Messy was in the kitchen earlier
Hmm, I’m not sure
That’s a good question!
Trang 9YES! Let’s be detectives and use our senses to investigate it

Trang 14Lita’s Magic Hot Chocolate
Lita is my grandma, but she is not what you might expect a grandma to be like! Lita is very funny and she sings all the time She thinks nothing of climbing up onto the roof if the chimney needs fixing!
I love my grandma Lita
Today after school, I run to her house and I ring ring riiing the bell! She loves it when I ring the bell lots of times because she knows it’s me!
“Hola Lola!” she sings, opening the door, “Brrr, quick-quick, it’s so cold outside!”
“Hello Lita! I’m freezing!” I say
“Come in and warm up in the kitchen I’m going to make us some of my magic hot chocolate,” she says, dancing along the corridor
Trang 15“Ah-haa! Here you are! Come little pot, you’re going to be perfect for cooking my magic hot chocolate!” she exclaims.
Lita lets me pour the milk into the pot and she puts it on the cooker
Then she climbs up the kitchen
shelves to get the precious box
of magic cocoa (Did I forget to
mention my grandma is very
small?)
“Why is it magic, Lita?” I ask
“ Hush, hush, I’m going to
melt the chocolate Smell,
the magic is coming,” she
answers mysteriously
Then she fills two big
cups of the dark potion
and puts them on the
table
15
Trang 16“Hmm, it smells delicious Lita,” I say.
“It does Lola, and it brings back so many memories ”
“What memories?” I ask
“When I was a little girl, a long time ago, in my little village on the top of the mountains, very, very far away in La Sierra Nevada ” she pauses
“Please tell me Lita!” I cry
My grandma smells her cup
of chocolate again
and closes her eyes
with a big smile
“I was six or seven and
it was winter I was
with my brothers and
sisters and we were
waiting for our mother
to come back from the
market down in the
valley.”
Trang 17“I was looking out of the window, when suddenly I saw
snow flakes falling from the dark grey sky
‘Snow! Snow!’ we screamed, and jumped up and down with joy We all
ran outside and tried to catch the white little flakes ” Lita opens her
eyes and looks at me
“Then what happened Lita? Tell me!”
“The snow fell thicker and thicker, and soon the whole village was
covered in white We made snowballs and we jumped and ran and slid
down the snowy slopes
But after a while, we could not recognize anything anymore ”
“Oh no, Lita! Were you lost?” I ask
17
Trang 18My grandma smells her hot chocolate again, pauses for a moment and then continues her story.
“Yes, it was dark and cold and silent We grabbed each other’s hands and started to call for help in a panic
‘Hello, hello ?’ but only the wind answered, ‘Wooo, woooo ’”
“Oh no! Were the wolves coming, Lita?” I gasp
“No, no, that was only the sound of the wind through the trees, Lola!” My grandma winks at me, smiles and continues her story
Trang 19“Suddenly we heard voices calling, coming closer and closer
‘We’re here!’ we shouted back Very quickly our mother
appeared, followed by all our neighbours We were saved at
last! Oh how happy and relieved we were! And very cold and
hungry!
We all hugged, laughing and crying,
and walked back to the village
When we got home, my mum put a big pot of creamy milk on the stove Then she opened a box of chocolate she had brought back from the market and poured it in the pot
A delicious smell filled the room I will never forget the marvellous feeling of being all together, happy and warm.”
“That’s why your hot chocolate
is magic Lola Every time I make
it, the smell will bring back
memories.”
“It does that for me too Now I
will always think of you when I
smell this magic hot chocolate!”
I love my grandma Lita

an extra sense of touch.
Moles have a super sense of touch
too, but can’t see very well. Messy Monster can smell as well as a dog!
Did you know that pigs have a super sense of taste?
Animals have super senses!
If I was a bat,
I would have super hearing!
Trang 32Poem by Gabby Dawnay Illustration by Alex Barrow
I see the sea splash on the beach
I spy the boat just out of reach.
I taste the salt and breathe the air, And jump the waves without a care.
And from the corner of my eye,
I spot a seagull in the sky.
I hear its squawk - an urgent screech,
I watch it circling round the beach.
I taste the ice cream on my tongue
That’s melting in the warming sun.
I feel the tickle on my skin
As ice cream trickles down my chin.
AT THE SEASIDE
Trang 33I build a castle in the sand And let its grains run through my hand.
I pick up pebbles smooth and round, And search for treasures lost and found.
I climb the rocks, I touch the top
I shudder as I spy the drop
-I turn towards the sea once more
And watch it as it hits the shore.
I feel alive, I feel I’m me.
I love it here, beside the sea…
And as I look for distant ships,
I smell my supper – fish and chips!
33
Trang 34You can smell a cake burning You can taste if your food is bad.
What other dangerous things can you detect
with your senses?
Our senses make us aware of danger
You feel pain when you touch
something spikey You can hear a car toot You can see a car coming.
Trang 35What other nice things can you detect with your senses?
I can smell a flower I can taste strawberries.
I can hear a bird sing.
Our senses make us aware of nice things
I can see a rainbow.
I can touch a cat.

Trang 37Taste experiment 2
To taste and recognise what we eat, we often use our sense of touch, eyes
and especially our noses! Taste is not just on the tongue!
Ask a grown-up to help
you chop the food into
similar sized cubes Label each one
so you know which is which.
Now pinch your nose and try the first
cube Write down what you think it is
Try another until they’re all finished.
Now you can turn over the pieces of paper and see how many you got right!
Put all the cubes on a tray and place the labels face down next to each one.
You will need: some toothpicks, a pencil and paper Foods of similar colour such as
peeled cucumber, apple, pear, banana, cooked potato and cheese.
