the only striping paints on the market that can be
cleared without worry of wrinkling or recoat sensitivity issues
No need for tack coats, longer flash times, and hoping and
praying as you clear Finally a worry free striping paint when
it comes to clearing! If you do not wish to clear Brush FX, we
have you covered there too Simply pallet with 7603/7605/7607 hardener, and you now have a catalyzed, fully UV backed striping and lettering paint that will not fade or fail in the sun or elements If you want a scientific mixing ratio, mix it 8:1 with our
76 series hardener Adding hardener, will also help the way it flows, and most find reducer is not needed
Another plus with Brush FX is dry times! Literally have a striping paint that is dry in anywhere from 5-10 minutes You can stripe another color right over it, and it will not move or bleed on you Try that with the enamels on the market
Want coverage on your white? Its called 1 Coat white for a reason No 2 coats here Something Brush FX does offer, is pretty impressive coverage ability
Tamco didn't create Brush FX to compete with the others
We created Brush FX, to be the only truly unique striping and lettering paint on the market today
Currently available in 19 colors, and the ability to add more at any point Want a custom Brush FX color for a project? We have the ability to do that too! All colors can be blended together to create your own custom blend as well
4 Showing proper
technique of holding
a pin-striping brush while pulling your line Again the ability
in which Brush
FX flows helps in making this part a little more simplistic
Artist: Matt Hutcheson, Riverside California
Paint in Photo’s: All Tamco Paint
Pinstriping Paint: Brush FX in Outline Black
Car: 1963 Cadillac
2 As you can see, Matt pallets the Brush FX on a magazine
like many do He has a cup of Tamco Urethane reducer in slow (HR-1380) that he uses as needed when he pallets with the Outline Black For this application no hardener is needed He will be clear coating over all of his work
3 Brush FX is
designed for any application you would normally use
a pinstripe paint for
Pulling long lines on vehicles, to outlining your work Here you see Matt using the Outline Black to outline the Filigree work he did all over the 1963 Cadillac
Pin-striping your work just gives it that extra pop it needs to make
it stand out And you’ll especially notice how much once its under Tamco clear coat
1 The nice ability that Brush FX has is the ability to pull
long lines, with a great ability to flow Right out of the can
you’ll notice it’s a thinner product That’s one of the many
attributes people have come to appreciate about Brush FX
Trang 21TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND, HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE ART?
Born and raised in Miami, FL in a Cuban Family, my father was an Architect & Artist Art is how we connected growing up Unfortunately, he passed away when I was 9, art is the one thing
I have held on to
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT BEING AN ARTIST?
Being able to share my creativity with my children, showing them techniques and giving them a different perspective in observing things to draw them on paper I don’t feel like there are many female Kustom artists, so being able to step into this scene being a female and sharing my art has been a very humbling experience
WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING ABOUT BEING AN ARTIST?
The 1st step to getting what’s in my customers mind onto canvas, everything after that is butter I also noticed that if I haven’t created a personal art piece, I get cranky
WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES / ARTISTIC INSPIRATIONS?
My boyfriend Robert Messenger from Messenger Hot Rods is
my inspiration to dig deeper into the Kustom world, he’s been
in the Kustom world for over 10 years, I’ve learned a lot from him I also look up to Leftys pinstriping, Hot Rod Jen, Darren McKeag, Bonita and Bob Signs, Tiffany Trouble, Zanaer from Lumpys Garage, Mark W Hagstrom those are just a couple of my favs Of course giving credit to the OG’s of pinstriping (Ed Roth, Von Dutch, Steven Kafka….‣
KATFINK KATFINK
Trang 22DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE PIECE OF WORK,
OR ART STYLE YOU PREFER?
By far my favourite thing to paint right now is Pin-ups
WHAT TECHNIQUES DO YOU USE?
Details is what I find myself spending the most time on, eye lashes, hair, facial features, those little things make a big difference Favourite brushes to use for details is Mack Dragonfly & Mack “The Virus”
WHAT ARE THE TOP FIVE ITEMS IN YOUR KIT THAT YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT?
1Shot paint, Mack Brushes, my boyfriends custom made pallet, a cup holder he made for me, Von Dago’s & airbrush supplies
WHAT PROJECTS ARE YOU WORKING ON THIS YEAR?
A major project that my boyfriend and I working on is opening up a hot rod shop in Niceville, FL that will also become our art studio for our e-Commerce HQ We have already out grown our little office, we will
be looking forward to start the New Year with a BANG!
HOW HARD IS IT TO MAKE A LIVING FROM THIS ART FORM?
Making a living as an artist is EXTREMELY hard The term starving artist exists for a reason, but we live in a world where learning how
to do things is readily available through the internet You can literally learn how to do “ANYTHING” Giving up shouldn’t be an option when you are passionate about art
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE STARTING OUT IN THE CUSTOM ART WORLD?
#1 Advice: you will never know everything! Always learn and observe from those who are successful in this field and ask questions

Trang 25! O
I
Rhythm This was the 22nd annual Rhythm Riot and I have been to every one of them, from the first
when it was just a two-day event to the four-day event it has become As always, it was held at Pontins Holiday Camp, Camber Sands, Sussex, England As the 2018 flyer proclaims, the
Rhythm Riot is intended to be a ‘1950s Rhythm
& Blues and Roots Rock ‘n’ Roll Weekend’ and the best of it in 2018 certainly was
This is the weekender which over the years has brought
us many American rhythm & blues and rock ‘n’ roll stars from the 1950s, such as Lloyd Price, The Treniers, Big Jay McNeely, Hal Singer, Joe Houston, Nappy Brown, Young Jessie and Marvin & Johnny For many of them, such
as H-Bomb Ferguson and Sam Butera, this was the only weekender in Britain on which they ever appeared
Highlight performances this year were from Bobby Wilson, Sugar Ray’s Lucky Strikes, Sugar Daddy & The Cereal Killers, The Redondos, The Oh! Sharels and The All-star Wynonie Harris Show
There was much jiving to both the bands and the deejays between them As usual, a huge and very popular flea market took place on Sunday morning, with many clothes, Cds and DVDs and period bric-a-brac for sale and Sunday afternoon was occupied by a custom and classic car cruise And just to ensure everyone could get all dolled up with the right looks for everything, there was a Beauty School, a Hair & Make-up Parlour, a Barber, a Portrait Photographer, an Alterations & Repairs Service, and a massive Shopping area full of stalls loaded with clothes There was even a Tattoo Parlour and a Pin-striper on hand Plus there was late night burlesque from The Killer Diller Club, and opportunities to try your hand
at being a deejay Back at the apartments there was specially programmed Rhythm Riot TV and radio

Trang 2626 l P&KG Feb/Mar 19
Here’s just a few words about some of the real
high-lights amongst the 25 live musical acts
who appeared
Bobby Wilson claims to be Jackie Wilson’s son and certainly both looks like
him and sounds like him His act was thoroughly professional and superbly
backed by The Revolutionaires from the UK Bobby gave us a whole bunch
of songs from his father’s song book, including ‘Reet Petite’, ‘Dogging
Around’, ‘That’s All I Need’, ‘Etcetera, Etcetera’, ‘Lonely Teardrops’ and ‘You
Better Know It’ from the 1959 movie ‘Go Johnny Go’ Bobby really worked
the stage, looked very slick with his pompadour and shiny suit and was even
wearing a cummerbund! There were people standing from the front of the
stage to the back of the dance floor to watch this act and massive responses
from the audience to many of these well-loved songs
A second highlight of the whole weekend
was a real surprise – the Japanese band Oh! Sharels
This outfit consisted of three girl
singers, each with excellent and pleasing
feminine-sounding vocals and each
singer was capable of singing a fine lead
as well The three girls were backed
by a six-piece rhythm & blues band
of the first order with a percussionist
over in one corner of the stage, who
we suspect was also the band leader
and arranger This man came equipped
with an amazing range of percussion
instruments to supplement the
drummer, including what looked like a
large orange carrot, which he proceeded
to grate to fine effect!
The band were so well presented in
co-ordinated outfits with the female
sax player coming on stage for the
first number, a sax instrumental of
the ‘All Night Long’ breed, honking as
she moved into her position with the
band really going for it Then the three
girl singers came on, complete with
white gloves which highlighted their
spectacular choreography They had a
different set of moves for each song and
were very slick
The percussionist was an entertainment
in himself He seemed to be having such
a good time every second he was on stage with big smiles, and in one number was actually banging a tambourine on his head in time to the music He was also encouraging the other players on during their solos Some of the songs they performed, to give a flavour of this act, were The Cadillacs’ ‘Peek-A-Boo’, The Zodiacs’ ‘Stay’, The Bobbettes’ ‘Mr Lee’, The Dubs’ ‘Could This Be Magic’,
‘Dedicated To The One I Love’ following The Shirelles’ version, The Moonglows’ ‘I Knew From The Start’, Shirley Gunter’s
‘Oop Shoop’, an excellent rocking
‘Boogie Woogie Baby’, a surprisingly rousing ‘You Can’t Sit Down’ from Phil Upchurch’s Combo but with full vocals,
a fabulous slow and moving version of
‘Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart’
with shades of The Coasters’ version but altered by the female vocals, and an incredibly well-choreographed encore with The Clovers’ ‘Love Potion Number 9’ and ‘Baby, Baby’ which blew us away
On ‘Potion’ for example, the female singers used their gloved hands to hold
their noses and cover their eyes during that part of the song which goes ‘I held
my nose, I closed my eyes, I took a drink’!
Their presentation and playing and enthusiasm were like a breath of fresh air compared to most of the small groups we have no space to mention
in this review All this was hugely appreciated by the audience, who gave them huge rounds of applause The large dance floor was three-quarters full of people standing in amazement to watch this act, and the back quarter was full
of jivers We really thank the organisers Robin & Colette Weathersbee and Jerry
‘Chatabox’ for bringing this act to the
UK and trust that other promoters will hear about this act and read this review and bring them back to the UK for shows up and down the country We unreservedly recommend the whole outfit
Trang 27The end of the weekend
climaxed with an hour long
tribute to Wynonie Harris.
This featured Sugar Ray Ford and His
Lucky Strikes with Pat Reyford singing and
playing his guitar, then backing a procession
of three additional vocalists, each brave
enough to try their hand at mimicking the
greatest of the rocking blues shouters,
who was in many ways the pioneer rock ‘n’
roller Wynonie’s incredible vocals have
only ever been seriously rivalled by H-Bomb
Ferguson and it was a huge challenge for
any of these latter-day guys to come near,
but all of them did their best and all did
a pretty good job Amongst the numbers
chosen from Wynonie’s massive song-book
included Sugar Ray doing ‘Quiet Whisky’
and ‘Wasn’t That Good’, Cat Lee King from
The Cocks singing ‘Good Rockin’ Tonight’
and ‘Bloodshot Eyes’, Ed Stephenson from
The Revolutionaires with ‘I Feel That Old
Age Comin’ On’ and ‘Shake That Thing’,
Nico Duportal with ‘Down Boy Down’, Sugar
Ray providing an amusing ‘I Like My Baby’s
Pudding’ and an ensemble encore with all
the vocalists on ‘Big Fat Mama’ which, as
Ray said, Wynonie didn’t record but might
well have performed
Another highlight was an Italian band called Sugar Daddy and The Cereal Killers.
The leader Mr ‘Sugar Daddy’ Caputo is clearly a fan of Wynonie Harris and Louis Prima The band played excellent versions of songs and arrangements made famous
by these and other similar performers, with wild tenor sax solos well to the fore One
of these songs, ‘Good Morning Judge’, is on the Sugar Daddy CD ‘Thirteen Days’,
on the cover of which Mr Caputo even looks a lot like Louis Prima! The CD in fact, contains primarily self-penned numbers in similar style, mostly medium tempo songs, but for the stage show Mr Caputo wisely chose predominantly high energy rockin’ and jiving numbers
All in all this was
a massive ego.
Other acts of note at the Riot included the Redondos Doo Wop group, and the Truly Lover Trio, both from the USA and Laura B &
her band and The Rimshots from the UK Sugar Ray & The Lucky Strikes also did a superb set of their own which also included a guest appearance from singer Aisha Khan
Throughout the event the dee jay sets between the bands played mostly really rockin’ tracks from the 1950s, and from current bands playing in the same style There is nothing better for jiving, and for
a large proportion of the many hundreds of people attending this event, the music and dancing is their main interest Another big interest is the fashions of the 1940s and 1950s, and almost everyone
was wearing styles which originated from these eras There is now a massive industry producing brand new clothing and accessories in these styles, for men as well as women Bright and well-made garments are easily available from many websites, including Amazon, and many advertise in P&KG But the Rhythm Riot is not a nostalgia event Almost everyone attending, from all over Europe, and as far as Japan, is too young to remember the 1950s For all
of us, the music and the fashions are
as valid today as any other In fact, once you have discovered that these are the best, why mess with the rest! Adios until next time, when I review
‘The Wildest Cats In Town Christmas Party’!

I had been playing the double bass in a rockabilly band The Stockmen for about sixteen years and basically that was how I got into drawing – I started
by designing a website for our band and later on was drawing posters and CD sleeves Very soon I discovered the whole world of Kustom Kulture and low-brow art and such masters as Coop, Vince Ray, Frank Kozik, along with pin-up artists and illustrators (Elvgren, Rockwell etc.)

Although I don’t play music at the
moment, it’s still very tightly connected
to my art – that’s my main source of inspiration and most of my commissions are coming from bands and record labels To give some names - Diablo Records, Mad Sin, Guitar Slingers, Sin Kings, Ukrabilly Bang Festival It’s a real pleasure to see the final result live – a festival flyer, a poster, a stage backdrop
or to meet a guy wearing a t-shirt with your design, especially when that guy finds out that you’ve drawn it
My art style is a kind of book kind of thing, infused with rock’n’roll and some humor (dark sometimes)
cartoon/comic-ARTWORK PROCESS
My process is quite simple - I draw a sketch in pencil, then either trace it with
a non-repro blue pencil over a light panel
or just scan into Photoshop, change pencil lines to be blue and print out for inking For inking I use liners (mostly Edding or Sakura) and brushes (Winsor
& Newton sable no.2 and Raphael no.3) Inks are of various brands - Deleter, Koh-i-Nor, Black Magic, W&N I try teaching myself to ink with crowquill nibs, so sometimes I use them too (Zebra G-pen and Hunt 102 and 107) When I just started working in that comic-book style, I used to do inking in Photoshop by tracing sketches with bezier tool, but very soon realized that it takes too much time and you can’t really add lots of details, so
I started doing it on paper
When I’m done with inks, I scan the image at a high resolution (600 dpi), in black and white mode or sometimes
in greyscale and afterwards adjust it in Photoshop (mostly messing with Levels or Brightness and Contrast) If I’m working
on a relatively simple design (for a t-shirt for example), I convert inks into vector paths This helps to get a cleaner and smoother lines, but some small details could be lost, so you have to find an optimal balance
Colours are also added in Photoshop - I just create layers filled with solid color and use vector masks
INKING IS THE MOST FUN
PART BUT IT CAN BE QUITE FRUSTRATING
AS WELL!
Trang 31FEATURED ARTIST
For sketches I can use any paper, but it should
be strong enough, because sometimes I do
LOTS of erasing And for inking I usually use smooth paper for laser printers, something
like 200 - 250 g/m2 Bristol paper is also great, especially for brushes and nibs
I guess inking is the most fun part But it can be quite frustrating as well!
Recently a selection of my works has been
published in “Rockabilly/Psychobilly An Art Anthology”, an art-book by Jamie Kendall
That was very cool too
Art is not my main occupation (I’m a software developer by profession) which might be good, because I don’t have to worry too much about the money and can just have fun On the other hand, drawing is something that I really enjoy doing, but not always have enough time
Wishing good luck and inspiration to all the artist out there! Keep rockin’!

y name is Seth Jensen
I’m 21 years old and
I’ve been working
professionally as a
Officially Licensed Artist
for Ed “Big Daddy” Roth’s Rat Fink
company since I was 15 years old My
medium is Sharpie markers, and that is
what got people interested in my art I
grew up always drawing Rat Fink and
Kustom cars and it has always been one
of the biggest parts of my life When
I was 15, one of my leaders from a
program in my church told me he knew
Ed Roth’s wife, Ilene It turns out she
lived in Manti Utah, and I grew up in
St.George Utah, so he set up a way for
me to meet her Apparently she loved
my art because she asked me if I wanted
to work professionally for the company
That was one of the biggest days of my
life Since then, I created the Rat Fink
Reunion poster this year, and I have
met many people who have helped me
get where I am, such as Horny Mike,
Shannon MacDonald (An artist for the
Beatles) and many more I work full-time
as an artist now and make Kustom art for
commissioned pieces
To me, the most important part of being
an artist is to see how it brings people together I wouldn’t have ever had the confidence or success of being an artist without all the people who support and love my art They are what makes it worth it Just like Ed Roth has always inspired me, it is the best feeling to see how just making art brings others happiness I developed my specific style
by using Sharpie markers It gives a demented, bright, almost psychedelic acid trip twist on the colors of my art that I couldn’t recreate with any other medium I have started doing airbrushing, but Sharpie is what works easiest for me
TOP TIP: If you are interested in creating art, it basically comes down to this: you are going to get crap from everyone when you start making it, but DON’T let that affect you People hated my art for being creepy and twisted, and now people love
it for being that way Find what you enjoy doing and just keep going I make art for
a living because I love it, and I love the joy it brings others If that’s your goal, nothing else matters!

Dry metal flake guns
Dry metal flake guns are changing the custom
paint world, top painters worldwide are now
using our products for these reasons
Speed
It takes a fraction of the time to flake your
work, typically 2 to 3 passes of dry flake over
wet clear is sufficient to get that “old school”
look - that is almost 100% coverage
Material Savings
Because more of the flake is applied per
application again you save a massive amount of
“carrier” be it 2k clear or intercoat, etc and as
a bonus you’re reducing film build up
Clean up Time
Let’s face it, whether your applying your flake
wet or dry Metal Flake gets everywhere the
difference is that when you come to clean up -
Dry metal flake just sweeps unlike wet applied
flake it sticks like the proverbial to a blanket
Future Work
How many times have you applied flake wet,
then 3 months down the line you’re applying
a white base and right in the middle of the job
is a flake particle? Not when you use it dry -
You have a completely seperate device and to
clean the flake guns, simply blow them out and
they’re ready to go with another colour of flake
A) Flake King 550 Mini Gun
B) Flake King 500 Airbrush Adaptor
C) Flake 1000 Gun with small, medium and
large nozzles for improved blending
Let’s tell you about our dry guns
We have developed 3 guns for you, 2 of them (A & B) can run off a standard airbrush compressor and if you already have a certain model of airbrush B will fit on the front of it - so you can apply your binder with your airbrush and then put the airbrush adaptor (B) on and apply the flake
A & B are good to apply flake on anything up to the size of a crash helmet Our big gun is the Flake King 1000 (C), a self levelling (or fixed) barrel with controllable flake volume valve, this, with the supplied regulator really enables you to “dial in” how much flake is applied and with the different sized nozzles you can blend your passes better, again improving the final finish
Finally, our Metal Flakes
All our metal flakes are polyester, manufactured for automotive use in solvent and waterbased binders and clears, we guarantee show stopping brightness. The opposite page shows our standard factory colours, but we also have another 30 custom blends available for you
Check out our distributors/dealers for how to videos, etc and we’re also working with specific partners to provide flake application training courses for

Trang 38CONCEPT: ART ON SHOES
In early 2015, Ward Schoonbrood was a happy client of Carlo
Meulenhoff at his shoe shop Meulenhoff Schoenen in the city
centre of Maastricht, The Netherlands Carlo sold a broad range
of men’s, including personal pairs that he would customize with
a photo print technique for his clients Inspired by the creative
possibilities of the shoes Carlo sold, Ward decided to start
making his own creations Working as an art manager at the
Schoonbrood Art agency, Ward used an array of designs from
artists he worked with Carlo was instantly enthralled and soon
they developed their first art shoes Putting colourful art on the
street and smiles on faces, the pair received an influx of positive
feedback from international shoe aficionados
PRODUCTION: CREATIVITY AND QUALITY
The pair pioneered the first artisanal shoe workshop, based in
The Netherlands, specializing in custom made pairs However,
the potential of the concept was much bigger and there was a
huge demand for series production
The process of creating the shoes requires designs to be printed
onto white leather, the patterns are cut out and then the shoe is
assembled The leather gets a fine protective layer added and
the durability is tested to ensure the longevity of the shoes The
designs created by the artists are often a mixture of techniques,
including using acrylic on canvas and digital artwork
Art Shoe Mafia is a fashion brand with a colourful dose of bravura that brings you a collection of highly attractive, accessible art shoes Art Shoe Mafia not only makes creative designs, but also serve as a platform for applied creative talent The brand also develops matching accessories to their shoes, helping their unique customers in distinguishing themselves

Trang 39In early 2017, Ward and Carlo took the concept of art shoes from a small scale production to the next level, as they created their brand Art Shoe Mafia
They started with production in Spain, shortly followed
by production at Ambiorix Shoes in Tongeren, Belgium, which was just around the corner of Maastricht in the Euregion Meuse-Rhine Ambiorix Shoes is an internationally renowned company, producing elegant shoes of high quality for an international market since 1895 Ambiorix also delivers shoes for the Royal family of Belgium, the national football team and the Olympic team
And now Art Shoe Mafia is added to that list, combining creativity with quality under the label ‘Art Shoe Mafia made
by Ambiorix’ With Ambiorix as the production partner for the long term, Art Shoe Mafia will gradually expand its network of dealers in Europe and eventually also in the United States
COLLECTIONS AND DESIGNS
For Art Shoe Mafia, the central part of the concept is the application of artistic designs on high quality shoes Therefore, it’s essential for the brand and the collaborating artists to create designs that are made especially for the shoes The first collection is designed by Dutch artist Robert Jan van Melle, known for his positive nạve style and rich use of primary colours The shoes of the first collection are titled Paletti, Maastricht, Love, Flower Power, Summertime and Christmas These titles immediately give a good idea of the themes Van Melle and Art Shoe Mafia like
to work with The shoes are matched with corresponding belts and, to top it off, also with hand painted wooden bow ties, of course also carrying the same designs as the shoes. The second collection is designed by Dutch artist Roy Wagemans a.k.a The Artfather Wagemans developed a collection based on the central theme of flags and cultures
of the world, as proposed by Carlo and Ward under the title ‘Colours of the World’ Roy applied a mixed media approach, starting with paint on canvas, digitalizing this basis followed by adding layers to the work with help of digital techniques The shoes of this collection listen to the names Union Jack, Stars & Stripes, Tricolore, La France, Oranje Boven and Race
The third, upcoming collection will again be designed
by Van Melle, which will be released in spring 2019 The collection is called Citytrip and will take us walking from New York to Amsterdam via maritime places such as St Tropez and Barcelona It promises to be a unique and vibrant assortment This collection will then be followed by
a fourth in the autumn of 2019
Art Shoe Mafia will develop two basic collections every year, working with various artists to create a diverse
combination of collections, complemented by special editions throughout the year As the collections grow, international enthusiastic clients already start to collect multiple pairs of shoes, bringing the concepts of shoe collector and art collector together
THE SHOES ARE MATCHED WITH CORRESPONDING BELTS AND, TO TOP IT OFF, ALSO WITH HAND PAINTED
WOODEN BOW TIES
