W ith winter slowly ebbing
away and new life starting
to appear in the garden,
there are lots of reasons
to be cheerful
It's time to bid farewell to energy-
zapping cold, dark nights; flu season,
and SAD (seasonal affective disorder)
which affects around one in three
people in the UK every year
Spring has sprung — symbolising
new beginnings, hope and vitality, so
embrace the new season with zest and vigour and be happy!
One scientifically proven way to feel
happier and get back on track after flu
season is to eat a healthier diet
Researchers say the more fruit and
vegetables we eat, the happier we will
be New guidelines suggest that instead of five-a-day, we should now be
aiming for 10 Add soup and smoothie!
You might also have heard of the gut-brain connection and people talking
about the “microbiome” lately This is
because researchers have found evidence to suggest happiness could
be directly linked to the gut
An experiment known as the Flemish
Gut Flora Project found that people with depression were lacking in two
different types of gut bacteria It suggests that bacteria in our digestive systems could affect our mental
Burst into Spring with new-found zest
wellbeing and may be linked to depression
One way to boost your good gut bacteria is to eat fermented foods Fermented vegetables such as kimchi
and sauerkraut are pre-digested and
therefore easier for your body to absorb
their vitamins and minerals
Science has even found a link
between good gut health and a reduction in depression symptoms You could say a healthy, happy gut means a
healthy, happy brain!
Getting a good night’s sleep is another scientifically proven way of boosting happiness Sleep is when your body heals and restores itself
and processes information Not
getting enough sleep can wreak havoc on your overall wellbeing and
impact on your mood
Research has found that being a
night owl can shorten life expectancy
“Boost your good gut bacteria
by eating fermented foods” Finding Your
Happy Place
easy to find, you could be looking in the wrong place
As the Dalai Lama, who is a patron for
has to come from your own actions.”
In other words, you are the master of
and is associated with a higher
prevalence of psychological and
neurological disorders Your body's
circadian rhythm is programmed for sleep at certain times of day, such as when it's dark — so if at all possible
rearrange commitments and switch off gadgets so you can go with the flow and
get a good night's sleep You'll wake refreshed, in good spirits, with more mental clarity in the morning
Getting active can boost happiness
levels — and help to tire you out —
because exercise releases feelgood
chemicals called endorphins in your
body Aerobic or cardio is thought to be the best type of exercise for increasing
Trang 7happiness levels so try dancing,
swimming, walking or tennis for a
gentle workout
Spending time outdoors is another
fantastic way to feel good Go fora
woodland walk, or potter about in the
garden, to benefit from fresh air and
natural Vitamin D (otherwise known as
the sunshine vitamin) Just five
minutes’ outdoor exercise can
significantly improve your mood
Expressing gratitude may sound like
another buzz-phrase of the moment but
it, too, has been proven to make people
happier It just means making time
every day to focus on the things you are
grateful for Some people write down
their top three at the end of the day
Regular meditation can also
increase happiness and, contrary to
popular belief, can be done anywhere
at any time You don’t have to be
sitting in the lotus position
surrounded by candles!
Meditation offers a whole host
of other benefits too,
such as reduced stress and
improved sleep
The easiest way to practise it
is through mindfulness, which
means being present or “in the
moment” It's a good way to feel
relaxed, calm and balanced
* Start small: Setting aside even five minutes a day Is a great starting point
¢ Sit up: Keep your back straight
so that you don’t fall asleep and
the breath flows easily
* Breathe: Feel your breath as it moves in and out Follow its rhythm and notice how it feels as
it flows through the body
* Observe: Observe the thoughts that pass through your mind, the sensations that arise in your
body, and the emotions
that surface
* Don’t Interfere: Don’t try to stop
or ignore any thoughts that rise
in your mind
* Don't Judge: All thoughts, feelings and sensations are valid
* Be patient: Trust that things will
unfold in their own time and just stay with your breath
* Commit: Try it every day fora
week It takes a few sessions for
it all to make sense
¢ |fall falls, relax: If it’s not for you, try just breathing deeply in and out for a few
minutes every day

Happy Hormones
ant to be happy? Embrace your
hormones! Hormones have a
huge part to play in our happiness
levels Dopamine, for example, is
responsible for the excited feeling
we get when we expect a reward To
get more of this feel-good hormone,
the experts at A.Vogel, which
specialises in plant remedies,
suggest we exercise regularly, sleep
well, learn to meditate, listen to
music and eat foods, such as meat
and dairy, which are rich in tyrosine
Other natural feel-good chemicals in
our bodies include oxytocin, which
helps to strengthen the mother-child
bond and release happy hormones
during breastfeeding; serotonin,
which motivates us to gain respect
and security and encourages our
mating instinct, and endorphins,
which can be released during
exercise, sex and deep breathing
and help us to push through pain
For more oxytocin, spend time with
the people you love and enjoy lots of
cuddles! To boost serotonin,
exercise, look after your gut, eat
simple carbs and increase foods rich
in L-tryptophan, such as oats, dried
dates, sunflower and pumpkin
seeds, meat, fish, and chickpeas

Pet Power
pending time with and caring for
animals can help to raise
happiness levels through the roof!
According to The Mental Health Foundation, just stroking, sitting next
to or playing with a pet can elevate
dopamine and serotonin levels and
relax and calm the mind Meanwhile, studies have found that dog owners are less likely to suffer from
depression than people without pets
Owning a dog can help to reduce stress and anxiety while interacting with them can even reduce our
perception of pain It’s also a great
way to combat loneliness and social
isolation The responsibilities that
come with owning a pet can give your day purpose, reward and a sense of achievement However bad your day's been, you'll have someone at home who depends on you to shower you with affection The British Medical Journal even says the emotional bond between owner and pet can be as intense as in many human
relationships If you don’t own a pet
of your own, borrow a neighbour's dog
to take for a walk, or visit a sanctuary
or dog or cat café!
Spread The Joy
hare feelings of happiness by
sending them out into the universe! Research has shown that
regularly practising compassion meditation not only helps us relate
more to others, it also boost our own feelings of joy and connectedness
By forcing ourselves to become rooted in the present, meditation
stops us worrying so much about the
past or the future Adiba Osmani of
inhere meditation pods, which offer peaceful spaces to meditate or
unwind in some of Britain's busiest places, recommends the following
technique:
Take a couple of minutes to
consider yourself and wish yourself well Perhaps you might like to say
“May | be well, May | be happy, May |
make progress,” for example Then take a couple of minutes to do the
same for someone you care for Then
repeat the mantra for someone you
may know only in passing And finally, extend this wish for the world
You can do this as part of a meditation
The Mind-Body Connection
ot only does happiness make you feel better, it makes you healthier too
Did you know, for example, happiness could help you live longer? It could even increase your life span by as much as seven years!
just as powerful a predictor for measuring our overall health and life expectancy as other lifestyle factors such as smoking
Scientists say that being happier can mean less stress, a stronger immune system, better heart health and less pain when it comes to conditions such
both positively and negatively — so make being happy a priority!

Holy Week Is a big deal in Seville, Spain, where they have an annual festival to celebrate Easter Parades of
floats depict scenes from the Bible It’s a very
religious event, but also dramatic and memorable, and participants parade through the streets wearing robes
and tall pointed hoods with holes for the eyes The
idea is that traditionally, the religious faithful would repent their sins in anonymity The processions are held daily for the 11 days of Holy Week, with different
themes Other attractions in Seville include Royal Alcazar of Seville, a Renaissance royal palace, Plaza

Israel is sun, sea, sand and so much more
Janette Marshall goes beyond Jerusalem
he majority of travellers to Israel, whether their heritage is
Jewish, Christian or Muslim, visit Jerusalem It’s the city
where Christ was crucified and the Prophet Muhammad
visited on his Night Journey from Mecca to Jerusalem (750
miles) and back, via heaven, by morning
As part of a trip to the Holy Land many visitors go north to
Galilee and the Mediterranean coast, then south through the
Judean desert to Bethlehem and the Dead Sea Few go further
south to the Negev and Arava desert regions, which are rich in
archaeological discoveries from prehistory through occupation
by the Greeks, Romans and Byzantines
The landscape is an ever-changing kaleidoscope of rocky
mountains and desert plains in ochres, yellows and reds
Oases of date palms punctuate the desert, thanks to
Israel's programme of water desalination and the ingenious
water recycling techniques of businesses and Kibbutz
communities who also grow oranges, pomelos, kiwi fruit,
vegetables, herbs, salads and many other crops there Green
areas have also sprung up because the Judea Agency has
planted more than 8 million trees throughout the south

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, said to contain Christ's tomb, is easy to spot with two dark domes on the

Near the viewpoint are the Einstein Hebrew University built in 1920 and the WWI British Cemetery For more

Trang 15h Ramon
he gigantic crater of Makhtesh (mortar) Ramon was formed over 10 million years by weathering, erosion and flash floods It also lies on the Syrian-
African Rift fault line, so earthquakes and tremors
over millions of years have also contributed to its
creation, and the Arava and Negev Desert plateaus
of southern Israel
The spectacular crater that can be viewed from
above at the Ramon Visitor Centre, is 40km long,
9km wide and 400 metres deep The folds and
layers of different rocks in the sides contain more
than 80 minerals and elements including zinc and
uranium, potash and sulphur
“This is the biggest dry land hole of its kind,”
says Alen Gefny who runs Jeep tours of the crater
“Acacia trees survive here in the desert; camels,
gazelles, ibex and oryx eat the leaves and the tree
supports many other species of wildlife The waxy
seed coating is slowly broken down during digestion
by the camel, which explains how the tree spread
from African deserts to Israeli deserts.”

Many Kibbutz welcome visitors and offer talks and tours
At Kibbutz Ketura, founded in 1973, my guide was Yuval
(38), a “kibbutznik” for seven years with his wife and children
“We believe in equality, democracy, tolerance and mutual
responsibility,” he explains There are 170 adults at Ketura all

one bank account to fund housing, canteen meals and
groceries, education for the 200 children with a nursery, junior
and high school funded jointly with neighbouring kibbutz,

“But our salaries are not even close to the amount of money
we need to build our own houses, stock our shop, run a laundry,

Cr riding is made easy
at this ranch just a 10-
minute drive from Eilat No
riding experience is
necessary The camels line up
alongside a high platform and
an instructor explains how to mount the pile of cushions and rugs on top of the camel
You hold onto the pommel of the saddle with one hand and wrap the opposite leg in front of the saddle The camels are roped together, and you sway gently as they tread softly through the desert wadis (dry river beds or valleys) while you admire the
ochre rocks, gullies and mountainsides
The simplest circular trek (about 150 shekels) goes
around the ranch, with a guide walking alongside Back
at the ranch there's freshly made mint tea (their own blend with lemon and grapefruit — it’s delicious) and
flatbread cooked over a camp fire then spread with
labneh (strained yogurt), olive oil and sage (yum) in a
Bedouin-style tented area; around two hours in total
Longer routes include tea or picnics in the desert, and safaris involve a full meal in a Bedouin tent pitched in a
desert landscape www.camel-ranch.co.il/en/
