The STar-SpaNgled BaNNer

O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight

O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?

And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air

Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.

O say does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

alma maTer ariZoNa STaTe UNiVerSiTY

Where the bold saguaros Raise their arms on high, Praying strength for brave tomorrows From the western sky;

Where eternal mountains Kneel at sunset’s gate, Here we hail thee, Alma Mater,

Arizona State.

Fight, Devils down the field Fight with your might and don’t ever yield Long may our colors outshine all others Echo from the buttes, Give em’ hell Devils!

Cheer, cheer for A-S-U!

Fight for the old Maroon For it’s Hail! Hail! The gang’s all here And it’s onward to victory!

efficiency, technology and sustainability The full University Commencement program is made available to graduates on a reusable external flash drive This change aligns with our growing institutional efforts to enhance sustainability practices, and our broader endeavors to employ

technology in heightened service to our students.

The reusable external flash drive, combined with the abridged program distributed at spring ceremonies, will yield more than a 13 million page reduction in the amount of

printed materials distributed at ceremonies over

the week of graduation activities.

To order copies of the final book with all graduates names listed, email your request to ASUCommencement@rrd.com and someone will respond with payment instructions and order details.

Rafael Reif is the 17th president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and

a distinguished electrical engineer and educator Prior to his election as president

by the MIT Corporation in 2012, he served seven years as provost of the Institute

In both positions, he has championed fundamental science and MIT’s unique style

of interdisciplinary, problem-centered research while also inspiring innovation As provost, he helped create and implement the strategy that allowed MIT to weather the global financial crisis, drove the growth of MIT’s global strategy, promoted a major faculty-led effort to address challenges around race and diversity, and helped launch the Institute for Medical Engineering and Sciences As president, he helps to shape the future of higher education and pursues an aggressive agenda to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship Among his priorities are equipping the next generation of innovators with the tools necessary to drive their ideas to impact and instilling in MIT graduates a commitment to consider as a first concern the potential range of impacts their technological innovations may have on all of society Two

of his programs were designed for these purposes: The Engine, an accelerator to assist new ventures translation of tough technologies into innovations that address humanity’s great challenges, and the MIT Sandbox Innovation Fund Program that gives student-initiated projects the early support and mentoring to get off the ground A new facility named MIT.nano will accelerate research and innovation on campus and a long-term redevelopment initiative in Kendall Square will support the Institute’s entrepreneurial efforts beyond its campus

Reif was born in Maracaibo, Venezuela A first-generation college goer, Reif, whose parents fled Eastern Europe in the late 1930s, grew up in Venezuela speaking Spanish and Yiddish Reif earned his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from Venezuela’s Universidad de Carabobo in 1973 and worked the following year as

an assistant professor at Universidad Simón Bolívar In 1974, he entered Stanford University where a year later he completed an MS in electrical engineering despite his initially limited knowledge of English Following his graduation, he remained

at Stanford for a year as a visiting professor before he accepted an assistant

professorship at MIT in January 1980 By 1988, he was a tenured professor of electrical engineering, and in 2004, was named Fariborz Maseeh Professor of Emerging Technology Before his appointment as provost, his research focused

on three-dimensional integrated circuit technologies and environmentally benign microelectronic fabrication He is inventor or co-inventor on 13 patents, has edited

or co-edited five books and supervised 38 doctoral theses Reif is co-author of more than 350 papers published in refereed journals and conference proceedings At the national level, President Obama asked Reif to co-chair the steering committee of the national Advanced Manufacturing Partnership that spurred the creation of a network

of Manufacturing Innovation Institutes (MII) In April 2016, MIT won the lead role

in the Advanced Functional Fibers of America Insitute, an MII designed to

accelerate innovation in high-tech fiber and textile manufacturing in the U.S.

Trang 14

In 1993 Reif was named a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for his pioneering work in semiconductor thin films, and in

2000, he received the Semiconductor Research Corporation’s Aristotle Award He

is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and he belongs

to Tau Beta Pi, the Electrochemical Society and the IEEE IN 2015, he received an honorary of Doctor of Laws degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong He holds also honorary doctorates from Tsinghua University (2016) and the Technion (2017) In 1984, he received a United States Presidential Young Investigator Award Arizona State University is honored to confer upon Rafael Reif the degree of Doctor

of Humane Letters, honoris causa, in recognition of his achievements as a leader in education, science, social entrepreneurship and sustainable futures

The Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University has been committed to innovation from the beginning Its founding faculty embraced a forward-looking approach to legal education while retaining important aspects

of traditional legal education befitting a young school in a growing city.

Nearly from its inception, the College has provided extensive training in practical legal skills, offering students a firm foundation in lawyering before they become practicing attorneys Today, the College of Law has one of the strongest legal writing programs

in the country, provides myriad field placement opportunities, and offers a variety

of clinics that allow students to get hands-on experience while providing indigent members of the community with valuable legal assistance Each year, approximately

90 percent of students participate in clinics, externships, or pro bono activities.

In the five decades since its founding, the College of Law has grown in size and national prominence, assembling an acclaimed faculty in the core areas of legal study while continuing to offer innovative approaches to legal education The Center for Law, Science & Innovation is the nation’s first and largest academic center focused on the intersection of law and science, and offers the country’s only LLM in Biotechnology and Genomics The Center for Public Health Law and Policy and the Law and Sustainability Center offer specialized Certificates, and the Indian Legal Program, arguably the leading program on Indian law in the country, offers an LLM

in Tribal Policy, Law, and Government, the Certificate in Indian Law, and the Indian Legal Clinic The Lodestar Dispute Resolution Center offers training in conflict resolution, and The Sports Law and Business Program provides students critical legal and business training and hands-on field experiences The Center for Law and Global Affairs and the International Rule of Law and Security Program, located in Washington, D.C., support and inspire research, education, and practice regarding emerging forms of transnational governance In addition to these programs, the College of Law continues to provide opportunities for its students and graduates with innovative endeavors such as a nonprofit law firm, an employer outreach initiative, and a faculty and staff committed to student success.

The College of Law bridges the gap between theory and practice, and our faculty and students address many of the pressing legal and public policy challenges of our time
