At its fifty-sixth session (24-28 October 1988), the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) agreed to the development of an index of valid technical guidelines and recommendations adopted by the Organization and invited all sub-committees to review IMO resolutions and circulars

to identify those documents containing guidelines and tions relating to maritime safety which were currently valid and useful to Administrations, industry or seafarers and to prepare an index of items within the field of their competence.

recommenda-The MSC also considered that other committees of the Organization should be invited to take similar action with respect to guidelines and recommendations within their field of responsibility, in order that a comprehensive index covering all guidelines and recommendations adopted by the Organization could eventually be prepared.

The present Comprehensive Index of Valid Technical Guidelines and Recommendations brings the previous edition (1992) up to date to May

1998 The breakdown and numbering of subject headings follows, as much as possible, the same breakdown and numbering used in the full index of IMO Resolutions, with the exception of a few additional headings that have been included to reflect new topics that are now being dealt with by IMO.

Notes

1 The following new subject headings have been added:

4.016 Authorization of recognized organizations

acting on behalf of maritime administrations

4.071 Hydrofoils and air-cushion vehicles

Trang 4

existing subject heading:

4.133 Grain cargoes

absorbed by

4.132 Solid bulk cargoes.

4 Each resolution is normally classified under only one subject

heading When a resolution relates to more than one subject the choice has generally been made of the most significant heading under which to classify it When, however this was not convenient the resolution was included in the relevant main subject headings covered by it.
