Chủ ngữ và động từ trong câu

 Động từ là từ thể hiện hành động hoặc trạng thái của chủ thể Chủ thể (chủ ngữ) là người hoặc vật thực hiện hành động/ trạng thái đó

Ex: Kathy eats an apple

eat: động từ thể hiện hành động của chủ thể Kathy (người)

 Trong một câu hoàn chỉnh, luôn có ít nhất một chủ ngữ và một động từ

Ex: Kathy an apple

1 Chủ ngữ

Chủ ngữ trong câu có thể có nhiều dạng, tất cả đều có chức năng của một danh từ đi trước động từ chính Những dạng chủ ngữ phổ biến bao gồm:

 Danh từ/ Cụm danh từ:

The top executives agreed to negotiate with the union

 Đại từ:

They are having a team meeting today

 Cụm danh động từ:

Operating the machinery is difficult

 Cụm động từ nguyên mẫu có “to”:

To meet the president was a privilege

 Mệnh đề danh từ:

What Jane needs for her office is unclear

2 Chủ ngữ giả “It”

a/ “It” được sử dụng để thay thế cho một chủ ngữ dài như cụm to-verb, hay một mệnh đề that Trong trường hợp này:

“it”: chủ ngữ giả

cụm hoặc mệnh đề bị thay thế: chủ ngữ thật

Ex:

It is important to open negotiations with the Brazilian firm

Chủ ngữ giả Chủ ngữ thật

It is understood that Mr Gann will resign fairly soon
