LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

AS FASHION HERALDS the beginning of a new season, we take a look

at the fresh Asian faces; rising stars who are constantly capturing the spotlight while there are others who are almost household names around the globe, like Tokyo’s biggest export — model, actress and singer Kiko Mizuhara (Page 136) and actor and singer-songwriter  Timmy Xu from China (Page 144), who recently bagged a starring role

in an international campaign for American brand, Coach.

In this issue, we not only take to trend watching but also delve into what power dressing is like for the contemporary woman (Page 74)

— and it doesn’t involve the pantsuit — and explore why gossip is good for you (Page 84) Last but not least, as the topic of diversity and inclusivity gains traction in the fashion industry, the apparent lack of black designers warrants more attention (Page 82).

Enjoy this month’s reads!

Lara Apponyi and Michael Woodcock, founders of the Los

Angeles-based design firm Work & Sea, make wallpaper that, at first glance,

seems familiar Interlocking flowers, vertical stripes and damask

patterns are all common motifs in their work But look closer and

Introduces

Above: for a Bellport, Long Island,

mansion, the designers chose the

patterns, clockwise from top left,

the Hunt and Funky Stars for two of

the house’s bedrooms, Shape

Shifters for the third-floor hallway,

Busted for the master bathroom,

Totem Tunis for the living room

and Monkeys of Ghazipur for an

ocean-facing guest room.

‘‘Then it’s O.K when things get weird.’’

The two met while working at the New York architecture firm Raad Studio, where they discovered a shared interest in scene-setting accents

Four years ago, they launched their own business: Apponyi, who studied art at City & Guilds of London Art School and finds inspiration in

Trang 50

continued from page 47

everything from Greek myths to

film, paints the elements of each

design, usually in oil, after which

Woodcock scans and arranges

them into a pattern, often pairing

seemingly disparate objects, such

as palm trees and cigarettes or

monkeys and giant red poppies

The work’s richness and personality

soon earned the duo renown among

artists and fashion designers, and,

in 2017, Jason Wu commissioned

a trio of Work & Sea patterns

incorporating cats, disco balls and

camouflage for his women’s wear

As might be expected of people

who met in the architecture world,

however, the designers don’t just

worry about the perfect print but

about the space it will occupy This

past fall, they finished their largest

project yet: wallpapering 16 rooms

of a rambling, 1860s waterfront

mansion in Bellport, Long Island

The property, which Apponyi

describes as ‘‘ripe for some kind

of 19th-century costume drama,’’

had been acquired by a friend of

theirs, an eccentric financier who

wanted to update the house ‘‘in a

romantic way,’’ says Woodcock

That meant leaving the peeling

ceiling paint and creaking

floorboards untouched When

it came to the walls, though, the

designers had free rein

The result is a fantastical

labyrinth that showcases the full

range of their collection For the

central living room, the heart of the

house, the designers chose a rich

red paper accented with alternating

stacks of palm trees and elephants

In a more casual living room

adjacent to the summer living

room, used primarily in the warmer

months, they chose a design filled

with mermaids, fishermen and

waves of hand-drawn curlicues

Upstairs, one of the bedrooms has

been done in the Hunt, a

four-panelled jungle scene rendered

from the perspective of a crouching

tiger that nods to the canvases of

Henri Rousseau Taking in its dense

grasses and leaves, which stretch

eight feet up the wall, it’s easy

to imagine houseguests feeling

transported to a more tropical sort

of shore ‘‘We wanted to bring you

into this magical, oversize world,’’

says Apponyi ‘‘It almost swallows

you up.’’ — Merrell Hambleton

THE NEWLY OPENED ARTitude Galeria in Singapore is an art gallery — the first of its kind — dedicated to

introducing Colombian artists to Asia Its launch was

marked by a series

of contemporary works under the umbrella theme of

“Magical Realism”, which imbues surrealism into the rudimentary, presenting everyday situations with a touch of magic The exhibition features masterpieces from eight promising Colombian artists, amongst them, Walter Zuluaga and Omar Delgado Visitors can expect to immerse themselves into the idiosyncratic effusions of the former or the psychedelic future conceived by the latter In all, the gallery opens the window to the streets of Colombia, famously painted with the insatiable creativity of its native artists — Sng Ler Jun

IF YOU ADORE the luxurious, bohemian

aesthetic of Gucci, then the brand’s new

haute perfume line, The Alchemist’s

Garden, will surely delight Inspired by the

art of alchemy and fragrance making, you

can expect all of the signature Gucci

touches — each scent is housed in a

beautiful lacquered glass bottle and built

around ingredients that are linked to the

house’s codes Blended by master perfumer

Alberto Morillas (with direction from

Gucci’s Alessandro Michele), the collection

consists of seven, singular eaux de parfum,

as well as three acque profumate (scented

waters) and four perfumed oils You can

layer the acque profumate and perfumed

oils over the seven parfums, using them to

magnify certain notes or change the tone of

a particular scent for a bespoke effect Star

scents from the line include A Song For The

Rose, which comes in a stunning blue bottle

— inspired by a flacon that was once owned

by Michele’s mother — and The Voice of

the Snake, a rich, intoxicating oud housed

in a snake-emblazoned black bottle

The statement piece features a modest front, while it houses the Longines-exclusive L897 automatic calibre within a rose gold case and an elegant silver dial stamped with the watchmaker’s signature barleycorn motif This annual calendar timepiece also features a transparent caseback adorned with a commemorative inscription that reads “50 Million”, revealing the intricate innerworkings of the watch A testament

to honest and meticulous watchmaking, this classic timepiece is also a teaser for a new generation of Longines watches — Sng Ler Jun
