Descriptions of Activities and Extension Ideas

Below is a brief description of each word activity as welll as ideas for extending the concepts and skills presented in Word Play Most of the activities in this book can be easily extended by integrating a classroom spelling list, new vocabulary is, student names, or key terms from any curricular unit

Mystery Word (pages 9-14)

In this missing-letters activity, students write missing letters in the circles using the ilustrations for letter clues When completed, a mystery word will be made by writing the letters in the circles in order from top fo bottom,

Extension Idea: Using the reproducible on page 119, have students use stickers, clip art, pictures from magazines, or simple drawings to design their own “Mystery Word" Pages Allow students to share the completed pages with classmates or family members

Secret Code (pages 15-22)

In this beginning-sounds activity, students must “break the code" fo spell a mystery word Using the illustration cives, students write each word's initial letter Then, students

‘draw lines to match mystery words to comesponding illustrations,

Extension Idea: To extend this activity, have students develop original secret codes Using stamps, stickers, or simple drawings Then, let students give the secret messages
