So you'll get five full days practicing with that training audio.. So let's talk about how you're going to do that with each unit and then, you're going tostart with this unit, Unit Numb

Trang 2

Well in this course you're going to learn to speak with a clearer, moreunderstandable, North American accent Now I say North American because theCanadian and the American accents are basically the same; especially the standardaccents in each of those countries So I will teach you the North American accentbecause I'm from the United States and that's my accent At the end of this courseyou will have much clearer pronunciation You will be understood You will soundmore like an American You will have a much better accent

So lets talk about how you're going to do this This course takes about three and ahalf months Now I want you to go nice and slowly through the course and to learndeeply Effortless English is a deep learning system It means I want you to practiceand really master the skills Just thinking about and learning about pronunciation byreading or watching a video, it's not enough You have to practice it You have toimagine you're an athlete and you're training You have to train the muscles in yourthroat, in your mouth, and you have to even train your mind to be able to make thesounds correctly so that you have a nice American accent

Lets talk about the process; how you're going to do this Now this course has twentyunits

Trang 3

You're going to take five days for each unit So every unit you will do it for five days

in a row You're going to have two things in each unit There will be a video; a videolesson, and there will be a training audio The video lesson teaches you how to makethe important sounds, or teaches you some technique for improving yourpronunciation Now it's a video because I want you to look and see how I move mymouth Sometimes I'll show you my tongue even so you can see what I'm doing andlearn how to make the sounds correctly

Now in the training audio, that's where you will actually practice because justwatching me is not enough You have to learn to do it yourself and that requirespractice day after day after day You'll be practicing every single day So thattraining audio, you're going to repeat it several times a day Not just once Severaltimes a day And you're going to do that for five days, right? So for example, in unitone, you'll practice with the training audio on day one On day two you'll practicewith that same audio again On day three you'll practice with it again On day for and

on day five So you'll get five full days practicing with that training audio Trainingyourself to improve your pronunciation And then finally day six you start a newunit You start back to the beginning

Now each day you'll do something a little different You'll have a slightly differentfocus on each day for each unit For example, on day one you'll focus on listeningdeeply; focus on hearing the sounds of English correctly This is the first step Soyou'll be listening to that training audio and to the lesson video again and again andagain and again, but not just listening and ignoring it Not just listening anddistracted, but listening very carefully To say the sounds correctly you first musthear them correctly

On day two of each unit you will pause and imitate So you'll listen to one sentencefrom me in the training audio, and you'll pause, and then you'll say the same

Trang 4

sentence You'll try to copy my pronunciation Then you'll to the second sentence, the third sentence You'll do this pausing and copying, pausing and imitating, pausing and repeating again and again and again But not just repeating the words. That's not enough You have to copy my pronunciation So imitating; that's theimportant word Pause and imitate on day two of each unit

On day three of each unit you will read aloud and record yourself You have the textfor all of these audios and videos So you'll read them aloud in a nice strong voice, and you'll record yourself Then you'll compare your recording, your audio, to myrecording You'll listen carefully and you'll notice the differences Then you'll beable to hear your own mistakes with pronunciation That will help you improve a lot

Finally on days 4 and 5 for each unit you will use a technique called tracking Iexplain this technique in unit one, but I'll give you a brief description now This iswhere you listen to me, listen to the audio, and you speak with me at the same time,

no pausing You don't pause the audio, so you have to speak at the same speed as me.Now I'll tell you, it's not easy in the beginning You'll be listening and saying thesame thing You'll try to copy my pronunciation as you listen without pausing That's

a lot to do at the same time So don't worry if it's very difficult at first It probablywill be, but day by day, week by week, this tracking technique will become easierand easier and this is so powerful This will help you create an amazing, clearAmerican accent Your pronunciation will improve so much by using this trackingtechnique on days four and five of every unit

You will develop a clear and understandable American accent Just follow this fiveday process with each unit Be patient Let yourself improve gradually and slowly. That's how you do it

Trang 5

All right, it's time to get started Go to Unit 1 now Watch the lesson video and thenstart training with the training audio See you now in Unit 1!

Trang 7

Unit 1 - Pronunciation

Hello and welcome to the first unit In this video, I'm going to explain in more detail theEffortless English pronunciation method This is the method you will use every day, every week in every unit This is a training method

Okay, so, one of the key things about the Effortless English Pronunciation Course is thatit's a training course I'm not just going to teach you the sounds That's not enough Youhave to think of this like an athlete You know, like a football player, a soccer player as

we say in America They don't just study books, right Ah, a great soccer player does notjust read books about soccer to become great Now, what do they do? They go out on tothe field and they practice the skills They're actually using their body, practicing theskills to become good soccer players or great soccer players

Well, in fact, pronunciation in many ways is a physical skill It's, it's, it's almost like asport, right You have to teach your tongue to move in a certain way, and teach yourmouth muscles to move in different ways And the muscles in your throat have to learn tomove in a different way And you can't get that skill just by reading a book, and youcannot get that skill only by listening to me on the video You have to practice And that'swhy the training audios are so important And that's why it is I say this is a trainingcourse because it's daily practice It's a method of practice

So let's talk about how you're going to do that with each unit and then, you're going tostart with this unit, Unit Number 1's training audio Okay, as I mentioned in theintroduction video, this is a five day process So it's the five day process you will follow. What does that mean? It means every unit is five days So, this unit, Unit 1, you will doUnit 1 for five days And each day, you'll do something a little different with the sameaudio

This is a deep learning method It means you're practicing for mastery You're practicing

to get those skills so that your skills get better, not just to know It doesn't help if you just

Trang 8

know Okay, my tongue has to go up when I make this sound That's not enough becausewhen you're really speaking quickly, you're just gonna forget, and then you'll make thesame pronunciation mistakes No, you have to train, practice, making your tongue go tothe right position again, and again, and again, and again, and again Eventually, it willbecome a habit, it'd become automatic, but it requires practice And so that's why everyunit, five days So, you repeat the same training audio for five days

Let's just see how that looks For example, this one, Unit 1, on day 1, what do you do? Ialready mentioned it in the introduction video You listen carefully So listening is thekey In the beginning, you must hear the sounds first before you can say the soundscorrectly So day 1 is intensive listening It means you're going to listen to the trainingaudio maybe 4 or 5, 10, or more times on day 1 And you're not just gonna listen whileyou're distracted doing something else No, you're gonna listen very carefully, listening tothe sounds Imagine you're listening to music and you want to hear all of the little, smallsounds in English So it's very careful listening on day 1, repeating that training audioagain, and then again, and again And if you need to, repeat the video lesson as wellmany, many times so that you can really hear those sounds That's day 1

So day 1, you're finished, you've listened, listened, listened Day 2, you're gonna use thesame exact audio, the training audio And on day 2, you're going to pause and imitate, pause and imitate So, you've got your little, your phone or your iPod or whatever, andyou're gonna listen to the audio You'll play 1 sentence You'll hear me speak I'll say the

1 sentence, "Hi, this is AJ," then you pause After you pause, you will imitate myspeaking You will say what I just said and you'll copy it You'll try to sound exactly like

me So again, I might say, "Hi, this is AJ," pause, then you say, "Hi, this is AJ," trying tosound exactly like me Then you play again You play the second sentence, pause, youkeep doing this for the whole audio One sentence, listen, pause, then you say it Nextsentence, listen, pause, you say it, going through the whole thing Repeat this as manytimes as possible on day 2

Trang 9

Day 3, you will use the text On day 3, you will read aloud right, you have the text for thetraining audio for that unit You'll read it out loud with a nice, loud, strong voice Youcan go slowly if you need to, it's okay, but read it aloud and record it, record it You canget a free recording app for your phone, or your computer, or buy some little cheaprecorder, whatever you need But record yourself, reading it out loud in a loud, strongvoice And again, when you read aloud, remember how I sounded, right Try toremember and try to say it the way I would say it

After you record yourself reading, the fun part, compare your recording to my recording

Do they sound the same? Probably not exactly so you want to compare Where does youraccent sound different than mine? And just hearing it, just noticing the differences willhelp your brain adjust so that your pronunciation will gradually become more like mine. But it's really days 4 and 5 for each unit that you will do the best practice because youwill do something called tracking You will use a technique called tracking

Tracking means you will listen to me, and so you'll be playing the training audio listening

to my voice You will not pause No pausing You just let it play, play, play the wholething And here, it's a little difficult As you hear me speaking, you will also speak at thesame time Your goal, what you're trying to do is to listen and speak along with me atexactly the same time When I pause, you pause If I get louder, you get louder If I getquiet, you get quiet You're trying to copy me exactly, but with no pausing so you'rehaving to speak at the same speed as me

Now let me tell you what's going to happen The first time you try this, it will be difficult.Probably, you'll be listening to me ahhhh, and trying to speak with me at the same time, you, you probably will get confused and frustrated ahhhh, you might have to stop, rewind, and start again Don't get upset, don't get angry, that is normal Just rewind, becalm, relax, smile, and then do it again, play the audio As you hear me, try to speakalong with me at the same time Now of course, actually, you'll be just a little behind me,right? It's impossible for you to hear it and say it at exactly the same time, but try What

Trang 10

really happens is you’ll be hearing me speak and you'll be speaking the same thing, speaking along with me just a little bit after me And try to copy my accent, my emotion, everything exactly You'll do this on day 4 You'll probably need to repeat it again, andagain, and again on day 4

If you need to, it's fine to use the text as well when you're start doing this trackingtechnique You can read along That'll help you follow me more closely But eventually, maybe on day 5, you do it without the text So day 4, you'll do this tracking technique, listening and speaking at the same time, huh It's gonna be tough probably on day 4 Day4's over Day 5, same thing, you'll be tracking me again So you'll be hearing the audio, speaking along with me at exactly the same time or as close as you can As you do thistracking, you'll try to match my speed of course That's the first thing you'll need to doand probably the most difficult Once you can speak along at the same speed, then try tocopy my accent, copy my rhythm, copy everything so that you sound exactly like me Let me give you another quick tip about this tracking technique It actually is easier andworks better if you move your body while you do it That means instead of sitting down

in a chair trying to do the tracking technique, stand up and you can walk around the roomwhile you're doing it You could just walk in a circle as you're doing it But just movingyour body and kinda wake you up, it'll give you more energy, it'll help you focus more, and this will actually be more effective than sitting down 'Cause you know what happenswhen you sit down, after a few minutes, you start to get kinda tired and sleepy You can

do this outdoors I've done this outdoors, the same tracking technique with Spanish I'vedone it outdoors like hiking out in the woods, hiking in the forest, nobody around(giggles), and I'll, will be listening to some Spanish and I'll try to speak along with it atthe same time

Another quick tip about tracking, use a strong, loud voice Train yourself to speakingwith a strong loud voice Because otherwise, you'll, you, you get a little nervous and then, you'll teach yourself to speak with a shy, weak voice And you don't want that habit I, I

Trang 11

understand this Again, I've had that same problem with Spanish, this terrible habit of, of,

my voice getting very weak and shy whenever I wanna speak Spanish So, don't do that.Use a nice, loud, strong voice every time you do this tracking technique Very, veryimportant

So let's get started It's time for you to start Now, this is just the beginning unit, unit 1

So what I want you to do, I have a, a nice, long training audio for you in unit 1 And I justwant you to practice each of these techniques Just follow the five day process with unit

1 Do your best to copy my pronunciation Do your best to follow each of these steps. You'll probably make a lot of mistakes Don't worry You're just getting started You'rejust getting comfortable

In Unit 2, we'll focus on some specific areas of English pronunciation But, in training forUnit 1, just practice this process these five days All right, it's time Get that trainingaudio And of course, day 1, you're just gonna listen very carefully and then, follow day

2, day 3, day 4, and 5

Do exactly what I say every single day for every unit

See you in the training audio!

Unit 2 – Rhythm

Hello and welcome to the Unit 2 lesson In this lesson we're going to talk about two very, very, very important parts of pronunciation Perhaps the most important part of Englishpronunciation, in fact

Now, a lot of people who are English learners have problems with English pronunciationand especially with being understood, especially being understood by native speakers;Americans, Canadians, British people, etc And I know that a lot of learners worry aboutspecific sounds Some people it's the "R" and the "L" sound For some people it's the "Th"sound For some people it's different vowel sounds, but what most learners don't realize isthat the biggest problem of all, the reason that people don't understand you, it's usuallynot some small, specific sound

It's actually something much bigger, and that is rhythm Rhythm Because every language

is like music It has its own music, right? Japanese has a certain rhythm; a certain music.Spanish has a certain music or rhythm and so does English Probably the biggest problem

in pronunciation for most learners is that their rhythm is completely wrong When youspeak in a strange rhythm native speakers struggle to understand you They have adifficultly understanding you

So for example, Japanese can be kind of, "De de de de duh De de de de duh Er, de, duh."That's what it sounds like to me So if you speak English like that, with this kind of, "de

de, duh,” rhythm it sounds very strange, especially for American, Canadian, it's hard fortheir brains to understand it Much harder So getting the rhythm, the music, of Englishcorrect it's a huge improvement It will help you be understood much, much better Your accent will sound so much better just by improving your rhythm And of course, thespeed of speaking is part of rhythm because sometimes in English we say certain phrasesmore slowly We might stretch them out, and others we might say quite quickly and push

Trang 16

them together It's part of the rhythm also Speed and rhythm That's what you're going topractice and that's what you're going to train in this unit

So, how are we going to do that? When you think of rhythm the first thing I want you tofocus on are the pauses; the natural pauses of English See, we do not speak, in anylanguage and certainly not English, we do not speak the language word by word, pronouncing each word individually and equally That sounds strange That's a verystrange rhythm

We speak in phrases, meaning little groups of words Means some words naturally gotogether and connect, and other words naturally go together and connect, and then we putpauses in between, bigger pauses between the phrases So you have to listen for thepauses That's the main thing about rhythm; the pauses; pausing in the right place.Because if you pause in the wrong place, like I just did, it sounds very strange and it'svery difficult to understand When you pause in a correct place it sounds natural Peoplewill think, "Wow, you're a great English speaker Did you live in America?" And it's justbecause the rhythm sounds correct You're pausing in the natural places; the correctplaces Very, very, very important

So here's what we're going to do in this unit in the training You're going to follow thesame five day process again You remember that? You know, day 1 you're going to listencarefully But this time, in this unit, in this training audio you're going to focusspecifically on rhythm So as you listen on day 1, listen especially for the pauses Noticewhere I pause Notice how long the pauses are Some pauses are short, and some are verylong So you want to listen, listen carefully, focusing on rhythm, focusing on the pauses

on day number one

On day number 2 you'll keep on going with the Effortless English process, but again foreach day, for each part of the process, for the pausing and imitating, reading aloud, tracking, for this unit, Unit 2, focus specifically on pauses and rhythm; pauses and

Trang 17

rhythm Don't worry about any problem sounds "R" and "L" and "Th" and all that Don'tworry about that in this unit Rhythm is what I want you focusing on

It's almost like drumming too, right? It's like a song Every song has a rhythm, right?

"Duh dunna dun duh Duh dunna dun duh." You can almost clap with it That's rhythm. That's what I want you to focus on in this unit So you're going to follow the same fiveday process in the audio and try to match your English speaking rhythm to mine so youstart developing the music of American English

I will see you in the training audio Good luck!

Trang 18

Unit 2 – Practice Session

Welcome to the training audio Remember, the Effortless English Pronunciation five dayprocess On day 1, we listen carefully five times or more On day 2, we pause after everysentence and copy the pronunciation exactly, speaking loudly, five times or more Onday 3, we read the training text aloud and record ourselves We compare our recording

to AJ's We do this five times or more On days 4 and 5 we track the training audio Welisten and speak at the same time We copy AJ's pronunciation exactly

Let's begin

I am a powerful English speaker Every day my pronunciation is improving Every day, I

am closer to a perfect American accent In fact, I love to exaggerate my Americanaccent I make my American accent super strong Improving my accent is like a game Ipretend that I am an actor who is playing an American character As I copy AJ's rhythm,

I use a loud, strong voice, and I even use his gestures and facial expressions I amexcited about my improvement because I get more respect when people hear myfantastically clear American accent I'm having a lot of fun improving my pronunciationnow

Now again at a medium speed

Trang 20

Unit 3 – Pitch and Volume

Hello and welcome to Unit 3 You want to have a perfect accent; a perfect NorthAmerican accent Well, you're doing the right thing You're training You get that perfectaccent through training; the daily training, using these training audios, and following thefive day process, focusing on specific things Now in the last unit you focused on rhythm, right? That's a very important part of the music of English We're going to talk about twoother parts of the music of English in this unit; pitch and volume Pitch and volume. What is pitch? What is volume? Pitch is really the tone

That means if you think of music, right, we have tones that go higher and tones that go golower So it's the highness or the lowness Now in music they have musical notes Youknow A, B, C and they have scales You know, "Duh, duh, duh, duh, duh, duh, duh, duh, duh, duh, duh." In music you have that Well guess what? In language also, if you listencarefully to English or any langue, you will hear that the speakers will sometimes go upand sometimes they go down Now every speaker is a little different

Some people have higher voices Some people have lower voices, but the changes inpitch, the rise and the drop, can be important In some languages these changes in tone orpitch are super important

Languages like different Chinese languages, Thai, where the pitch can actually changethe meaning In English it's less important but you still need to hear it You still need toget your pitch and tone correct You need to go up when you're supposed to go up andand you need to drop when you're supposed to drop

Now luckily in English it's actually quite simple For questions we go up at the end, right? So you say, "How are you?" Not, "How are you?" Because that sounds like a

Trang 21

command For a command we do the opposite; we drop We say, "Go to the store now."

Uh It goes down at the end to make it sound strong and commanding If we soundunsure, we're not quite sure, then we usually go up because it sounds more like aquestion, right? "Uh, should I go to the store today? I don't know maybe I'll go to thestore today." Right? Up, up, up But if we want to emphasize something, or stress it, we

go down "Go to the store." Mm Down

Now I'll be doing it very strongly in the training audios Sometimes it's not such a strongthing It's very small, so you have to listen carefully But still, pitch is important The riseand the fall of English Very important

Volume is another one Volume just means loudness; loudness So again in speakingsometimes we'll say certain words or phrases more loudly Usually because we want tostress those words We want to emphasize those words because they're a little moreimportant So and we can even change the feeling of a sentence depending on whichword we say the loudest So for example we can say, "I went to the store." I'memphasizing "I" It means I did it Not someone else; me Right, if I say that "I" the mostloudly "I went to the store." But you could also say, "I WENT to the store." Thatchanges the feeling of the meaning a little bit Now it seems like the most important thing

is that I already went because I made went loudest word But I could also say, "I went tothe STORE." It's the same sentence, but by saying the word "store" very loudly I'memphasizing it and that gives the feeling that that's the most important piece ofinformation "I went to the STORE I didn't go to the bank I went to the STORE."

So, this week I want you to focus This unit I want you to focus on the loudness and onthe pitch So you're going to be listening for when I go up and when I go down and you'llalso be listening for which words I say a little more loudly and also the opposite Are

Trang 22

there some words that I say a little more quietly? That's your focus in this unit As youpractice with the training audio, for again, five days following the same five day process

Listen for the music of English this lesson So you're going to still be practicing rhythm

of course Don't forget last unit's lesson So this week as you This unit as you gothrough the training audios still practice the rhythm Make sure your pauses are correct, but you're also going to be listening and practicing pitch and volume

All right, it's time to stop listening to me in this video and go to the training audio Timefor you to start practicing Follow that same five day process Get that correct music ofEnglish It will improve your pronunciation so much This will make a huge difference; abig, big improvement You already have rhythm, now you're adding pitch and volume See you in the training audio

Trang 23

Unit 3 – Practice

Unit 4 – Mashups (Phrase Reductions)

Hello, and welcome to Unit number 4 For ten days or more, you have been practicing themusic of English, the rhythm, the pitch, and the volume Now let's talk about another veryimportant part of speaking English well Having that great natural accent Now there's aproblem In school you did not learn real English, unfortunately I know, because I used

to teach in schools, and I know how they teach you to speak, and it's not natural, it's notreal English See in most programs in schools and in textbooks, they teach you to speakword by word To carefully pronounce every word, which might make you sound like aBritish actor, (laughs) but it's not natural, it sounds quite strange

The truth is, in natural real conversations, we often combine words, we push two words,

or sometimes even three words together, and we say them like one word I call thesemash-ups

To mash it press something together, so that's my name, I call them mash-ups Thetechnical name is phrase reductions, but let's just call them mash-ups, it's more fun, itsounds more natural

Let me give you an example If you pronounce word by word you would say, what do youwant to do? What do you want to do? But almost no American will actually say that. What will they actually say if they're speaking naturally and quickly? They'll say, whatdya wanna do? Whatdya wanna do?

And this confuses (laughs) a lot of English learners because they learned, what do youwant to do? And when they hear the real phrase, the real pronunciation that most peopleuse, they don't understand what people are saying, it sounds weird, whatdya wanna do? Whatdya is a mash-up, or a phrase reduction It's, it's a few words pushed together

Whatdya means, what do you, what do you But when we speak fast, we push them alltogether, we say, whatdya And want to, if we say it fast we say, wanna

Trang 26

So whatdya wanna, what do you want to

There are a lot of these in English, and I'm going to just right now, I'm go-, I've got a listright here on a piece of paper, and I'm just gonna teach you a lot of the most commonones I'm just gonna go down the list, and I'll teach you the mash-up, and then I'll tell youwhat it means, what the actual individual words are And then in the training audio, you'll

be practicing these again, and again, again for five days

Let's start with a very common one, gonna, gonna

Gonna means going to, right? I'm going to go to the store, we say, I'm gonna go to thestore Gonna means going to

Wanna, wanna, wanna means want to

Wanna, want to

Havta, havta, I havta do it Means I have to, have to

Push them together, havta

Similar is hasta, he hasta study

He has to study, hasta, hasta

Gotta, gotta means got to, or must, right?

Oh, I gotta eat, I'm so hungry It means I must eat, I got to eat

This is kinda casual, right, it's not perfect grammar, but it's super common Gotta means Imust or I've got

to

Oughta, oughta means ought to, oughta

I oughta study more, I ought to, oughta, ougtha

Trang 27

Didja, didja, didja, has a little bit of a J sound in there

Ja, didja, means did you, didja, did you

Outta, outta, means out of, right? We are outta money, we are out of money, means wedon't have any money anymore, it's all gone

Outta, outta

Wouldja, wouldja, would you, wouldja like to go to a restaurant?

Would you, wouldja, wouldja

Woulde, woulde means would he

Would he push them together, woulde

Um, wontcha, wontcha means won't you Won't you? Won't you do it?

Wontcha do it? Has a little bit of a che, che, that CH sound, wontcha, wontcha, won't you.Didntcha, didntcha, didn't you, didntcha

Put it together, didn't you, didntcha, didntcha

Isse, isse, is he, isse tired? Is he tired? Isse, isse

Ah, whatdya, I already said that right, whatdya, what do you, whatdya, whatdya, what doyou

Stopit This is a favorite one for kids, this is one of the first ones little children learn Stopit, stopit, stopit, stopit, stopit, stop it, means stop doing it, right?

So if you, someone's doing something you don't like it, say stopit, stopit, stopit, put themtogether, stopit

Trang 28

Ah, needit, I need it

I needit, needit, needit (laughs)

Ah, whates, whates, what does, what does

What does that mean? Whates that mean? Whates, whates, again, we're pushing wordstogether, that's all we're doing

Ya, ya is you Sometimes instead of saying you, you know, you are great, or what do youwant, we'd say, what do ya want?

What do ya want? What do ya want? What do ya want? Instead of you

Areya, areya, are you, are you

Areya tired? Are you tired? Areya happy? Are you happy? Areya

And one more, needta, needta, need to, needta

I needta eat I need to eat, needta

Okay, that's a lot (laughs) That's a long list, you know, listen to them, review the text ofthis list, just so you remember them But we're, don't worry, because we're going topractice the common ones in the training audio You'll be following the same five dayprocess with this lessons training audio So after five days, you will know all of these Sodon't worry, follow the five day process, use the training audio as I taught you, and youwill learn all of these common English mash-ups

See you in the training audio Bye for now

Unit 5 - Vibration

Okay, hello, I'm AJ, welcome to Unit 5 Now we have some specific sounds coming soon

in the course I know what you're waiting for, I know what you want You want thosespecific sounds like R and L and TH, they're coming soon But you have to get these bigparts of English first You have to practice the rhythm, the music of English first Masterthat, improve that, and your pronunciation will fairly quickly sound much better Thenwe'll focus on all those little small sounds So they're coming soon, don't worry, but this, this unit, we're still going to do something very big And this unit is focused on vibration

So vibration is just the shaking, right, it's something that, that moves back and forth This

is a very, very important part of, of singing and of pronunciation You have to get thevibration correct, to sound like a native speaker To sound like you've got really goodaccent, like you're pronunciation is good What am I talking about? Wha-, what, what isvibration? How do we use it when we speak English? Well there are three main areas ofyour body where sound will vibrate, right? There's your chest, right, kind of in your lungs, your chest, it's down low If you make some sounds of ehhh, the vibration happens moststrongly down in your chest You can even put your hands here, you can feel the soundsmoving and vibrating here

The second area that sounds will vibrate in when we speak, the throat, right, right in thethroat here And again, you can put your fingers there and speak, and you'll feel thevibration Your vocal chords, your throat, vibrating, s- And then finally the third area isthe nose, it's this whole area here, right? Up in the nose, and if you speak with kind of anose accent, a nasal accent, then the vibration up here will be stronger So why is thisimportant? Well for two reasons

Reason number one, some sounds in English will vibrate in a specific area Now allsounds will vibrate everywhere, okay? So there's always going to be some vibration inyour chest, there'll always be some in your throat, and there'll always, or almost always,

Trang 32

be some in your nose But what's important is where is the strongest vibration And forsome sounds, it's stronger in one area For example, the NG sound, like ING

Like the end of the word running, running, running, that NG is, is kind of a nose vibrationsound that ING, ING, you just say that, ING

Put your fingers here on the nose, ING At the end of that sound, you should feel somevibration in your nose, ING, ING, ING

I feel that right now, ING, ING, ING

It's not ING, it's not down in the chest, it's up in the nose, ING, ING, ING So to makethat sound correctly, you need to get that nose vibration

Now another reason the vibration's important, is for pitch Remember we talked about, acouple of units ago, that as we go, go up sometimes in English, and we go downsometimes in English Generally in English, if you speak with a lower voice, and you godown, you sound stronger It sounds like you're more confident, it sounds like you'remore commanding And when you go up, you sound less sure, you sound unsure likeyou are questioning, it sounds a little bit weaker If you're a singer, you probably alreadyknow that as you go up and down, the vibration in your body changes Generally as you

go up, the vibrations will become more strong up in your head and nose area Whenyou're speaking in kind of a middle tone like I am now, you'll feel the strongest vibration

in your throat And when you really get your voice down low, the vibration will dropdown more into your chest

So by training for vibration, you will become better at the music of English So that's why

in this unit, you're going to focus on vibration When you can master the vibration, whenyou can make the vibration happen where you want it, the chest, throat or nose, you'll beready to focus on those difficult individual sounds So, in some ways this is going to feel

a little like singing, you're gonna feel the vibration go up into your nose and your head. And then you can drop it down more into your throat, and then you can drop it down into

Trang 33

your chest And I recommend, when you practice with the training audio in this unit, actually use your fingers Put them on your throat, put them on your nose, put yourfingers here on your chest, the upper chest, and feel the vibrations, and feel how theychange

This will be a fun unit, and it will be a very training unit, just relax and enjoy, becausethose specific sounds are coming soon

See you in the audio training

Trang 34

Unit 5 – Practice Session

Welcome to the training audio, remember to follow the five day method Let's begin First I am practicing head voice My pitch is very high I notice the vibration, the feelingshappening in my head, mostly Next, I move the vibration to my nose I feel the vibrations

in my nose and, of course, this sounds a little strange For throat vibration, I drop mypitch to the middle level I relax my throat and let it vibrate I put my finger on my throat

to feel the vibrations I feel the vibrations most strongly in my neck and throat Finally, Idrop my pitch even more I speak with a low voice as I push the vibration down, down, down into my chest I still feel some vibration in my throat but now my chest is alsovibrating My voice sounds deep and strong when I use chest vibration As I practice, Ieasily move sound vibrations up and down my body I am now ready to master thespecific sounds of English

Now at a medium speed

First I am practicing head voice My pitch is very high I notice the vibration, the feelingshappening in my head, mostly Next, I move the vibration to my nose I feel the vibrations

Trang 36

One more word about these different lessons for the sounds In some of these units, thesounds will be very difficult for you and you might get frustrated It might feel like you'renot improving That's all normal Just relax and keep following the five day EffortlessEnglish pronunciation process It's designed to be successful, it's designed for a reason So

if on the first day and the second day and the third day it feels difficult, don't worry, justrelax Okay? The point is not to be perfect, nobody's perfect Everybody makes mistakes.Just focus on improving a little bit, a little bit each day

Point number two Some of the units will be very, very easy for you because yourlanguage will already have the sound So you'll think, oh, this is easy I already have TH

in my language or I already have R and L in my language so this is so simple Noproblem Still focus and do your best for five days on that unit If the sounds are easyfor you, then instead focus again on getting the rhythm, the music, the pitch correct You need to continually practice that rhythm so that you get the correct rhythm ofAmerican English So anytime you have an easy unit, with easy sounds, don't just becomelazy, still practice all of those five things, recording yourself, pausing and imitating, listening carefully, tracking Do all of those things, so you can improve your speakingspeed and so that your rhythm and music will continue to get better and better and better

Trang 37

(claps) Time for our sound in this unit, the TH sound

Now I mentioned there are actually two versions of it Lets learn the soft TH, we'll call itthe soft TH And it sounds like this, th, th, th

Now how do you make that sound? Many people have problems with this sound so let meshow you exactly how to do it Now the first thing that happens when you make the THsound is your tongue, ah, will actually come out you're pushing it out between yourteeth So, put your teeth like this and there's a small space between your teeth And thenpush your tongue between

Now an important note as you learn these specific sounds When you're practicing, dothem very strongly Now of course when I say the TH sound, I don't do everything really, really big But I've been saying this sound my whole life, so it's easy for me But for you,you need to practice so I want you to do it very strongly Exaggerate these sounds, makethem sound super, super, super strong If I tell you to push your tongue out then push itout a lot Okay? When you improve later, everything can become a little smaller but whenyou're first learning, make everything big and exaggerated

So tongue comes out and then you're going to actually, not really bite (laughs) but pressyour teeth against your tongue Right? So your, your tongue is touching both teeth and it'sbetween them, like this

Now another key part about this, to make it sound correct, especially in a word, is you tostretch this sound Because it's so soft, you need to make it a little bit longer Right? If

Trang 38

you do it really fast, nobody will hear it If you go, th, th, people won't hear the sound atall So you actually have to make it a little, a little slow, a little long Th, stretch it out Lets do some words that have the soft TH I'll say them and then you practice with me,and we're going to be very, very strong with our TH sound, okay? Think Think

Now see here I'm stretching the TH, I'm making that TH very slow I want you to do thatalso, it's important Blow air

Think Think

Thing, what is that thing? Thing

Three Three Three

Thirty Thirty Thirty

Thanks Thanks Thanks

Bath It's at the end of the word now Bath Again make the TH very long, make it superlong We're practicing Bath Bath

Truth Truth Truth

Math Math Last one

Tooth Tooth Tooth

Let's do one more Mouth Mouth Mouth

Th, th, th That's the soft TH! Congratulations (claps)

The second TH, we could call it the hard TH, we could call it the vibrating TH It's astronger sound It's a little bit louder sound and stronger, because there's a vibration.Otherwise it's the same, so you do everything the same with your tongue and your teeth.Right?

Trang 39

So, teeth again, tongue sticks out You're going to blow air just the same way Th So how

do we make it vibrate? Well now you need to vibrate your throat and your tongue.Remember the last unit when I talked about vibration? It's very important for somesounds, this is one of those sounds You need to get the vibration very strong in yourthroat and your tongue even can vibrate Meaning it's going to shake very quickly

And it will sounds like this, th Th It's the same sound, the only difference is now you'revibrating Your tongue doing this and your throat, it's also vibrating Th Th Th Th.Same sound, same position Vibrate Th, th, th

Let's do some words with the vibrating TH

That That Make it really long again, stretch it out, because we're practicing That That They They They

The The or thee Same word Thee or the

This This

That That That

Now in the middle Mother Mother

Okay? I'm doing it very strong, I'm making IT very slow, so you can hear it and practice

it Mother It's not muther, right? That's the soft one You have to get the vibration Mother

Make the vibration super strong, exaggerate it as you practice so you can really get thedifference

Mother Together Together Together Together Breathe

The end of the word Breathing, right? (breathes) Breathe

Trang 40

This is the way that its, uh, telling you to do it It's like a verb Breathe Breathe.Breathe It's vibrating Now this is an important word for the TH because there's anotherword, breath Breath is a noun, breath is the air that comes in and out Breath That's thesoft TH Breath

But breathe, with the vibration, that's the verb That's the action of breathing So itchanges the meaning if it's soft or hard Let's practice the TH, the soft one first

Breath Breath Breath (breathes)

Take one breath Breath Now the

verb

Breathe Breathe Breathe Vibration

Let's practice one more variation and this is where we add an R sound, because this canalso be very difficult for some people So TH and then you add an R So the TH soundsexactly the same, it might be soft, it might be vibrating But then for the R sound, I'mgoing to give you a little tip

Make the R sound very loud Right? When you have THR, for example, the word throw.Throw Make the R very strong Some people make the R soft and they say thow, thow, thow It sounds It doesn't sound right So you got to get that R sound nice and strong. It's throw Throw

Here I'm making that R very hard Now if R is difficult for you, don't worry, relax. There's a, there's a whole unit to teach you how to pronounce R correctly So just playwith it in this unit This is really focused on TH, so I'm just adding the R for a little extrapractice

Let's do a few words Throw Throw

The other thing you can do with that THR, is at the end, with the R, you can push yourlips out a little bit
