On account of war conditions in China, Dr Joseph F Rock

leftYunnanearly in1939 andsettledinDalat, southern Annam,

where he has been makingbird collections forthe U. S.National

Museum The first consignment of specimens contains some

very interesting forms, among which may be mentioned Otus

senegalensis distans and Crodas langhianis The following five

formsare believed to be worthyofseparation and are herewith

described

PericrocotusSolarisdeignani, subsp nov

Type.—Adult female, U S. National Museum, No 358855, Langbian

Peaks,2160meters.SouthAnnam,June, 1939

Similarto Pericrocotus Solarisnassovicus Deignanofsoutheastern Siam,

butthe throat grayish white withouta yellowwash;theremainderofthe

lower-parts a lighter, clearer yellow; the back and lesser wing-coverts

warbler green insteadofneutralgray;headand neck abovealightergray

Wing,84;tail,80;culmen, 13.

Male SimilartothesamesexofPericrocotus Solaris nassovicus, butthe

throat without the yellow wash and the lower parts on the average less

intense orange

Remarks.—This form isfoundeduponthetypeandfive males taken in

the mountains of southern Annam in the vicinity of Dalat Named in

honorofMr HerbertG Deignan

Pomatorhinusochraceicepsalius,subsp nov

Type.—Unsexed, U S. National Museum, No 359059, Dran, 3000 ft.,

SouthAnnam, July, 1939

Similar to Pomatorhinus ochraceiceps ochraceiceps, but the tail darker

above, the black area at the tip more extensive and extending further

towardsthebaseofthefeathers;thetailbeneatheven hasthe blackmore extensive,verylittlebrownshowingexceptatthe baseandanarrowborder

at thetip. Wing,97;tail, 109; culmen, 35.5mm.

Remarks.—Dr Rock only tookthesingle specimen It hasbeen com-pared with five males and two femalesfrom northern Siam Six of the

latter (four males and two females), measure: wing, 87-97 (92.5); tail,

101-118 (113.9);culmen,29-34 (32.2)

Leioptilaannectenseximia, subsp.nov

Type.—Adultfemale, U S. National Museum, No 359014, Forests of

Cam-ly,5300feet. SouthAnnam,July, 1939

SimilartoL.a.saturata,butthebackblack;thecrissumandrumpdeeper

in color andthelatter restricted inareanot extending ontothe backor wingcoverts;ameretrace ofconcealedbrowninthe scapulars;thewhite streaksonthehind-neck obsoleteand hardlynoticeable;thewhitetipsto thetailfeathers morerestricted;afewwhitebarbsto the feathersof the

supra-loral region and a few smallwhite feathers on the upper eye-lid;

longeruppertail-coverts black Wing,78;tail,86;culmen, 15.5mjn Remarks.— Thepresentform has beencompared witheleven specimens

of Leioptila annectens saturata from northern Siam No specimens of Leioptilaannectensdavisoni have beenavailable forcomparison Judging fromdescriptions,itmustbe veryclose,butitcanhardlybethesame, being confinedto Mt Muleyit,Tenasserim

SimilartoAnthipessolitariasubmoniliger, butdarker above, the outside marginsoftheremigesandrectricesabrighter,redderbrown (nearrusset

Remarks.—Three specimens were taken at the type locality by Dr Rock; onesexed as a female, the others unsexed, butclearlymales The

U.S.NationalMuseumhasa femalecollectedbyC.BodenKlossatDalat,

4500feet, SouthAnnam. For comparison onlya male fromtheRaheng District,Siam,hasbeenavailable forcomparison Thesexes oftheAnnam seriesare quiteuniformanddifferasdescribedfromtheSiamesemale

Tribura idonea,sp. nov

Type.—Adult male, U S. National Museum, No 359220, Forests of

Cam-ly, westof Dalat, 1600 meters, SouthAnnam, June, 1939

SimilartoTribura taczanowskia,butmuchdarkerabove(Front'sbrown); throatwith smallroundblackspots;wingshorter;taillonger

Description.— Above Prout's brown, including the outer aspect of the wings; auricular region slightly lighter than the back; a narrow white

supra-loral streak;throatwhitewithsmallroundblack spots;breast and

Baccardoumber; undertail-coverts tawny-olive, the longer ones saccardo

umbertipped with whitish; tail above olive brown with a grayish cast;

tailbelow deepmousegray,theshafts similar Wing,50;tail,62.5;culmen,

10.5; tarsus, 18;middle-toeandclaw, 17.5mm.

Remarks.—Onlythetypetaken,abreeding birdwith thetailmuch worn

at thetip. The tail would probably have measured morein an unworn state All the measurements, except the tarsus, are smaller than those givenby Hartert (Vogel palaark Fauna, I, heft5, 1909, 542)for Tribura taczanowskia Only a single male of the latter has been available for

comparison

A good series of Tribura luteoventris has been examined Dumeticola thoradca does not belonginthegenusTribura,inmyopinion
